Our School Affairs. Wo have tbo
largest Board of Directors in the H ale, aud about
the poorest school houses. Tbose two fsots all
seem to agree upon. But not so with reference to
a "new departure" or a step forward by way of
improvement. The Board has had session after
session, but nothing definite, as to location, money
or the number aud style of building oould bo
agreed upon, until some tiino last week, Judge
Leonard sent in a proposition, which seems to
have rendered the Board of Directors quite sensi
ble, and they are now moving forward to some
thing practical. We understand that Judge Leo
nard's proposition was in writing, and is about
this: lie offers to coovey to tho School Board fire
lots of ground on Market street, between Fifth
street and the ridge road, and loan them $10,000
for ten years at 6 per eeut.t If the Directors will
proceed at onoe and erect a fint class school build
ing thereon.
We nnderstand that tho proposition was a
oepLcd and a committee appointed lo inform the
Judge of the acceptance of his proposition, who
on behalf of their colleagues and the citizens gen
erally, retained thanks to him fur his liberality.
The location indicated ia a di sirahle one from
the fact that it Is surrounded on three sides by
streets, and cau never be ennroafhed upon by other
buildings, nor embellished with stables and other
outhouses. Decides, mom ground can bo obtain
ed, and it will bp blessed with pure "prlng waUr.
We presumo tho lots are worth uearly $3,000, and
we look upon tho loan of $ 1 0,000 as realty a gift,
also, which iaakes a magnificent donation to our
school fund these pinching limes. Judge Leonard
is entitled to the thanks of every eitiien of this
borough for this noble act. It Is the lul?ntion of
the Board to proceed at once and rreet a three
story (baneiLeut of stone and balance brick) build
ing, suitable for a first-class high school. This is
a "new departure' we lore to write about. It in
terests everybody and Injures none.

"A Call" Ukfused. Our roudors
no doubt olservsd by a oorrespoodeooe published
in onr column I last weik, that an attempt has
boon made to entice Prof. Harrison from among
ns to a Western field. This would bo a calamity
to the educational interests of this virioity, and it
if well that proper stops have been taken to keep
him among us. This we vnderstand depended
upon tbo cootlngmoy that onr School Dlrootors
would proceed to erect suitable buildings at an
early day. The notion of tho Board last week
thorefore settles the qoestion. A first-olas! build.
