Saturday, _February 6, 1869. - .a?ALL advertising will be considered CASH . , mid collectable at, any time utter Hie tint Insertion, Kerosene Oil—When it is Sure. C,ial nit, says the Cincinnati Times, is the natural product of the slow distillation of coal at low temperatures. When coal oil i. distilled it gives off different substances as the heat is increased. The most vo latile coming off with least he:at is benzoic, or, as it is usually called, benzine, then naptha the ordinary coal oils, then lubri eating or heavy oils, with a tarry residum. or these, the most volatile are those that are explosive. Coal nil as it comes from the well contains all of these different substances. Refining it should take from it the volatile.elements and the heavy lu bricating nil , . If a barrel of kerosene contains benzine, the latter may evaporate so much that an explosion may occur from miming near the barrel with a lighted candle. The object of unscrupulous deal ers is to put heavy and volatile oils togeth er, as the volatile oil is only saleable for particular uses. Sometimes dealers affect to make oils safe trout explosion by putting borax, alum, potash, camphor or other substan ces into them—all of which is humbug. If coal oil vaporizes, that is, gives off benzine or napthaine vapor at, a less heat than 110 degrees Fahrenheit, it is explo sive and dangerous. [f a lighted match will set fire to a little of the oil in a saucer the oil is explosive and dan serous. No other' test than these are reliable. So vo latile and combustible is benzine, that when a current of hydrogen gas is passed through the fluid, or through a sponge moistened with it, the gas will burn with an intasely white heat. Atmospheric air, also charged with benzine vapor, burns with a smoky flume and 'bright light. Benzine mixes freely with alchohol, and the compound so formed is sometimes burned in lamps. Benzine increases the illuminating power of bad gas. Dsit.A.w.utti has three whipping posts i and only one railroad—the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore and its branch. Instead of abolishing the former, it now proposes to repeal the charter of the let ter, and by seperatiug the State from the rest of the world, wake the Delawareans an isolated and peculiar people. The next thing in order will be to abolish the churches, the few free schools and the printing presses ; when this is accomplish ed, and the whipping posts are reinforced with a supply of thumb-screws, racks and other interesting instruments of tortute, Delawareans will be so nearly barbaric that we shall expect to hear of them wearing war paint instead of clothes, and expending their spare time in scalping each other. Delaware certainly needs re constructing badly. Frail Patents. Mr. Ketchum is trying to get a law passed protecting the uicevtors of new varieties of fruits and vegetables. Beau tiful and just in theory, but, we fear, im possible in practice. It is char enough that he who by science and skill, time and labor, gives the world a neW and superior strawberry or potato, is as much. entitled to letters patent for it as he who invents a sewing machine—if it would do him any good. But unless a law prohibiting any body but the patentee from growing the new fruit were passed, we do not see how he could be benefited by it, and even then he would have that vast market cut off which arises from the demand of those who buy in order to plant and raise. Good Example. A gentleman connected with one of the largest business firms in St. Louis recently called at a newspaper office, and left a $6OO advertisement. He said that he had dreamed the night before that he had done so, and he felt that he ought to follow out the suggestion of his dream. It was a sensible spirit that inspired that dream. We would like to see it sitting upon the eye lids of some Columbia business men who do not advertise in the SPY. A. FIRE broke out iu a tenement home, in New York, early last Thursdny mo:n ing. On the third floor lived a man with his wife and five children. fie first res cued his wire, then returned :and carried down, through the smoke, two of the children. He attempted to go back the second time but was overcome by the smoke. He was afterwards found insensi loie, and-the three'ehildren peri4ted. TIEE Louisville Centric? .1. - itritul says "It has been demonstrated by actual ex periment in several Southern States, that free ucgroes and hogs can't live in the same neighborhood." The poor whites of the south are not troubled in that way. They can not only live in the saute neigh borhood with hugs, but have been known to grant to those quadrupeds free access to their.houses. TEE work on the artisian well at St. Louis i:; approaching its close, and a fet:• weeks will determine whether the under taking is to prove a success or an expen sive failure.
