ical Colleges in Philadelphia the past

tion has taken a strange turn. None
were granted this term of Court, be
cause of informality, but an adjourned
Court will bo held in two weeks, by
which time it is presumed the defect

' House Burned. The dwelling
house of David Turner, of Boggg
township, was burned to the ground
on the 15th. The family lost every
thing except, the clothes on one bed
and those they had oil their persons.

Death tho past week has removed
from among friends and kindred two
old and esteemed citizens. Wo refer
to Joseph Lines, of Brady township,
ana Unch AlcMuIlcn, of Lawrence
The former we have known for over
thirty years as one of the best citizens
In that section of the county, and ho
often volmleercd us good udvieo.
He removed to Brady in 1828, when

acquaintance with the latter was not
familiar nor long, but ho has passed

The act of incorporation of this line
of Railway authorizes the construction
and operation of a ainglo or double
tract Railway, apon a routo commen
cing at vho West Branch of tho
Susquehanna river at the town of
Clearfield, and extending northwest
ardly by a route to be selected by the
Directors of suid corporation after
careful mirvey to a point on tho
Allegheny Vulley R. R., in tlio county
of Clearfield, and thence crossing tho
same by a route to bo selected in the
same innnnor to a point on tho Phila
delphia & Erio R. K. in the county of
Elk, thence crossing the same by tho
most eligible route by the way of tho
town of Stnelhport, to a point on tho
Buffalo & Washington It. R. in tho
county of McKcan,ond thoro to con
nect with the sumo.
Wo havo not yet had lime to exam
ine tho net in question, but are satis
fied that it is no moon sliino affair,
and will give us a dirocl outlet to tho
northern- lakes for our staples, col
und lumber, and will develop tlio
northern portion of Clearfield county
amazingly within tlio next tun years

. Collection or Taxes. Wo under
stand that ft bill has passed both
branches of our Legislature and is
now before the Governor, and will no
doubt become a law, changing the
whole method of collecting taxes' in
,tbi county, and abolishes tho office
of tax collector. The bill in question,
Authorizes the' county Treasurer to
collect the County, Bounty and Slate
tax. He is required to spend at least
one day in each borough nnd town
riiip, of which lime and placo he must
give thirty days' notice, In two news
papers, and by hand bille posted up at
publio places, upon nil Inxes paid to
the Treasurer between tho first of Jfny
and September there shall bean abate
mont of 6 per cent. And upon taxes
unpaid nt the lutlcr period, thore shall
bo added 5 per font, and the duplicate
delivered to the Constable of tho dis
triet, who will proceed to collect the
taxes aforesaid, as debts of similar
amounts are now collected by writs of
execution.
This law has been in force In Von
lingo, Clarion, Jefferson and other
counties, for many years and work
well. The taxes arc promptly imid at
less cxiionse to iho Treasury, and the

tion of its rays is such that vou can

at the bead of Bothia whero on the
21st of Juno tho sun doe not appear
to go down at all. Tho steamboat goes
up from Stockholm for tho putposo of
conveying those who are curious to
witness the tilionomenon. It occurs
only one night. The sun reaches tho
horizon, you can boo the whole lace of
it, und in fivo minutes moro it begins
to rise. At tho North Capo, latitude
scvonty-two degrees, the sun doos not
go down for several weeks. Jn June
11 wotiiu ue about twonty nve degrees
above tho horizon at midnight. In
tho winter the sun disappears and is
not soon for weeks ; then it comos nnd
romuins for ten or iiitoon minutes, af
ter which it descends, and finally is
not set at all, but makes almost a cir
cle round tho heavens. The Swedes
nro very industrious, and labor is
reckoned by tho hour, twelve hours
being reckoned a dny's work. Birds
