Friday night, Feb. 20," to the Liverpool
Journal, says: "When the Premier un
wanted his resignation, the greatest, as

was not sufficient, nor did it suit the feel
ing Of the country. But it should be ade
quate to meet such an unfortunate emer
gency. What he wanted was a ready
trained force, prepared for action at the
shortest notice. All the objections to the
proposal of a regular militia were founded
inn distrust of the peOple, and implied that
Englishmen were cheats,,,,,Scotchmen cow
ards and Irishmen traitors. If we could
not trust the nation to defend itself, we had
better give up the idea of defence, (tremen
dous cheers) and send for Russian and
Austrian soldiers. He was confident that
the people would answer a proper appeal on
the part of the Government, by proving to
the world that we are prepared for defence,
and would thereby preserve ourselves thel
blessings of peace ."
, The London Times says, "Possibly the
minister stopped to evade a fatal blow on
the Cape question, and has made his fall
with considerable judgment. If saved on
the Caffre question, he would have been
wrecked on the reform bill. Lord Palmer
ston will most likely, resign the task of
forming a government to the protectionist
chief, who has long since proclaimed that
his arrangemeets are made, and that he
has only to walk in and take possession;
and that he had really no choice but to do
what hetould—whether for six weeks or
six months. Lord Derby will most likely,'
be our minister next week. He has some
thing in his favor. The new reform bill
will not stand much in his way."

DREADFUL AFFAIR IN TEXAS.--The
Red Land Herald contans an account of
a bloody occurrence which recently took
place in She!shy countr , Texas. John
and Henry Wadkins met Capt. Marvel H.
Mosely in the road, near the residence of
Col.E. Myrick, and informod him that
they designed killing him. Suiting the
action to the word, one of the Wadkins
fired a ball into Mosely's right cheek, which
caused him to fall from his horse. Mosely
then attempted to escape by running, but
was again brought to a halt by the dis
charge of a rifler from the other Wadkins.
Moscly was now upon the ground and up-.
parently in the last agonies of death, but
still the assailants continued to fire at him.
As many as ten or a dozen different reports
were heard by persons living near the
scene. Believing Mosely to be dead, Wad
kins mounted their horses and left, since
which time they have not been heard of.
Capt. Mosely at the last accounts was
still alive, but his recovery was considered
doubtful.
