As each generation mourns the degen erate times it has fallen upon, and sights for the good old days of their grand fathers, so each new fashion is pronounced more ridiculous than its: predecessor; but if we look through the old records and cuts of the glorious l•ygone days, we will find that dame liishiun was just as ridicu lous in all ages as she knew how to be,and that her followers were just as abject slaves three centuries ago as now. A picture before us, says a contemporary, represents a fashionable English belle of 1640, who has her face dotted over with black patches stuck on with guin, and lepresenting various objects, this fashion was then borrowed from the Roman dames of the last days of the Empire. One patch represents a coach and four, stuck un just above the right eye. On either cheek the form of a crescent and a large star appears, while the chin is set off by a round black patch representing alozenge. It seems these ornaments were adopted by male fops as well as female. Thecus tom prevailed for a long time One writer of the time says: "If itbe a lover's part, you act. take a black spot or• tiro; 'twill make your face more loving, and appear more gracious in your mistress' eyes." This absurd custom was said to have originated in attempting to imitate a mole which Venus is represented to have displayed on her face. The account says: "Some fill their visage full of them, and of all mannor of shapes." One of the fond husbands of that time boasts of the beauty of his wife's appearance when he first gave her leave (they would not ask it now) to wear a black patch, and adds "with three patches, she is farhaudsomer than the Prince Qs Henrietta " In times of political excitement, the patches were made to represent the emblems of the favorite party. The mania raged furiously in England in 1754, and for several yeare, thereafter, and for a lady to appear with out a patched face, was to be pointed at as our style. While that was less dan gerous tohealth, it was quite as ridiculous as the Grecian bend. We allude to it to show that fashion and folly was just as absurd centuries ago, as now, notwith standing tic constant reference to the virtues and the good sense of past gener ations. MR.
