This is made of No. 2 oatmeal, -with water enough to saturate it. and little ! or no salt. Pour it in a baking tin half an inch or three-quarters deep, shake it down level, and when this is done it should be so we: that two or three spoonfuls of water should run freely on the surface. Put it m a qu.ck oven and bake twenty minutes. It will be as light and tender as the best johnny-cake, or else you have wet it too much or baked it too long. This is one of the most accommodating baked dishes that can be made. It will do very nicely with a little longer time if the oven is not quite hot. If it will not bake there a: all pour it in to a frying-pan. cover i: close, where it will bake in Cf:een minutes. For a hurried breakfast and a slow fire it is invaluable. Scarcely any wholesoroe thing in the bread line can be prepared more readily. It can be made still: :inner and baked quicker. It is good either crisp or moist. For - 1 emergencies alone, every housekeeper will find it convenient to be able to make this kind of cake. Many use oatmeal mixed with buckwheat, wheat or corn for griddle-cakes. Take, say one-htdf of the porridge or the mush, diffuse it in one quart of water and add the wheat meai. sifting it in and stirring slowly.— Science of Health. THE Panama Star d Herald gives a striking illustration of the vigor aud rapidity of vegetation in the trop ics. by referring to the bushes and trees growing in the ruins of the burned Aspinwall Hotel at Panama.- It is scarcely more than two years since this conflagration took place,j and yet there are now growing with in the walls trees at least thirty feet I in height. They lelong to what are called trumpet trees (genus Cecropia) ' and the branches are -aid to be crowd- j ed out of the highest doors and w in- ! dows, so as to rend r it probable that in their further growth they will throw down the w alls with which they are interlaced. THE term horse-power, as applied to steam boilers. i so indefinite that it has come to be regarded by many engineers as practically useless. A j committee recently appointed by the} Franklin Institute of Philadelphia, recommended that its use t>e discon tinued. One of the members said that horse-power, as the term was j u>ed by engineers and boiler-makers, indicated an actual power, which in one case sometimes varied one hun dred per cent, fiiom that in ano.her. Colds and how to treat them. When you are attacked again with a hard cold treat it as follows: Eat no supper. On gingto bed drink' tw o tumblers of cold water. On ris ing in the morning drink freely of cold water. For breakfast eat a piece of bread as large as your hand. Go out freely during the morning. For dinner eat about the same as you I ate at breakfast. During the after noon take a sharp walk or engage in some active exercise which shall pro-j duce a little perspiration. Go with- 1 out your supper and retire early, drinking, before you jump into bed, as much cold water as you can swal low. The next morning you are nearly well. If, instead, you feel the cold. it. will stay a week or ten days, and wind up with a hard cough and expectoration. A cold is not.as many think, th • result alone of exposure to a sudden change in the atmosphere. It is the product of two factors: one i is a certain condition of the within, and the other is a certain condition of the without. The only soil in which this plant can grow is a certain condition of the system, the promi nent feature of which is a deranged' stomach. Those who have good di gestions very rarely have colds. So. to prevent colds, you must keep your! stomach in good condition: in other! words, you must keep yourself iu high health. There are some habits which give a geniral tendency to c< Lds. For example, the use of hot drinks which, in addition to flooding and weakening the stomach, open th - 'kin. and in crease thereby sensibility to the in flucnce of external changes.
