vied to come back with sufficient foice to mike' the arrest. My friund S. R. was present. and saw the fun. I will keep you posted es to his success. • H. Y. LAWRENcE, E. T., April 21, '56 Fiacto) L.: 'As I have been in this place four days, I will try and give you something of an idea of the cit) of Lawrence. It is beautifully situa ted on a rolling prairie bordering on the. Kansas River, 60 miles from its junction with the Missouri, 40 miles from Kansas City. 25 from Topeka, and 11 from Lecompton. Lawtence can boast M a Hotel second to none this side of St. Louis. After it is fin ished it will cost over 820,000. It will be ready to receive trart.lers in about two weeks. The money is raised for the purpose of building three stone churches which are to cost SlO,OOO each; one of them is already com menced. There is a good quarry of stone close to the city. There are fi re d r y goods stor4in Lawrence, one drug store, one book store, two stove and tin stores. We have 13 Ministers of the Gospel, 14 Physicians, and 15 Members of the Bar. (Some of them are practicing with the crow-bar.) This is decidedly' a great place for professional men. The Prairies of Kansas surpass anything that I ever saw in any of the Western States. No man need wish for any better country naturally than Kansas ; but like all other new coun tries, it needs men with capital ; and to give my own opinion, I think there is the best chance here for capitalists to make money, this side of the At lantic Ocean. There is plenty of wood here, and 1 am told, good coal 'close to the city. There will be a large number of houses put up here.this ESIIII3 The Investigating Committee are here, and wilt hold their first session in this place. They will probably organize this week. There is some excitement here at, present, caused by Shetiff Jones trying to arrest S. M. Wood, Esq., one of the twelve that rescued Branson last winter. You will probably recollect the affair. It is rumored here that Jones has gone to Missouri for Border Ruffians. If he has, ho will need to get several. The c•trrespondent of the Journal will keep you posted; if he don't. 1 will. This is decidedly a great town, tl say nothing of the back-ground. 13011(.1 35.00 per week ; potatoes $4.00 per bushel. • • • • Court Pruclawutlou.
