The old J.Vatioita/ Intelligencer, after a painful and lingering illness, in the sixty ninth year of its age. It was founded with the city of Washington in the year 1800, under the auspices of the Jeffersonian re publican party Brie Jefferson's administra tion, by Gales and Seaton, and published by them jointly for over forty years, and by Seaton, the surviving partner, for some ten or fifteen years longer. At his death a former clerk of the establishment, Mr. Coyle, with several associates, finan cial and editorial, took the paper in band; but i t bad long before fallen into a decline, from:which all efforts to resuscitate it wore useless. In August, 1814, with the occupation of Washington by the British army, after the battle of Bladensburg, the Intelligencer office vas honored with a sacking by a detachment of the British troops. That was the making of the pa per. Fion3 that day it began a new and prosperous career. It went uu, sailing smoothly with the wind, through the -ad ministration of Madison and ,:llonroc; but with the break-up of the old Republican party in 1824 it took a new departure in adhering to the fortunes of Henry Clay. From this diversion it became the central national organ and oracle of the old Whig party, a trenchant party leader on the hank question, the tariff, internal improve ments, &c., fighting Jackson and his henchinen and his democratic successors with marked ability down to the dissolu tion of the Whig party in 1852. Then, thrown adrift upon the waves, it began to fail. Nay, it began to fail with the estab lishment of the , independent newspaper press; but its mission ended with the Whig party. Through all this period, exceeding a half a century, the intelkgencer was the recipient of millions of public money, under the old system of a party dispensa tion of the government printing from both houses of Congress and the Executive De partments. The paper had a large sub scription list throughout the United States; but under the old credit system it had, as we have been told, upon its books at one time nearly half a million of unpaid sub scriptions for papers served, and probably not one-fifth of this outstanding sum was ever collected. The profits of the estab lishment were from the government sops and subsidies so liberally lavished upon it as a party organ. From these subsidies Gales and Seaton received a mint of money; but in their free and generous style of living and thoughtless wastefulness they contrived to'"spend•it all as fast as it came in, and to be in debt besides all , the time. This'was the inheritance of Mr. Coyle and Company, but under the benign ad ministration of Andy Johnson, with its sops and subsidies, they still kept the pa per afloat after the old fashion. From the withdrawal of these sops and subsidies, under the new administration, the paper has died. It was in its day, under Gales and Seaton, a model newspaper dignity and decorum, even in the most exciting and embittered party contests; but the moral which it teaches is that of a highly respectable, generous and reckless spend thrift who dies only after having exhaust ed the patience and the pockets of his friends.—N. WE see no reason why the Grand Army should not make a formal claim upon the government for a large share of the offi ces, and its demands be received with favor, notwithstanding the howl which is raised against such demands by certain party leaders of both parties. The Grand Army has such a right, a right which cannot be disputed orzainsaid, and if it, as a body of men, cannot be favored in preference to politicians then we say cruci fy the politicians as soon as the next war breaks out. Duiu the past thirtyfive years, no less than fifty-five daily papers have been started in the city of New York, lived for a short time, and then died for want of adequate - support—after having sunk mil lions of dollars. And many of them tried the experiment at a time when it did not cost a tithe of the money to carry on a daily paper which it costa at the present time.
