Tuesday last. Some fifty or sixty car loads were dumped, and the arrangements found to work admirably. Several boats have already received cargoes of coal from this great structure; and numerous others are awaiting a supply. Go Aso ScE THENI.—Some of the finest refrigerators and'-water coolers that we have yet seen, are on exhibition at: the store of Hiram 'Wilson, curlier of second and Locust streets, Columbia. Persons in want of.anything in this line should call and see them. Flo has also 'a splendid as sortment of housekeeping goods; and he sells them at cheaper rates than at city re tail prices. BERKELEY HALL.—No one should fail to read our new original story—BERICELEr HALL. It is by the same author as 't The Ashley's," and no story ever published in the Spy, met with such popularity. We think " Berkeley Hall" will take equally as well, if not better. From the start it deals in mystery and exciting events; the graphic descriptions of which are certain to arouse the interest of every reader of this truly interesting story. MOWING AND REAPING MACnINE.— Wood's Mowing and Reaping Machines drew the first premium at the great Paris Exposition, besides four first prizes of sil ver medals at home. They aro extensively used in Pennsylvania, and all who have them acknowledge their superiority over all similar machines now in use. Mr. H. H. Heise is the agent for the sale of these machines, ono of which is now on exhibi tion at his residence, N 0.230 Locust street, Columbia. Call on him and examine, it, and get prices, Ste. A NOTREit RAHatOAD.--,-The West Chester -Republican says, tho people of Wilmington are discusing tho feasibility - as well as the , importance of constructing it railroad from that city to Oxford, Chester county, and from thence to Hanover Junc tion, York. County, with a view to connect with the west by way of Balthnoro and Ohio and Connelsville Railroads. The Board of 'Prtide of that city, have passed resolutions to investigate the merits of a road to Oxtbrd as a means of developing local trade, and with the view to its con tinuance further west, if circumstances should warrant. RIVER ITEM'S.— Therehas been a large arrival of canal boats during the week, and our river front presents a busy scene. The fishing season has opened most favorably, And our fishermen are reaping a harvest of the "finny tribe."—The ferry boat,-"Callie,7 under command of Capt; Et Black, is doing a flourishing business ; the trips are made with great'raffidity and lirouiptuess. The river is lined with rafts, along shore; but few have arrived the present week, owing to the, low :stage .of tlm“ water. A great qUantity of lumber is at the head waters, 'and the owners are awaiting a freshet; to " draw, out.". Last, but not least, we are glad to state that the work on the bridge is going on finely. GARDEN ,FLOWER.IS. 7 --Many persons are now engaged in arranging their flower gardens. A pretty flower garden of your own is preferable to the public gardens in existence. It is an ever present enjoy ment to which you can turn at any time, or leisure; one that children as well a 9 adults enjoy. Then cultivate plants and rear flowers and (with a wife,) you may have a bit of Paradise on earth after all. We would here state to our citizens that all who wish to replenish their stock of flowers and plants, should call on Mr. S. H. Purple, at the Columbia. Nursery. Ho has a splendid stock on hand and many of them are entirely new in this region. COUNTRY PAPERS.—Those of our ex change papers which give attention to local matters, have always been looked into with interest; and we shall miss their familiar greeting, as will also " the folks at home," to which many of them were carried. Pennsylvania is now dotted - over-. with cities and towns, very many ofthe counties being distinguished for mining operations and industrial works. In 'these counties, as indeed in nearly all the ,counties in the State, the local papers are generally man aged with industry, tact and intelligence, some of.them with marked ability. We love the country, and towns from which one can look out into a landscape in sum mer -robes, the hill-tops- bonnetted, with shady groves, and the fields gay and glad with grains and grasses ; where the brooks have the voices of little children, innocent and playful, and the azure sky is radiant in light which sheds a glow of glory upon the, earth.^FMV*ON—Plnladelphia Mining Register- • WIFE BEATERS.—WC notice in the Philadelphia Evening Herald, a statement that no 'less than three scamps were ar rested for beating their wives. We are rejoiced to say that since the organization of an "anti-wife beating society" in Co lumbia, no man bore has been brute enough to be guilty of anything of that sort. It may be -well for such _fellows to know that a strict watch is kept by some of our best citizens, and if any man eari c he proven guilty of such an offense, lie will be certainly "tucked up," exposed and punish ed, not by a court,.but by a new sort of Ku- Klux Klan. that have secretly resolved that no such abuse'shall go unpunished. To have their names published in the newspapers, their places . of business shunned by all good men, and to; be ridden-on a • rail or driven'irom toWn, will not lasvery healthy for them. ,In a short time we . may give a detailed account of this organization, and all wife-beaters, if there be any, will be astonished that they have not been dealt with according to the rules of the Society. UNCLAIMED LETTERS.