The Democratic organization, pro
Bcrvcd through years of darkness,
doubt, and despair,' by a few brave,
bold souls, is, thcrctoro, at prone ut
the only refWo for those flying from
the horror of Radicalism. Jt is the
eole, safe harbor and asylum for the
many good men who start back ap
pulled from the croul which Phillips,
Stevens, and Greeley point out to
them. JSy tho fuct, however, ol its
being the only existing opposition to

no less inevitable. Is in some tneusurc
ictarded. It cannot be donied that
many now remain within tho Repub
lican pale, morely because there is no
other fold to receive them if they loft
than the Democracy. There isa large
class of temperaments, of whom we
wish to speak resnoctlully, who can
not stand strong food and bright lights
of any kind. To such the Democratic
party is at present distasteful. They
recoil from Radicalism, but they can't
dijest Democracy. They would wil
lingly leave the former, but they are
not hardy enough yet for tho latter.
So they stand trembling within the
Republican linos, either not voting at
all, or else hesitatingly and irotu tho
force of habit supporting a policy
whose results they dare not look in
tho face. The Hcll-Evcrctt party was
a congenial fold for this large class, f
such wo believe it to be. There th
for
cy
could air their conservatism, without
bringing it in contact with the dreaded
.Democracy.
Its tint was neutral. It abhorred
positive colors. It was neither for nor
against slavery, iuo territorial ques
tion it prelurreu not to be aware of,
Stabene was its motto. And its request
to anxious enquirers tho raco of
"earnest men had not in those days
arisen was, "do not tell ug anything
disagreeable. ltsrango was not vcrv
distinct or sharply defined, but it had
generally tho Constitution and tho
Vnion and the I'lug, and all thoso
conventionalities, and in it one could
lie down and sleep and bo happy, nor
a road the rude alarms ol its more pro
nounced antagonists. Of course the
quivering, fitful light which this col
orless flume gave forth was soon blown
out by the force blasts of the war.
Its component parts went according
to their utlini ties. A few of the bravest
came ovor to the Democracy, but a
large mass fled shivering back, under
cover ot loyalty, to the Republicans.
During the hot passions of the strife,
all elements were sublimated into the
patriotio gas. No precipitates of con-
aorvatism were permitted to form
Now the heat is dead or dvinrr. Con
densation is taking place, and all tho
little crystals of conservatism, of dread
of Radicalism, and of hnmuiiity, oro
vegiumug u appear in me social cru
cible. The furnace of war being out, there
is .no longer any power to keep to
gether these diverse tcmperamonts,
and the Conservative eloment, which
can only combine with Radicalism at
a high tomporatnre, is slowly but
surely depositing itself. To dron the
chemical metaphor, that portion of
mo jicpnoiican party which respects
law, order, and the white raco, is try
ing to get away from its uncongoniul
past without exactly knowing how
best to do it. Tho duty, then, of tho
Democracy is a very plain one. While
it adheres unflinchingly to every plauk
in its time-honored platform, it must
respect this tenderness and thoso scru-
Slcs, and assist them out of their
ileuima. It must not frighten them
off. A tone of fiertt, which was prop,
er enough not long ago, in repelling
the insolent aggressions, would be
much out of pluce now. A flippant
causticity or contempt for thoso who
havo not yet mounted to tho braoing
atmosphore in which we brealho, will
not attract them np to our altitude
