O'er Graves of the Loved Onea Plant Beautiful Flowers. O'er graves of the loved ones plant beautiful flowers ; 'Tis the germ of affection to sweeten life's hours ; With roses and-lilies deck each little mound, At the head of the dear ones spread violets round; - Sweetest flow'rs of remembrance will com fort and cheer, And lead us in thought to those we hold dear ; " Forget me not ever," each grave seems to sa, " Forget y not the lov'd ones who have passed away." auonus: Beautiful flowers! sweet-scented flowers! O'er graves of the lov'd ones plant beauti ful flowers ; Graves of the lov'd ones, dear sacred spot ! Never, oh, never, can they be forgot. Beautiful dowers ! sweet-scented flowers ! What if the chill Winter its drapery shed And with mantle of snow-flakes should cover each bed ; Still thinking and dreaming of those happy sours When we planted the roses and. cared for the flowers, Till the spring -time and summer seem ever so near ; And in the bright future we almost hear The voices of dear ones as sweetly they say : "The flowers you have planted, they live every day." Cnonus : Eire Eaters. Froni time immemorial we have heard and road of fire-eaters. Before the days of christianit3r and since, it, was .quito com mon as a pagan rite, audis still a part, of the religion of the Chinese and Japanese—wo mean those of them, of course, who have not been converted to the true faith. With the Cintoos of Japan it is the same as the sacrament, with the exception that instead of the bread and wine they use live coals and a cup of cold water. It is said to fur nish to these pagans a rare relish and is en joyed by them exceedingly. It is a savory dish and they do not feel comfortable with out it. A Cintoo without, his regular meal of live coals, is a miserable creature. It is a strange and mysterious thing, this mat ter of fire-eating, and as we look upon the operation, we, in common with every other person, wonder bow it is done. With the pagans it is not, deception. It is a real gen uine fact. They chow coals of lire and swallow them after they -are chewed, and thus mak6s meal of them. There can be no mistake in the reality of the practice. During the visit of the Japanese troupe to our borough, a short time ago, we visited their rooms at tho National House, and were eye witness to the operation of fire eating. A bundle of pine sticks wore ob tained and put into the fire until they had, become live coals, when they were picked out and oaten; one by one, in our presence. A number of other persons, both ladies and gentlemen, witnessed it -and were, equally astonished. • :The operation occupied about half an hour. This would seem to seine persons a singular meal, but it was never theless a reality, and as it diclnot burn the mouth 'of the strange, being who indulged in it; itpassed oil cheerfully and seemed to furnish thin nn iitrinite amount or eati;arac tion., ' There are some-other Singular habits which these Japanese have, a few of which we will mention.' They do not, and will not, drink a cup of tea,. without first put ting a teaspoonful of salt in it. This is done for thepurpose of driving the cavil out of it. This is also a part of their religion. They worship idols and do not believe in the God of the Bible. One of these was shown us, in the sleeping chamber of the fire-eaters. It consisted of a long, narrow strip of, parchment, suspended upon 'the wall and in the centre of which was a sin gular lookingAgure holding in its hand a sceptre. The balance of the parchment was covered with hieroglyphics. Immedi ately under it is placed a small box, con— , twining an image, - which is intended to rep resent the deVil. - The worshiper sits in the front of these, and while he offers up his devotions to the'figure upon' the parch- Ment, endeavors to pacify the devil by presents of apples, sweetmeats and an oc casional glass of Avhisky. It is a singular freak of pagan idolatry and is rarely seen in a christian country. ' Those Japanese have a remarkable rever ence and respect for the laws and customs of their country, and as'these aro unusually strict in their exactions, they may be said to bo the most honest people in the world. Their word once passed is never broken, and their observance of the duties of a con tract or obligation, amounts almost to the sublime. Plighted faith, or aproinise dis regarded, is entirely unknown amongst them. This extreme honesty and faithful - _Hess in the observance of their duties and promises, - does not arise from the fact that they.are morally better than other nations, but from a knowledge that they will suffer the severest penalties if they violate them. This Japanese troupe which' visited our borough a short time ago, aro the best per formers we ever saw. B orne of their feats are truly astonishing, and wherever they go ',they, are greeted with overflowing IMuses. They, however, introduce none-of their pagan rites in theirpublic exhibitions.