—List of letters remaining unclaimed, in the Columbia Post Office, up to this date. Persons calling for these letters will please mention that they are advertised in the "Si':"r Ladies' List.—Caroline Raugher, Rachel Cu bbert, Susan Kline, Rachel Killable, Elizabeth McCue, Sarah Sliher, Mary Torbit, S. F. Talley, Mollie Wilson. Gentlemen's List.—Frank M. Cole, Sam'l Grock, Jacob Hogentogler, 'Adam Hippie, E. Hunter. Aaron 'Rise; •Dr. Kapp, P. B Martin, Peter Notes, George Wieger, F. A. Woodbridge, J. H. Witmer. , SHABBY .Rocors.—Every .one knows bow shabby a room looks with worn-out, smoky, greasy or ill-shaped paper upon the walls of a parlor or sitting room. All per sons who have such rooms should send for W. H. Patton, at once; lie can doctor them. Ho is the most expert paper banger we know of—a genius in his profession. Or ders may be left at No. 45 North Front street; at Fondersmith's store; at the office of Zulius L. Shuman, Washington borough, or at the SPY office. HANDSOME BUGGY.—Christian Myers has just finished, at his steam coach works on Second street, Columbia, a . very neat and handsome buggy for Messrs. Sprenger S. Weldler, of this place. It is new in style, perfect in finish and design, and is perhaps the best light wagon that has lately been turned out in this part of the country. Mr: Myers' build of wagons are second to no other make, as his customers can testify. PERSONAL, &c.—Mr. S. A. Vache, of this place; for some time past a baggage master ou the Pennsylvania Railroad, has resigned that position, owing to ill health, and accepted a situation not so -laborious, that 01 superintendent of a division'for the painting of stations, engine houses, water tanks, watch houses, tool houses, &c., on the remelt R..R., * including that portion of the road between Harrisburg and Coates ville.' He'. commenced his duties on Monday last. All the Company's frame buildings along their route are to be paint ed a different color—light and dark drab, with window sashes imitation walnut. Sam'l Shoch, appropriated the sum of $5OO for the purpose of procuring a library for the use of our public schools, with the proviso that the School Board appropriate • $5O per annum. to the fund, untill a library be pro cured. At the last meeting of the School Board the project of purchasing a library was taken into consideration. We would suggest that our citizens contribute to the fund, and purchase a library. There are now some eight hundred dollars of a fund on hand. A. special meeting of.the School Board will be held on Monday evening next; for the purpose of taking into con sideration the purchasing of a library. MAY lIOPL—The members of the Vigilant Fire Company intend to open the pic-nie season with a grand hop, in Heise's woods, on Saturday, the 30th inst. Prep arations are already being made. The managers are "a jolly set of boys," and know bow to get up an entertainment. We bespeak for all who favor them with their presence, an abundance of fun, and un equivalent 'for their money. Patronize the boys, everybody, whether you attend or nit. They are striving to raise funds fix• the purchase of a steamer. Isn't that sufficient to merit your patronage? A good citizen will answer, yea ! Excursion tickets will be issued by the R. it C. Rail road Company. ,OFFICERs EnECTED.—The officers of. INGHAM'S CALIFORNIA S3IUT MA cutNE AND W.TIE.A.T CLEANER.—This pat ent combined smut machine has been in use at the mills of George Bogle and Ephraim Hershey, Columbia, for the past seven years. They are also" used in other places throughout the county, and all who use them prefer this machine to any other yet introduced. It makes no dirt, or dust around the machine, or in the mill. It cleans the wheat properly; it also cleans tho offal tit for feed or grinding, and will remove in a perfect manner, small nails or other hard substances. These machines are manufactured and sold by Mr. 11. H. Heise, No. 230 Locust street, Columbia. Persons in want of them should call or ad dress as above. CEIANGE OF MARKET OPENINO.-013 Wednesday last, our markets, according to announcement, were opened at five o'clock, instead of nine o'clock, during the winter. The market _was very " slim," the change not being generally known. Everything brought good prices. Butter holds its own at fifty cents per pound. Potatoes cost more now than they ,ever did, Since the pomme de terre was first introduced to the people. The price per bushel, retail, is from $2 to $2.50. Shad are plenty, and of a better flavor. The fisheries are in full operation, and the "catch" is very satisfac tory; the prices range from GO to SO Cents per pair. A. vast multitude of other fish, perch, suckers, mullets, and the like, the perquisite of the fishermen, are plenty and sell fora mere trifle. About two weeks more, perhaps later, there will be seen in our markets early radishes, and various vegetables that belong ,to . the reign of summer. • ' ' MOUNT BETUEt. CEMETERY ASSOCIA TION.