The Rights of the Press. An outrage was committed, on Chestnut street, ou Saturday, which calls for the severest punishment of the offender and the sternest denunciation of the spirit which.prompted it. Mr. Fortescue, a well-known and highly respected member of the press, while pass ingalong the street„on Saturday afternoon, was suddenly assaulted by a man who fig ured prominently in connection with the election, frauds last fall, commonly known as "Piggy Divine." Without warning or provocation, Divine struck Mr. Furtescue several blows before that gentleman could defend himself. A. police officer arrived on the ground in time to arrest Mr. For tescue, and it was with some difficulty that be was made to understand that the as sailant, and not the assailed, was the proper person for him to arrest. Divine has been bound over to answer at the next term of Court, where we pre sume the Haggerty tactics will be resorted to, to secure acquittal. But if this par ticular sort of outrage is to pass uncon demned and unpunished, we must bid farewell to law and order and comma de cency in this community, and fall back from the resort to courts and judges and juries to the quick rough justice, of the Vigilance Committee. 31 . r. Fortescue, in the discharge of his proper duty, may or may not have criticized the doings of this man Divine or his friends. The right to pass such criticism cannot be surrendered by any moderately independent journalist. It is one of the greatest safeguards which this country possesses, and it will be the death-kneel of our republican is zn,wh e never it is proclaimed that the public press shall not expose abuse, and denounce crime and corruption, and criticize the acts and omis sions of public men, without its agents and representatives being exposed to such brutal personal attacks as that referred to above It is the bounden duty of every decent and respectable community to support every decent and respectable newspaper in its bold and honest criticisms of wrong and wrong-doers. It will be sorry day for the people of this country when its press is muzzled and cowed into silence by the threats and brutality of those who fear the exposure of their evil deeds.—Phila. Bulletin. Passion for Fine Homes. One of the most favorable signs of the times, is the love of excessive display in the construction and fitting up of our homes. Within a few years the change in this respect has been striking. Two generations ago, men in good circumstan ces, were content with substantial houses, and while they consulted the principles of good taste in the architectural finish 'and in the furniture of their homes they knew nothing of that fondness for show, which has now become so general. Even men of wealth were not formerly prone to a lavish exhibition of their means in gaudy structures and ornamental finery. They built elegant homes, but it was elegance for use, not for pompous nothingness. It is not so now. The taste for extrav agance show, which is extending over the whole country, takes a very special plea sure in advertising its vanity in the shape of fine homes. The immense outlay, di rected by a love of ostentation, and in some instances by a barbaric delight in the veriest tinsel, builds a house as farremoved as possible from the idea of a home. Nothing about it indicates the presence of domestic love. Progress of the Women. The servant girls of Ghent, in Belgium are in a state of revolt, because, by the in troduction of a new system of drainage, they are deprived of their immemorial perquisite—the refuse of the houses. The women of Hungary are demanding the restoration of the right of suffrage, which widows and spinsters who were landowners enjoyed up to 184 S. The Women's Ad vocated Chicago, edited by Mrs Livermore, denounces the members of the , Equal Rights Association for snubbing Frederick Douglass, S. S. Foster, C. C. Burleigh, and tells them that their course has seri ously impaired the usefulness of their or ganization. The New York Sorosis is dis cussing the expediency of establishing foundling, hospitals, and has refused to admit to membership a male applicant, R. B. Roosevelt. In short, the activity everywhere eahtbited in one form or another, by those who are envious that women shall be " emancipated," prove that if sho does not get her " rights," the reason will not lie in her own slothfulness. Editorial Courtesy. Southern journalists sometimes adopt a style of writing which has the merit of candor if not of studied courtesy. Titus the Raleigh (N. J.) Standard observes : " The Milton Chronicle says the hangman is waiting at our door. This is the first katitpation wo have had that the editor of that paper had called upon us." 34Ran mud-atones come from usually we don't know, but one nuw in the pos leaskirl. of Major ~.Tatues B. Lockhart, of .4)4 e411,_ Alabama, 111 '4011e Which he took out of the 'stimuli of a:deer-in 1846. It is dark brown; porOus and egg shaped; is inohes long and one inch thick, and resembles a calculus. 1 . . 1 ANDREW JOHNSON began to'ia m counterfeiters on the day of President Lincoln's funeral and , continued until that of President - Grant's inauguration.
