THE REPUBLICAN. ' - CLBAKF1ELD, PA. WEfWHSDAT MORNINO, DEC. ln.mi. Fish Culture In the United States. In miriunnco of ft cull by Profomor Haird, United States Commissioner of tilth una f 18I101 los, mooting was bold in New York on the 15Ut ull , At whicli wora proaont many mombors of the various Smto Comuiissioner of tbo . Northorn and Now Lnjjlund States, and aevorul members of the American FiU Culiarisl'i Association und others. R, D. Jloosevolt was ehosen Chair man and Mr. Hudson, Socrelary. On taking the chair, Mr. Roosevelt said tbnl fish oulturo would in time become ono of tho most important industries in this country, ana the speedy con summation Ot this result dopondod somewhat upon their efforts and the fenerul intelligence in regard to it. t was only a few years since fish cul ture was first known in this country. The success of tbo experiments made iioro, originating in Connecticut, had led to a development that already has caused the appointment of fishory commissioners in most of the North ern Slate), and oven in California. The subsequent results were of so en couraging a character that even the Southern and Western States have expressed thoir desire to uuite in this movement. Professor Bnird then gave an ao count of his own operations in the administration of tho trust committed to him, namely, the PROPAGATION OF VSEEL'l FOOD FISHES in tho waters of the United States, lie referred in tho commencement of his sUtomont to the origin of the movemont, wben tho American Fish Culturisl's Association at its Albany meeting in Fobruary, 1872, appointed Mr. Goorgo S. Pago as the chuirman of a cominittco to urgo upon Congress tho grunting of an appropriation for this work. This approbriation, which wns finally made to tho amount of $15,000, was not available until the 1st of July, when it was almost loo late to do anything in securing young shad for distribution. But through the efforts of Mr. Sotb Green and Mr. William Clift, seconded by the Fish Commissions of Mew York and Con necticut, a beginning was mado. Mr. Croon saocecuod in planting several thousand young shad in tho Allogbany at Salamanca, and a lurge number in the Mississippi, above St Pnul. Mr. Clift tduccd about 400,000 also in the Allogbany titSitlnmanca.us many more in the rt lute niver at inaiannpoiis And tho balunoe ot his slock, amount ing to several thoisand, in tho Platte Klvcr, ncarDonvor, Col. STOCKING RIVERS WITH SHAD. Professor Buird referred to tho fact that sbnd had boon Ukun fur several rears past in the Ouachita, near Hot Springs, Arkansas, and in tho Ala bama River, and more recently in tho Escambia and Cboctawhatcbec. This fact gavo good ground to supposo that the Mississippi or its tributaries, as well as many of the rivers erap'tying into the Gulf of Mexico, oro cnpablo of being stocked to great extent with shad. Ho proposed, should Con- ..gross favor tho plan, to continue the experiment of placing shad in as many suitable Southorn and Western rivers us possiblo during tho coming year, wbon it is hoped he may have means of entering tho field at a much curlier season than it was possiblo to do this year. Ho then explained the meas ures be bad taken' to procure salmon . eggs for nocking American waters. - He bad, in rccurdance with suggos tions of the Commissioners of sevural States, at a meeting bold in Boston on the 13th of June, made an arrange ment with Mr. Atkins, of Bucknport, Mo., to procure for tho United Stales a largp Dumber of eggs from tbo sal mon of the Penobscot Itivor. This gentleman by tho aid affordod him by tbo United States Commissioners bad been cnublod greatly to cxtond the 'operations originally undertaken in ids interests of tho New Kneland , States, and now has about COO largo, bcaltby saluion in an enclosuro staked off in the centre of a pond of 150 acros. From thoso fish tho eggs are to bo'taken at Iho proper lime, and, im precnated. the salmon themsolres then to be attain sot free. From Ibis aoiirco be hopod to roceivo sovoral millions of ccir. Wishing to increase tho certainty of securing n supply of ' eggs, ho entered into correspondence ' with tho ofllcors of . TUB DEUT8CUK flBIiKRM VEREIN " In Germany, and through their influ ' onoo the Gorman Government had . kindly offored to present to the United States a quarter of a million of eggs of salmon from tho ltliine, on tho sole condition that the United States should employ an expert to accompany tho ' eggs to tho plnco of shipment. This .condition was gladly accoplod, and subsequently a contract was mado ' with Mr. Schuster, of Freiburg, for a quarter of a million moro eggs of the same rnricly of salmon. These it is expected will bo cored for and trans ported to tho coast by Mr. Hudolph , Honol, on experienced fish culturist, and it .is even hoped lLat he insy ac company tho vnltiublo cargo (which will weiifb 5.000 miinJrJ, lo Amorica. , In aoeordunco with tho suggestion of tho meeting at Boston it was decided - lo try to sccuro on additional supply of rr2 from California, and Mr. Liv ingston Stono wns despatched for that object early in August, lie establish ed himself on tho Mount Cloud Hiver, -a tributary of tho Sacrnmonto, but - contrary to the expectation derived from tho most trustworthy informa tion, found be wns a little too luto.the spawning season having already pass ed. A ruport by Mr. Stono of his work was rend, in which he expresses ' tho opinion that, inasmuch as ho has nlrendy creeled a hntchiiiir house, nnd solved many of tho problems which wero nocussary to be docidod, tho prospect for securing many millions ." of eggs next year is oxcollent, provid ed tho groahd bo occupied as early as tho 20ih of July. Some 10,000 or 15,. 0OO eggs were obtained this season, ' iind may be oxpectod buforo long. Great interest was manifested in ' lbt report of Professor Balrd, and more than two hours wero spent in tho discussion of a variety of qneslions " as to the best kinds of fish to be in troduced; tho localities where the lthino.
