M. A FRIEND OF EDUCATION. MI Fbr the .Leigt non Advertiser. TEXT EOOKS, FOR SCHOOLS. MR. EDITOR:—I. , caII your attention to this sub--: jeet, not that .I wish to adVdente the merits of any particular books-or series, of books, but merely te take a general glatq'e at it. Perhaps there , is no ; theme upon which a greater variety of peculiar ' opinions is held; and it is interesting to'_just .think, what a vast amount of puffing and , ex travagant recommending are constantly solicited, to elucidate and make public, the said opinions. Seine tsmehers regard text books as of little erne importance, while others rely upon them so de pendently that they could hardly ;teach a child the letter A, without a primer; anannoshos o l us regard them. as mere helps or tiids; as 'necessary. , tools in the school-room. But when we come down from generalities to consult teachers upon the important matter of selecting 'books for our schools, then their various opinions:, preferences, and predilections are manifested rd &f'interesting, if not an amusing manner. .Poy precisely the same children 2 different teachers would reemn- Mend entirely different books. - Mr. A. wants Ad - are's Arithmetic in his school, bet:guise he studied it in his school-boy days i Mr. It fresh from • some Aeademy or Normal School, in which Wells' Grammer is used, of course, thinks it,jost, the wor • • ~k . Mr the little boys and girl hrtder his l charg,e ; and Mr, C. who has been hexing alsont eierywhere, and got IL little smattering of Latin-rand Greek, is . . , . . sure to prefer the work of some :distinguished Professor who is the author Of a Series' of books in the dead languages, and has - made an -English Grammer to correspond with thnsarne. Now, in all this, a vitally important matter, - the great point, in filet, is overlooked. viz ; the adaptation of the book to the school. What-land, of text books do the scholars require?.thlitild be 'the question. A particular Grammar- or , Arithmetie may be a good work fur classcis'in an ,il'etietny, a college, or seminary, yet it does not Mow that it is at ell adapted to boys and girls of 8,.10,. 12 or 14 years, in our Common Schools. -Per papas of these ages a text-book shonld heron, sensible simplicity at its beginning, and - gradithe by slow and natural stages, to things more diffieult. . And if the right work is adopted, bee book will be enough in some branches; especially in •Grammar or Arithmetic. The .boy that has ivotited thor oughly, rationally through one good Arithmetic; will of course be master of 'all'Other text-hooks in lhat science, fur the same general rules are laid down, and the some great principals irivolved, in eaelt. And so with language. , If a-girl'ean an- Mize any sentence in . -4iirkliani, - Stn‘th, Murray or Brown, and has therilughly learned and can ,prac tically use and apply the rules and notes laid clown by either of 'said authors,- she will find nothing dark or incoteprehensible in any of our • other numerous works on the subject. There is, therefore, no need of going. to the-expense and running into the confirsion; of a series of books in these branches. Let'ontagood work be adopt,- ed, and stuck to, untqltis mastered. And r a - sure you, in 'a inejtalty,of eases, school life will not ho too long for this 'iTt is a great mistake to suppose the fait4l.4. in ,the text-book, because a boy does not : learnwell. More likely, lie flues 4 , not use it in a..proper manner. To frequently change the text-hooks in a school, is the worst of i policy. Nothing is better calculated to produce ; confusion. But time will not let me sap what I should likete.on this point. To sum up, in adopt- i ing- text-booki,' let the wants of our schools be j chiefly regarded; selectsthose works which are I he'st adapted to 'the pupils who are to use them; ' having thus .modettjudicious and eulightened se- 1 leetion, turn tylenc ear to those publishers and .1 teachers who are-ever so eager for eltairge; and fi.- I 1 tinily remember that:ilia:fact of an author's being- I I-a Professor in College - is no special roan - mend:v."
