We see light. The circumstance which we have de tailed elsewhere of a mall being arrest vd while attempting to run a spun of hoises into New York, recalls a condition of tilings that lias existed in the Intnber region south of here for several years past. and which seems to continue. At this season of the year, just as the snow is going off and work on tlic jolis closing up, we invariably hear of fail ures; jol<l>ers leaving without settling with their hands, anil without provid ing for their payment, and men seta home after a hard winter's work in the snow and cold pother than when they went tin '• in the fall, and with no means of redress. Tiiis state of tilings has 'oecouie a regular occurrence, and when we see men going to the lumber woods to work we have learned to look upon them as {•rotable victims of the next spring's frauds. Tliat there are many honorable ex ■ ceptions to this way of doing business among jobliers we do not deny, but tliere are so many repietitiions of it that we are forced to the conclusion that a large number of inconi}*tent or dUhotitrt men are engaged in the business. • (an any body tell how long we have had continuous sleighing? It seems to us a month or so more would bring it around very near the starting point., The Buffalo Express seems to consider the forest region of Pennsylvania, that has lately leen connected with that city by railroad, as a sort of wild suburb. It enumerates the hunting and fishing out this way among the many advanta ges Buffalo i>ossesses as a summer resi dence. But then, some people's ideas are very expansive. A letter recei\ed from Hon. J. S. Maun, dated March Bth. says, " We are beginning to make progress in the Con vention. and I feel encouraged. There are three kinds of deeds which, done in a community, argue a low state of civilization, if not a very bad state of society. Of these three, the worst is tar ringand feathering a man and riding him on a rail. No one w ill dispute the utter wickedness of a proceeding like this, and it is something that lias not dis graced the annals of our Mate for many a year, with one or two exceptions, anil those have been marked with a speedy punishment of the participators of the outrage against society. Toe silliest of the three deeds is what is called " horn-. mg a newly married couple." Thi> is undertaken mostly in those settlements far removed from railroads or newspa pers, where there is but little religion and no morals to sp*_ak of. Where the fun of it is the most industrious would fail to discover, and what the object is is equally past finding out. Like the first mentioned, this deed also has be come a thing of the post in this Mate. The meanest of the three deeds has no name —it is too mean to have a distinct calling —hut it consists in lite bothering and torturing of a drunken man. Bait ing a bull or teasing ati d tear is kind ness in comparison with this. — Ehnira Adit rtisrr. We commend tiie good sense of the Advertiser in regard to the al<ove sule; jects. But there is one thing that is, meaner than bothering a drunken man, il is teasing those unfortunate beings \vho by nature 01 accident are deprived . ■of the average amount of reason. A drunken man is an object or pity, but lie is responsible for his condition, tlie idiot or ' half fool" is the victim of circumstances for which lie is not ac ' countable. Any one who indulges in sport at the expanse of such a one. shows ;• depravity more lamentable than their victim's lack of reason. The Aowriettn W'-rkityj I'f-plt , pub lislied at Pittsburg.
