No town in this part of the country offers better facilities than _Columbia for the purchase of dry goods, groceries, books, toys, stationery, clothing,ct.c. The advertising columns of the Soy furnish an excellent index as to where the best goods are to he found. Storekeepers who understand their own in terests take care not to allow their light to be hid under a non-advertising bushel, and they shrewdly avail themselves of the best newspaper medium of letting the public know what they have to sell. ens piagished by T. . Robley Dunglison, Wein Forney, and Levi Kauffman are its editors, publish ers, and proprietors. It is decidedly the best looking daily amongst our exchanges, and what makes it bettor looking than the most of journals, it is, in typographical ap pearance, similar to the Srr. Its editors have all had experience in journalism, and are amply qualified to cater to the tastes of the reading public. It unfurls the banner 'of straight-out Republicanism, and its edi torial columns show ability, meaning and power. The State Guard is already well patronized, and with its present editorial force it cannot help but take rank as ono of tho host _newspapers in the Common wealth. - W. G. DKC ra K IS P itrans.—Th e dry goods market is down, and many articles are about as low; a, before the war; indeed some kinds orgoods are lower. The pork market is also depressed; hogs are abundant, in the West, mid market dull in expects timt a a greater fall. Now we want a hell in bread—zt tall that ought to have come long ago, and then our bread and bacon secure, we cart face the winter with some courage. The farmers have been so long drawing whatever they choose to demand front eausunters, that they naturally object to going back to old prices. And yet the thing is as long as it is bread. They have to pay enough for their cloths, groceries and other commodities to equalize the excess of their apparent gains. They have to feed the mechanics and arti zans who supply theta, and just so long as they charge fifty per cent. extra for their bread and bacon, they will find it com ing back to thorn in the thousand and one articles they are obliged to purchase. The tendencies are all towardS a reduction of prices, and the sooner the farmers learn to practice upon it, the better it will be all around: OURISTNIAS GIFTS .—" Christmas it. comiUg" and \;'d expect to get a present of some kind. Why P.—Because some kind friends have always remembered the hap less printer, in the midstof their pleasures and festivities, during the Christmas holi days. The practice of making presents on Christmas is said to have originated in the example of the wise men 'of tlie•East,•who brought their offerings to the manger at Tiethlehent, and laid them at the feet of the Infant Savior. , Since then Christmas gifts have been nni'verstil throughout Christen dom, . and, 'many persons feel that they have net properly discharged their duty • unless they bestow something among friends and fitvorites. Those who •can af ford it usually do, and this holiday never passes around without an interchange of tokens of good feeling and kindness in al most every neighborhood. Be the gift over so small, said intrinsically, ever so value ! ! less, it is esteemed 11.4 a special favor. WITH A HAPPY TER 311NATION.—Last week, two prominent and influential business men of Columbia, got into a conversation on the comparative merits of their babies; each one saying that he had the best baby, and the conver sation waxed Ware on • this point. The matter was finally loft to three disinterest ed persons, and the decision was to be given at an oyster supper ; the party whom the committee decided against,' paying for the same. It is well enough to state here that one was a male child and the other a female. The babies were each duly examined by the Committee. Their finely drawn features, their capacity for milk and Winslow's syrup, their good looks, weights, health, I u ngs, goodn ess and gentle qualities, and the number of sleepless nights they had caused their fathers—all these were inquired into and taken into consideration by the Com mittee chosen for the purpose—one of them a gray haired veteran, who had reared and dangled on his knees xnany-a-baby,—de dared that he was a good judge and rather liked his mission. After all this had been gone through with, nothing was now left, but to partake of the supper, which was prepared by 71127243 host. Black, of the Wash ington House, on Monday evening last; and such a supper—oysters in every con ceivable style, with all the necessary ac companiments. After full justice had been done to the elegant banquet, the Commit tee made the following report: We, the undersigned, having been appointed to CX:Unino and report on the first fruit, of Mr. - and wife, and the last fruit of Mr.-and wife, would respectfully report that after exam ining the babies of the respective parties, the Committee are of the unanimous opinion that Mr. - and wife have the finest male and that Mr.-and wife have the finest female child. The Committee are therefore of the opin ion that:Messrs. - and - shall bear an equal proportion of the expenses of this great banquet, &c. &T.. as both parties have done ad mirably, and , the Committee hope that they will continue their efforts, and carry out the Scrip tural injunction, to increase and multiply. SIGNED IVY COMMITTEE. The report was received with great favor and applause by all. Speeches were then made by the fathers of the good and best babies, and over sparkling champagne the health, long life and prosperity of these babies were drank, with the wishes of the party that they may grow up to be useful representatives in society. Who knows but these babies may grow up, form at tachments for each other, hitch teams, and pull together for life, and this notice !nay be read by them, their children, and their children's children. Thus ended one of the most happy occasions we ever attended. CHESTER COMITY' ITEMS.—A gang of, horse thieves again infest Chester county. Last week the members of the Vigilant Fire Company, of York. presented their Treasurer, Jeremiah Car!, with a gold medal, as a token of esteem. The firemen of Philadelphia are having quite a laugh over a Paid Fire Department Bill which has just been introduced into the city Councils. It compels anybody and everybody, whether firemen or not, to help put out fires; and it they cannot extinguish the same to tear the neighboring houses down, etc., etc. A steam fire engine was constructed re cently, by the Amoskeag works, and so arranged that by a sim pie piece ofmachinery attached to the driving power of the appar atus, it was easily propelled at the rate of ten miles per hour. It wouldn't be a bad idea, when the invention is complete, for the Columbia bays to have one of them placed on their engine. The many friends of David M. Lyle, Chief of the Fire Department, of Philadel phia, were pained and shocked last week, by the announcement of his sudden death. aN.tr.
