The conviction ln been (,'row in i; fur Kcveral yonra in tlio miitdn of tSuliluith -school workers, that ftnch nn orj;aiii.ntiin wits noodod. It wan be lieved tlmt orHiiixntion would pro duce irreater vif;or and thoroughness, ami cNH'ciully that it would lead to a more thorough supply of tho wusto plucott. Tho succoskIuI cxnmplo of oth er Stutofl, both oast und west, strength ened this convictio ', and led to the holding of several important fonvon titiin.atnd finully to u inutiirnd organ ization. The tirst Stulo Convention wai bold in Philadelphia, in May, 1802. Tho second was held at l'itls burg in May, and adjourned to meet ut llarrisburg tho following year. Lee's invuhion, however, and the confusion following tliut event, prevented the meeting. Mut lent con tinued in tliirj condition iiiitil May of tne present year, when a third con vention was held in Philadelphia, which was largely attended from all parts of tho Suite, and resulted in the formation of a permanent society, with n, board of .Managers and a sal aried Secretary, who is to give his whole time to the work. This ltut fcaturo we regard as a vital one, and the general acquiescence, which it ob tained, and the promptness with which tho money needed was rnndo up, showed that the delegates were in earnest in the work, and appreciated rightly its character. The new Association numbers in it Board of Managers some of the best known and most active Sabbath school men in the State. Its Presi dent, Matthew Neivkirk, Esq., is a veteran in tho cause. Hon. J nines Pollock, Chairman of the Business Committee, is too well known to need introduction to any Pennsylvania readers. Rev. Alfred Taylor, State Secretary, is a live man. and thorough ly acquainted with the Sabbath-school work. Tho board has appointed its committees, and is already iu working order. The work to bo done by such an organization is large and various, and practically without limit. Jt will be finished only when, every child in the Stato is in the Sabhatlj scliool. and every child in the Sabbath school is converted and brought into the church. There are, however, two points of immediate practical impor tance to which the Jlauugers slioulj give attention. One is tho formation of county associations; the other is tbe holding of Normal Institutes. A S'ite society is to accomplish its work mainly by awakening and or ganizing the elticiency of others. Jt does not expect to form schools, or to do the work of toKching. lis aim as a central organization, is to put it- seu into sunny contact anl Kytupaliiy with local influences all over the Slate. There is no county in the Slate in which there are not to be found warm-hearted, earnest Chris tians, men and women, ready to co operate actively and wisely. The first buiness of the Stnto Association is to find out these earnest workers. If half a dozen men of the right stamp can be got together in any county, they can easily devise measures for perfecting a county organization, and can secure some one competent, nnd willing to undertake tho duties of county sec retary. These county or gunizalions are tho very life of tho system, ioinin:. directly into contact wilh the schools and actual work The measure of tho success achieved by the State Association will bo the number aud character of tho county associations it can cull into existence. These county associations ought to have much of a missionary character and spirit. They ought to aim, in tho first place, to make a complete SahbHth-school census, finding out ex actly how many children nro in the Sabbath school and how many ure out Of it. In the second place, they ought to aim to bring every neglcciod child under the influence of religious in struction, and to bvo that a school is eitahlished wherever there is a popu lation sufficient to sustain one. Wo have spoken of Normal Insti tutes. The Stalo Association has a great and immediate work to do in regard tc them. These Institutes do not train teachers. It is a grave mis take to hope for any such result from them. Uul they are of tho utmost importance in diffusing right ideas among teachers. There ure great truths in teaching, which are never rightly apprehended until we see them practically illustrated From a good Model Lesson, a live teacher will gather ideas - hat come to him iu no other way. And then what noble thoughts are brought out by soma of the lecturers on these occasions, and bow many practical hints arc elicited in the free and fraternal interchange Of views (hat takes place ! Theso spe cial lnt titutes in largo and influential centres are most important means of perle ting our educational machinery The Stuto Association should uiiu to bold at least fifteen or twentv such during tho current year. Sunday- j I will enjoy a!l things in God, and God in all things j nothing in iipelf; so shall mv jot. a neither chungo nor perish. For however Iho things themselves may alter or fade, yet he in whom they are mine is even like himself constant and everlasting. Surely wc are w ise for anything but our souls ; and not ss wiso for tho body as so foolish for them. O Lord, thy payment is sure ; and w ho knows bow present? Take the soul that thou hast both made and bought; and let me rather give my life for thy power, than uke the offers of the world for noil ing. There is no doubt that Dr. Mason was a good judge. A brother minis ter intending to purchaso a horse, topped the doctor to ask his opinion. After taking a good look at hint, lr. Mason pointed to the knees of the horse, which were worn, indicating that be was in the habit of stuinbling "That," said he, "is a good sign for a minister, but a very bad sign for a Banister's bone."
