Tho law allows a discount of five per cent, for prompt payment, and adds five per cent, on delinquents, thus making a real discount of ten per cent. Each taxpayer is therefore informed thirty days in advance of tho timo, and can easily make arrangement fur tho payment of bis taxes, and full just that much richer for the balnnco of the year. Progress By tbe permission of our gentlemanly Post Master, Mr. Gaulin, we were allowed to glean a few facts from the book in hi office, which demonstrato pretty clearly that tho business of our town is largely on the increase We compared tho quart er ending March 31st, 1862, with that of 1870, being eight years ago. The amount due the Department at the end of tho quarter in question was $70 80; that of 170 was 1143.83, over sixlimc. Thcnewspnpcrpostnge col lected was 820.55, tho box rent f 14.20, and letters averaged 51 per day, dur- ing tho quarter of 1802, whilo the same quarter in 1870 the formeryield- ed $51.24, and tho letters (1200, and the number of lettors mailed duily exceed 300. Tho aggregate amount of tho receipts of the office for 16'2 were about $1,000, while those of I860 amounted to nearly $2,800. A. 11. Dili, Esq.
