.LAfiER FROM EUROPE. . . , , Arrival of the Antellea; ' By the America, which arrived at Hali fax on Thursday the 4th inst., we have the .follinvind additional items t AFFAIRS IN ENGLAND. A despatch, !lined "House of Commons, Friday night, Feb. 20," to the Liverpool Journal, says: "When the Premier un wanted his resignation, the greatest, as tonishuient was felt t the members appear. ed to have been entirely in the dark, drk and no one was prepared for what a sud denly taken place. All is bustle and won der here. The talk in the House is, that the Queen will not have anything to do with Palmerston, and that the Earl of Der by will'at once accept the office." The same journal states that Lord Pal; menston, in moving his amendment, said that "the country was in a situation liable to war,and our armament, in time of peace, was not sufficient, nor did it suit the feel ing Of the country. But it should be ade quate to meet such an unfortunate emer gency. What he wanted was a ready trained force, prepared for action at the shortest notice. All the objections to the proposal of a regular militia were founded inn distrust of the peOple, and implied that Englishmen were cheats,,,,,Scotchmen cow ards and Irishmen traitors. If we could not trust the nation to defend itself, we had better give up the idea of defence, (tremen dous cheers) and send for Russian and Austrian soldiers. He was confident that the people would answer a proper appeal on the part of the Government, by proving to the world that we are prepared for defence, and would thereby preserve ourselves thel blessings of peace ." , The London Times says, "Possibly the minister stopped to evade a fatal blow on the Cape question, and has made his fall with considerable judgment. If saved on the Caffre question, he would have been wrecked on the reform bill. Lord Palmer ston will most likely, resign the task of forming a government to the protectionist chief, who has long since proclaimed that his arrangemeets are made, and that he has only to walk in and take possession; and that he had really no choice but to do what hetould—whether for six weeks or six months. Lord Derby will most likely,' be our minister next week. He has some thing in his favor. The new reform bill will not stand much in his way." The Morning Herald declares that "Lord DeThey will be prepared to take of fice. Though sudden the event was not unexpected. The Morning Post says, "The victory was worthy of Palmerston. It was not - a party, but a national question." The opposition peers had met at the Earl ' of Derby's, and had agreed to offer the ! I most determined resistance to the new Re- 1 form bill, on its second reading in the House of Lords. Tan CATHOLICS AND THE PILESUYTE- 1 sztAris.—The Dublin Evening Post men tions, on what it considers unqustionable authority, that some of the Romlin Catho- 1 lie clergy, who had become unpopular on account of their opposition to secret socie. l ties, have been served with notices to desist.' Whilst the Catholic priests aro preachind against their combinations, some of the -ablest and most independent of the Presby terian ministers have been distinguished by their loud and vehementabju rations against - tho landed proprietors. In the north of Ireland a formidable combination exists a gainst the payment of rents; and such is the state of' excitement against the land lords, that several of they' have given up all 'notion of enforcing payment under pres. -.ent circumstances. It was stated that the Presbyierian tenantry, in some localities, were offering a passive resistance to the • payment of rents. DEA.TIE Or THE BISHOP OF ACHORAY, XrC."-The Tam Herald announces the death of the Right Rev. Dr. McNicholas, . • Bishop of Achonry. Mr. John Isaac Herd had been elected for Kinsale, in place of Mr. Benjamin Hawes, without opposition. A fire broke out, on the morning of the 20th ult., at Trinity Hall, Cambridge on the side of thecollege facing Trinity L ane. It was subdued before extending further. Fitssicie.—The new British ambassador, Lord Cowley, arrived in Paris on Wed nesday, the 11th. , The government, it is said, manifested great fear that General Cevaignac will be elected in several districts. A decree has been published ol d sabhing the fetes of Feb. 24 and May 4, sub- Otitliting, as the only anniversary worthy of commemoration, the birthday of Napol eon. John and Henry Wadkins met Capt. Marvel H. Mosely in the road, near the residence of Col.E. Myrick, and informod him that they designed killing him. Suiting the action to the word, one of the Wadkins fired a ball into Mosely's right cheek, which caused him to fall from his horse. Mosely then attempted to escape by running, but was again brought to a halt by the dis charge of a rifler from the other Wadkins. Moscly was now upon the ground and up-. parently in the last agonies of death, but still the assailants continued to fire at him. As many as ten or a dozen different reports were heard by persons living near the scene. Believing Mosely to be dead, Wad kins mounted their horses and left, since which time they have not been heard of. Capt. Mosely at the last accounts was still alive, but his recovery was considered doubtful. ANOVIER SCIEN 71 FR: WON DER PEesth t.n Artificial Digestive Fluid, or Gastric Juice !
