Wow IltOX A BOIMIIM JIM We are indebted to a friend in Ms.: ;s ari for an occasional number of the St Louis Daily Democrat. Though a suppo rter of Pierce at the time of his election, and published in a slave State, i t is an outspoken, liberty-loving, in dependent paper, as unlike the crin ging, doughface papers of this State, s s light its unlike darkness. After „ ti ding such sheets as the Lycoming Gazette and its Coudersport echo, it is r efreshing to turn so the'St. Louis ,Gatocrat, whose articles read as if a men indited them. The correspond ence of the Democrat is equally bold. As a sample of this, take the following e xtract from its Kansas correspond ence in relation to the President's special message. Has any old line D e mocratic paper in Pennsylvania shown half the ludependence of the Democrat I LtkftSWOUTR CITY, K. T., Feb. 4, 1E56. To the Editor of the Missouri Democrat : Sit; We have received the special message of President Pierce in rela tion to - Kansas affairs. There is great re joicing in Platte county. The general m essage pleased them—it caused them to pronounce Pierce sound to the core ; but this special message has de lighted them beyond expression, by he promises of inaction, and the un blushing effrontery with which it throws the odium of the outrages practiced here on the peaceable citi zens of the Territory, who endured t h e m, We, the Squatters of Kansas, guilty of uo offense save submitting to illegal proceedings, which we have not yet the strength to repel, are placed in the position of revolutionary bandits, while the borderers, who have shot down our citizens, elected our legislators, and threatened us with ex termination, are alluded to in terms 041 gentle reproof. dilated with an excuse , for their self-defensire conduct.! I came to Kansas a pro-slavery man ; but, educated to respect the law and scorn its breakers—no matter what their excuse---1 ca not, could not long remain in their ranks. No true ) Southern gentleman can remain in such a party as that which styles itself' the law and order party of Kansas, un less he happen(' to be an office-hold . sr, or to have invested all his capital in the power of these men. When I read this special message of the President, I dunked God I was a Seatherner. No Southern man would be mean enough to betray his constituents as Pierce has betrayed his Northern brethren, or dare to libel them as Pierce has libelled the peace able, intelligent, conservative New England emigrants in Kansas. President Pierce's decided forte, as a politician, is to create political capi tal for his political opponents. If his course, doting his occupancy of the Presidential chair, does not sustain this proposition, this special message will amply demonstrate the fact. .He elaborately desiroys the force or re futes his favorite theories—knocks squatter sovereignty into an extremely cocked hat by declaring its exer else revolutionary, and there is hardly one historical statement in his message whi - ch cannot be disproved by ineon trovertable evidence. Republic= Meeting At a Republican meeting held on the 20th day of February, ISSG, at the Borough of Coudersport, N. J. Mills was called to the Chair, and W. B, Graves was chosen Secretary. Hon; 3. Ross.vvas appointed a. delegate to represent Potter county iu the Repub lican Convention , to be be held at Pittsburg, on the 22nd inst., with power to substitute. On motion, Raoli;42, That Isaac Benson, Esq., be recommended as representative delegate to represent this district in Convention to be held at Harrisburg on the 26th of March next, with power to substitute. Also that L. P—Williston be recommended as Senatorial delegate, to represent this Senate district in said convention. J. MILLS, President. W. B. GRAVES, Secretary. For the Journal, CARL!, 0., Jars. 14, 1656, MIL EDITOR :• I Presume. your readers vrill be ietereated in learning the result of the ap plication of legal suasion among the rumsellers of the Buckeye State: I have traveled in the State nearly all the fall and winter, and can give you a tolerable idea of the condition of things; hence I write you. In some towns, I am sorry to say, little at. sention is paid to the law, and rum and bad whisky-are dealt out at . 3 cents per glass, or a half dime as the case may be; and the tem perance men look on, conscious that they can do nothing without incu'rring popular disfavor that would be ruinous to their business. In such places, of tonne, the law is a nullity ex cept as it merely outlaws the business, and renders the vender a little less ,bold and defi ant. In other places I find the people divided into two classes—the white people, as they are called, and the black Dutch. By this they mean that class of the German people who are *amt. and *nutted to their Lager Beer. In inch towns the low German population and, the American mingle but little, and if thestend er of Dutch beer chooses to continue the busi ness among his own class, the "white people" take little notice of the matter. .In otker towns woe be to him who attempts to distribute liquid death to his neighbors. If he is not prOsecii ted, he is likely to. be treated with such utter contempt that his own moral corruption sinks him beyond the reach of redemption—yes, lower than Ohio mud. You will. see from the above facts that the law is working as well as its most sanguine friends could have anticipated. The laws against theft, gambling, and lotteries, all tie knowledge to be. healthful in their moral re cults, and highly important; yet wefind , neigh borhoods and towns were gambling, lotteries, profanity, and Sabbath-breaking pass unnoticed by the authorities and the moral sense soci ety. Why, then, should we expect ttii one sanitary measure to accomplish at once all that we might desire it to effect He who could look for this, must either be unacquainted with human law and character, or destitute of sound sense. In looking over the condition of soci ety in the Buckeye State, we see DO cause for discouragement to the friends of Prohibition, but oa the contrary, cause for congratulation. It has taken' more than 25 yews of earnest and continued effort to bring the Temperance cause to its present prosperous State, and those who can look back at tho coaditon of society then, and contrast it with its present state, must see at a glance that great success has crowned, their efforts. This may be a cause of hope foi the future, and will lead to an unwavering I trust in the final triumph of our principles. Let none be disheartened, then, but labor on confident that as sure as there is a God of justice upon Heaven's eternal throne, so sure ly we shall triumph. We shall see the day, and that speedily, when the last draught of in toxication shall be taked; and when the last alcoholic fire shall have'died out of the breast of civilized men. " Speed, 0, speed that happy day, Let Earth and Heaven united pray, 0, make that prayer the first the last, Till iife'a brief pilgrimage is past." Orntral Informatfas. UNITED ST.!
