for tbe respective county officers, if
there will be any on hand. -
The card of Mr. George N. Colburn,
proprietor of tho Shaw House, will be

doubt one of thu finest hotels in the
Stale, and we have no doubt but that
the proprietor will render due atten
tion to his guest.
Prof. Harrison gives notice in our
advertising columns, that the 4th and
bst quarter, of this sclioluslic year
commences on Monday tho 20th inst.
Those therefore, who deeiro to avail

Democrats and Republicans, of all
shades and conditions, ond promises
(o make no distinction on account of
race or color, but will sell all goods in
hio line at reasonabto rate to those
who may favor him with their pat
ronage. Tbe Major's word is as good
as a banker note.
Tho crowds that duily tMI find the
amount of goods being sold is ample
proof that Heed's, on Market rUreel,
is the plate to buy Dry (Jooils and
Notions, for Ladies and Children.
Health giving, cold, sparkling, deli

excellent fountain of health.
ENTiBttr Practical. Tho Hunt
ington Journal says: At a recent
Sunday-school mocting in this town,
a young man made a motion that they
appoint a committee- of ladies and
gentlemen to raiso children for tho
Sunday school, but tho girls, then and
there objected. The mailer was post
poned for tho present.
Ratiur Low. The prices realiicd
by our timber merchants in the cast
orn market is not quile as remunera
tive as might be desired, but low grade
prices having set in, every branch of
business must bear its due proportion,
until tho lovolling process passes over
the country. The practice of old line
economy will go far to bring us back
to the olJ luutl marks, And dontrojr all
uusiness vpiuemici, ana Kill on all tho

past, havo blockaded every avenuo of
trade to tbe great detrimontof morals

Tax Notice. Lever Flcgal, Esq ,
Treasurer, this week publishes, in ac
cordance with tho new law relating
to the collection of taxes In this coun
ty, a notice to the taxpayer of the
timo and places wlirre he will meet
them. Tho law allows a discount of
five per cent, for prompt payment, and
adds five per cent, on delinquents, thus
making a real discount of ten per cent.
Each taxpayer is therefore informed
thirty days in advance of tho timo,
and can easily make arrangement fur
tho payment of bis taxes, and full just
that much richer for the balnnco of
the year.
Progress By tbe permission of
our gentlemanly Post Master, Mr.
Gaulin, we were allowed to glean a
few facts from the book in hi office,
which demonstrato pretty clearly that
tho business of our town is largely on
the increase We compared tho quart
er ending March 31st, 1862, with that
of 1870, being eight years ago. The
amount due the Department at the
end of tho quarter in question was
$70 80; that of 170 was 1143.83, over
sixlimc. Thcnewspnpcrpostnge col
lected was 820.55, tho box rent f 14.20,
and letters averaged 51 per day, dur-
ing tho quarter of 1802, whilo the
same quarter in 1870 the formeryield-
ed $51.24, and tho letters (1200, and
the number of lettors mailed duily
exceed 300. Tho aggregate amount
of tho receipts of the office for 16'2
were about $1,000, while those of
I860 amounted to nearly $2,800.
A. 11. Dili, Esq. It was our plcar
nre to meet this gentleman a fow days
ago, who, with bis lady, was paying
a pop visit to his brother residing in
this place. Mr. Dill is one of the
rising Democratic statesmen. lie is
a resident of Lcwisburg, Union Co.,
w lie ro ho holds a loading position at
tho bar. Ho was lust full elected to
tho Legislature by tho Democrats,
whero bo at once assumed a loading
position, and if re-olected he will bo
coino tho leader on tho Democratic
sido of tho House. II is personal popu
larity is demonstrated when we stato
thst ho very nearly carried L'nion
county lust full, in which Goary had
801 majority. Having spent a few
days at the capital during the session
of the Legislature, wo know wheroof
wo speak, and tho Democrats in par
ticular and tho toxpayers generally
will fail to do their duty if they do
not send him to the Senate or the
House this full.
We call the attention of our readers
to the advertisement of Messrs. Thomp
son k Co., Curwcnsvillo, who have
just received, and opened a large
stock of seasonablo goods. Having
purchased at gold rates, they are ena
bled to sell by the same rulo.

A Monster Apple Trek.
Mr. John 11. Meneh, of
Limestone lp., Union Co.,
has an apple treo which
ho thinks is the largest in
the county, ond possibly
the largest in the Slalo.
It eirciiiiiferonee is thir
teen feet and two inches,
and correspondingly great
in ils brunches. Its ago is
probably over ono hun
dred years, as Mr. M. is
credibly informed. It is
slill vigorous and yields
fruit abundantly. A form
or proprietor informed Mr.
M. that ono season ti vrn
barrels of eider were mado
from tho fruit of this re
markablo treo. We don't
know bow large apple trees
grow or how much fruit a

greater than tins Lnion
