A LETTER FROM GENERAL FIERCE* Wo copy the following touching letter from the ‘'Presbyterian, 1 ' written by Gon. Pierce, to a personal friend, sooa.afler his retirement from the United States Senate some years since, in reply to a letter of condolence on the death of a beautiful and m anly boy, his cherished son. A later and still more melancholy bereavement gives it an additional interest, that .all will appreciate. General Pierce writes as a Christian should write, yet as one who, under the. sorrowful circumstances of the case, must also “(eel it like a man. Concord, N. H., Nov. 30th,- . Mv DEAR friend: You have been oft en in my thoughts since I received your affectionate letter of the 10th mst. It was one of the earliest of the kind from my personal friends— soothing and grateful to me at the time. And it has been pleasant ; - since, to think of you ns among those who ' have truly sympathized with us m this i dark hour of overpowering affliction. . | Under bereavement like this, how tr fling—O, how very trifling—do most o> the cares, and purposes, and plans of this world appear 1 Wo can hardly realize how it is, that our hearts have been en grossed in little matters of the day. We open our eyes, as it were, from a dream, upon the realities that are around and be fore us. We see “passing away written upon all things of this world. Wo fed that wo are more sojourners, probationers here, and seem to estimate with an ap proximation to truth tho great interests ol eternity, as compared with those of time. Ido earnestly desire to keep awake to these matters; not to fall into the spel, where, as it were from necessity, we look through a false medium, which places eternity so for off, and gives tothethings of time sucty vast magnitude and dispro- the conversation on| our ride to the G to which, I suppose, you refer. The convictions of my judg ment have long been strong and dec.ded hut the little influence they have had upon my life is a Bad illustration or the greal truth, “With the heart man believelh unto T ' B Our was ill three weeks, and the last four days of his life was a period of much suffering. In the midst of our deep sorrow, I find inexpressible!relief in the thought that “it is well with the child. He said much, to use his own expression, of “the blessed Jesus,” especially on tlie Sabbath. And now. his indefinate ex-; pressions and childish fanciesare exchang ed for full knowledge and never ending fruition. He is, ns we firmly bslievc, “Where no blight falls % On tho beautiful rose of youth. * He was a bright, -affectionate, manly Jboy—the pride and joy of his fathers heart-tho light and life of our home.- We now feel, and must long continue to feel his loss. Wo are conscious of his absence at every turn. We weep, butthe cup of sorrow is not unmingled with rich consolation. # * A 9.;i I have many things to say to you when (t*rThe Delegates from Pembina, three in number, to the Minnesota Teritonnl Legislature, occupied 20 days to St. Pauls in sleighs, drawn by d*s. >Their counstituents number ticenty-ekht.
