For the ben thee \vim may consider me en unerac grounds by imputing to undue credit, c , mseque t nt debt, vice, immor ality. and crime, I cite the case of "Prof. Webster and Dr. Parkman" of 16tfut. Time one was murdered be- CalSe the other had ran into his debt b.2y, , na his ability to pay. The phi- Ia Tide eve and business like mind of of Dr. Franklin discovered that pov erty was the result of credit and it'bt , , and. hence wrote this wise • couplet: 'Pray take air advice, ir a fortune. you'd get: 1:1t N-ott owe, and keep oat ordebt." 'litin g • halt' Yankee, I chant the l'ri;ilege of using plain language ; 11 41 mostsay that, according to my tlt , ervation and experience in lifo, :: , iidenc e and poverty drags at the of lung credit and 'extended I. , .tnents of debts. Look at Potter c)untv, sonic townships of which have lardly one thousand acres of cleared 1 4r , d. Farms meagerly improved; up ''a which are due at the land office t: idle the original cost when articled, ‘itll from one to three judgments registered on the Prothonotary's dock- Et, ready to eat up the occupant's chances. Compare her condition with Western States, not settled one-fourth lung, where settlers have paid down tor land and kept clear from debt. Now, it is "Jonathan's" opinion that People about here had better go to work and improve their rich lands, pay off their debts, and not patronize merchants till they can pay down for their goods. Let the "aoode wire" and fair daughter wear the old dress till the old one can be paid for, `lathe, husband then will be an inde pendent man. And here my thoughts turn again to the condition of our commonschools. Does the reader wish to know how the credit system effects that ? We ask him to consider the value of school drafts .-effered in -. market. - Who are willing to buy them at 20 per -cent: discount, and- pay cash 1 . How :many land offices will receive them at par? How many merchants are willing to pay the face of them in ; goods? Do the good people of Potter• county ex pect that teachers, enterprising and well qualified, will come here, or stay hero and teach their schools, when the only prospect for .pay is a ,sel i ppl draft," while often wearing it half out in his pocket, and making sundry visits to the treasurer, whose pockets are commonly empty, and listen to the story of taxes not collected, or delin quent, defaulting ex -treasurers, and finally Le obliged to traffic it off for six or seven shillings on the dollar ? if they do, they will find them Selves mistaken. NOW it seems to me, if we wish to elevate the condition of our schools, we must have first class teach ers, give them fair wages, and above all, pay them down at the end of cacti term. In Yankee land, we used to think the school teacher was somebody," and deserved his pay when his work was done; and hence had good teach ers and good schools. Gentlemen directors, and all con cerned, think of these things. Raise your taxes, collect them, pay them at first call; then pay the teacher. Never employ a poor teacher, for they are the worst specimens• of poverty im _aginable. Be sure to get a good teach er, and see to it that the ready" is on hand and - in safe deposit for him when his task is done, and I venture my reputation that our schools will progress rapidly. But this miserable credit system will keep everybody and everything clothed in poverty. I do not know as the citizens of Potter county «•ill relish my " Thoughts," but I believe they will ere - long agree with JONATUAN. Orbitation. I The new M. E Church at Coudersport, Pot ter.eounty.