—At the last meeting of the Mt. Bethel Cemetery Association, held on Saturday evening last, a - committee for each ward of the Borough was appointee to solicit from our citizens, and all others interested, subscriptions to tho stock of said Associa tion. The Committees are distributed as follows: Ist Ward—Hiram Wilson, J. W. Ste.acy. 2d Ward—B. Hershey, J. G. Bess. dd Ward—Wm. Patton nod A. Brener, Jr. They will call upon nil our citizens in a few days, to give them a chalice to subscribe to this enterprise, and we think there are but few who will refuse. This Association is started for a noble and glorious purpose, and will' evidently wipe out a disgrace long felt in the community, by not having a well cured for burialplace. , - The first business of the Association will be to build a house upon the •grounds, and put ' some responsible person in charge. They are already planting trees and making other improvements. Twenty per cent. of the price of all lots sold will be set apart for the purpose of a perpetual fund for keeping the• Cemetery in order. Let our citizens subscribe when the Committee calls upon them, as another oportunity may not be offered. ExconsioNs.--We bear of several excursions to be made from this place, to Litix Springs and elsewhere, during tho summer. The contested election case between James Lynch and Daniel Balmer, Sr., for Justice of the Peace of Elizabethtown, who were tie, was heard by the Court on Satur day. A large number of witnesses were called to prove illegal voting by two voters. The evidence was not suliently conclu sive to which person the ballots were cast for for Justice, and the Court dismissed the case. A new election wilt probably:be held. POTATOES —The high price of potatoes, which have become so important an article of : food, should. induce farmers to plant largely Of them' the' present season.' The potato rat is evidently the great cause of their scarcity. It is important therefore, that farmers should guard against it. This can be done by the proper application of lime. A writer in the Dauphin Register says that he applied lime to his potato crop thoroughly last year, and lost none by the rot, while his neighbors all around him lost heavily. He applied limein the hills and rows before dropping the potatoes, at the rate of a large double-handful to each hill, and thinks that if more were used it would do no injury. Ho thinks that potatoes should be planted deep, and cultivated without being billed. If any one doubts this experience, let him try the experiment for himself. P. 31. 5.03 P. 31. .S:3O A. M rruE LATE CITY ELECTION.—At the election for municip d officers in this city, held on Friday, 2,893 votes were polled for auditor, which is an increase of lit votes over the number cast for Mayor last, year. Mr. Slaymaker's majority is 339, being 96 less than that received by the same gentle man for the same office, at the election last year, and 172 less than that received by Mayor Sanderson at the same election. The next board of councilmen will be a tie on joint ballot, classing Messrs. Long and Rutledge—elected on an Independent ticket—with the Democrats. Of the new members in the Common branch, fifteen are Republicans and twelve Democrats. Last year there were twenty-one Demo crats and six Republicans in the Common branch. At the election lu§t week, the Re publican Judges in six wards, were elected. Last year they had only four or the nine chosen.—Lancaster Express. SCANDAL.—AIment every city, town and hamlet in the universe has unsung its inhabitants evil disposed persons who are [ always ready, and scorn to make it a busi ness to pick up idle and scandalous stories and rumors about their neighbors, and whether they are true or not, peddle them about the neighborhood. We know :401130 of this class in Columbia. They are vipers in the community,—they would coil around happiness and forever destroy it. They area burning disgrace to society, and svu intend to give the names of smite of them. They will wear out in one week, shoe leather enough to lust an ordinary person six months, in going from house to house and repeating what they have heard Mrs. Squiggles is said to fade been guilty of doing, or that Mr. Swallowtail, who, by the way, Is a deacon in the—church, and a married man at that, was seen on such and such a day in such amid such a place to hand Miss Takeall mi package, which they have good reason for believing contained either something' or nothing. About to wn'they go; their tongue wagging at lightning speed, as if they wore fearful that the news ,would- not be made public. These " shrews" don't seem to realize the fact that those they are talking about have feelings that are capable of being lmrt, and that life hopes have been blasted and even hearts broken in more instances than one, through the means of an idle rumor, or in plainer words a bare faced lie. We know of cases, which have occurred to our per sonal knowledge were fond hopes have been blighted, and men and women have been sent headlong on the road to destruc tion through these same means. If these gossiping lechurs would only reflect a mo ment on the evil they are doing, and that the persons they are talking about might possibly be innocent of any guilty.action, they would not allow their tongues to run away with their brains. The right way to do, instead of being in such haste to catch up any of this cheap scandal and reporting it to others is to— "Speak: lightly of our neighbor's faults, Forgetting not our own ; Humanity is frail at least, If lett, by Heaven, alone." LIFE DROPS.—The Life Drops as man ufitetured by Geo. S. Robotharn, Lancaster, Pa., are gaining a reputation all over the country for their prompt and permanent cures ilrevery case where tried.
