This distribution of the victories noion*,; U
rhe vessels and all the commanders o! hU
American line shows, as conclusively a*
anything can, the intrinsic superiority ol
the line itself over its great rival, of which
the two shortest voyages ever performed
, tll&ro by tho Asia, Captain Judkins, in ten
days, four hours, and fifty-two minutes,
j and the Arabia, also Captain Judkins, m
i ten ddys, threo hours, and thirty minutes.
I The ordinary average trips have exhibited
i st still greater disparity in speed. Iho
nverago of the voyages performed in the
year 1852, by the Collins lino from Now
York to Liverpool, was ten days nineteen
hours,and fourteen minutes; from Liver-
I pool to Now Yprk, eleven days, sixteen
j hours, and twentv-four miuutes. Tho
’ average of tho trips performed in tho same
i poriod by the Cunard line from New iork
to Liverpool was eleven days, eight hours,
and fifty-five minutes; from Liverpool
to New York, twelve days, eleven hours,
and thirty minutes. Lis but fair to say,
however, that there have been other com
putations making the difference somewhat
less, but vet not very materially. It must
however,* be borne in mind that three on.y
of the Cunard steamers have the size and
power of the Collins steamers—the Asia,
the Africa, and tho Arabia. The two first
have been almost uniformly beaten m both
directions, though by no means so consid
erable as in the other cases. The Arabia,
I with a power much more largely propor
| lioned to its size than exists in any or the
3 Collins line, and of which the highest ex-
I peCtations were formed by our English
I friends, has yet performed but two voyages
which fairly tested her best abilities—one
in February from New York to Liverpool
• in ten days, three hours, and thirty minutes
and the other in April from Liverpool to
Now York in.tea.days and nineteen hours.
Considering that the Collins line have now
triumphantly mainlined their ground for
1 three years ngainsTevery successive vessel
that the long experience and : great resour
ces of the Cunard line have been able to
bring out against them, we belive wo are
fully entitled to regard this contest in i
steam navigation as settled in favor To
Amorican skill and American enterprise..
“In regard to sailling vessels, the samej
superiority is as strikingly mahifest. 1 he.
