HANDSOME STEEL EN(IItAVINOS.—A cultivation, of the taste for the Fine Arts has become a part of our educational system, and pictures are now regarded as indispensable household ornaments. This is especially true in regard to Scriptural Works, as these are at once both elevating and purifying in their influences upon society. Mr. Levi Meily is now canvassing this place for two of the most superb pro ductions of that master artist, Sartain—ono from Eastlakes great painting, of " Christ Blessing Little Children" and the other from Dobson's famous painting of " Bethle hem" or " Christ in the Manger," These two steel engravings are match pictures, and are the finest and best of Sartain's many superior works of art, and the sub jects are such as' to make theca worthy a place on the wall - of any family parlor. .TheY are perpetual lessons speaking to the heart through the delighted eye, and as such should be purchased and prized by every :parent. We. are especially pleased with the "Bethlehem,.' which is a new engraving and a magnificent artistic or nament. agent has also at his dis-, posal two other large and splendid en gravings, executed by the same distin guished artist, _ Sartain ; one of which is entitled " Christ Rejected," from a colossal and gorgeous painting of the celebrated Benjamin West—and the other, "Christ Stilling the Tempest," from a large and acperb painting of Hamiliton, the greatest marine artist living. The Agent will call upon our citizens and exhibit these works. eA TPMELY APPEAL.—We would here remind all who areindebted to this office, either for subscription, job , work or advertising, that now is the time to pay :up the several amounts duo. We have , sent out bills to nearly all who are in arrears for subscription, -and we hope that a prompt response will be 'made in every case. Will you'd° it? Do not put it oft and say it can be done any time; but do "it at once, while you think of it. 'Though individually small, these sums form a large amount in the aggregate; and as continual outlay is necessary in-the publishing of a newspaper,*the punt:tont payment of these claims become a matter of imperative ne cessity. - • - , All persons who do ,not pay their sub scription within the year, lifty-cents will be added in every case.,' . . • Those persons who have not found it con venient to pay the printer anything, .dur: ing the last two or three years—and they are notfew in number—are hereby notified that' unless their indebtedness to this office is not paid up by the first of :May, 1868, they will be mulcted in costs. We therefore ask you,, in all candor and kindness, to come for Ward and settle your accounts at once ; so as to enable us to square our indebtedness with our creditors. ' PANTALOONS: , -:Our merchant tailors inform us, that "tights" will be all the go" this season. On the style, an exehange comments thusly: Wo always had an idea that men went on their - muscle, but the tights disclose the sad fact that "there's nothing in 'them," and that our young men, and more especially the fAsb ionable portion of them, are terribly demoralized. They should wear "false calves," or something of that kind. Such diminutive, minute, insignificant, littlo spindleshanks - aS they sport, up and down our streets, is truly alarming, and if the fashion should increase, our high Constable will have his time fully occupied in arrest ing them for having no visible moans of support. How they get the tarnal things on is a wonder to us. They can't put them on over their heads, - its ladies put on their hoops, that's certain ; and how they manage to get, such huge pedals through such nar row, pipesteunknil nunatronieS; is surpris ing. We have often had occasions to speak of ladies' fashions, but we cannot now call to mind any that are as ridiculous as these abominttbk, tights, unless it be Liam of tight lacing., 'Whoever started this absurd fashion should be made to wear them all his life time. The selections were admirable, and the manner in which they were rendered gave evidence that the punils were drilled by tho'so who.wero perfect masters of such undertakings. Yet, we know not whether to commend or censure the conductors r and ,participants; to 'commend them for the ability and tact they possess in supplying a growing public demand for VoCal culture and execution, or to' censure them for not haiing done so long since ; as we know they have frequently been solicited to do. Messrs. Newpber and Unsold have, in thb estimation of allpresent, on last Tuesday evening, shown them selves. just the men to have charge of the musical education of all who wish to learn the noblest of arts, and the highest of accomplishments. But we need say no more of the qualifications of these gentlemen, as they are sufficiently established i lithe confidence of the citizens of Columbia, to give the assurance that when they are connected, with any musical entertainment, it is all the warrant desir able for success. ,We cannot, however, re frain from giving the names of the pupils who deported themselves so admirably on this occasion, adding not only another mark of efficiency to the well-merited re putation of our Union School, but also crowning themselves, individually, with laurels that would well become much older beads than theirs, and as ,to their personal appearance on the stage, it was oven more than charming. " I The following are the names of the parti cipants : MisseS Mira G. Shuman, -Lillie Hinton, Sarah A. Reid, Annie Mifflin, Lottia A. Hook, Mary S. Shuman, Emily Williams, Laura Williams, Mary Hysinger, Mazie Welsh, Lirra Fraley, Jennie-Knipe, Christie, Gourley, Katie McCauley, Annie Carter, Lillie 'Welsh, Emma Given, Mary E. Myers, Mary D. Schroeder, Katie W. Simpson, Aimee Fraley, Ettie Jordan, Masters Harry Lichty, John Given, Rich ard Sehmied, Emmett Welsh. We will not make particular mention of any individual piece, as the performance from beginning to end was unexceptionable; though some pieces evidently affected the audience more favorable then others, owing to the sentiment and style of the music. We know it will be gratifying to all that we announce another concert to be given by the pupils of the school, in the Public School Hall, on Friday evening, May Ist, when the programme, we understand, will. be entirely new, and we again urge all who love music, and have any interest in home.talent to be sure to attend.
