Jeff Davis has been released on bail, after two years' imprisoment. lle is bound over in one hundred thousand dollars to appear at the November term of the CourL. For the intervening term he is at liberty to go or come, when, where, and as he pleases. These are facts, and that practical habit of the American mind which leads it to accept many accomplished events in seeming consonance will Pope's theory that "what ever is, is best." will enable it to bear this with composure ; and this all the more readily, because the instant power of evil which Davis possessed, thanks to the persistence of Congress, has been shorn from him. But, really, what a sad and humiliating thing it is that this result, and this only, has been attained ! The country thirsts for no blood. It has excused, or seen excused by its agents, nearly every individual who was arrested for complicity in the greatest treason and crime of all the ages. It has restored their property to red-handed trai tors. It has executed none. It has banish ed none. And now the very pith and essence, the animating cause, the deviser and supporter, the executive and represen tative of the grand crime, walks away unscathed amid the bows of those whom he sought to destroy. to be welcomed by those who were nrt part with him in his offence. Nothwithstanding the fact that this liber ation is made by order of filo got-eminent— nothwithstanding it was approved by Mr. Greeley and urged by Mr. O'Connor, and sought by ex-President Pierce—the country and the world will condicler it a huge political blunder, as well as something more serious. Either Davis was guilty, and most guilty, of lugh treason, or he was in nocent. If he latter, they are responsible in damages who so long restrained him from liberty. If the former, they are cen surable who tolerated his enlargement. But there is no question of his guilt. And if it is urged that his health suffered by long confinement without trial, we first traverse the statement. He has come out from his retirement refreshed and streng thened, and every way improved for it. It was an opportunity for recuperation to him. But if he did suffer, what was that just suffering compared with the villainous tortures to death which were experienced by brave Union soldiers, through his in strumentality and at his direct command, in Libby prison and A ndersonville, and elsewhere? If he suffered, so much the better. lie deserved to; not for his crimes only, but for those of his agents, and :IS a lesson to all future times that the way of the transgressor is hard. Many specious pleas, we are aware, will be filed in defence of this action. But all, supported by the prettiest reasoning, will be insufficient to satisfy tho moral sense of mankind that justice has been done in the premises. It was believed that the culprit should have tasted of the fruit of the sour apple tree which he dispensed so liberally to patriots. But it was, and even yet is, demanded by a great• majority that he should, at all events, be tried before he was enlarged. Ae may, if well assured _of a favorable result, still condescend to render himself famous by figuring for all time as another Warren Hastings—to be, like him, excused from punishment. But he may refuse. And the government and the laws, which should be beholden to the conde scension of no criminal, are now at the mercy of the greatest whom they over were provided for. If he comes into court, it will be almost imperative to reward his magnanimity with acquittal. This result will be hailed in the south, and rightly hailed, as a victory. The great criminal is free Major co ntient in se minorern —lf he goes unwhipped, who should be scourged? All punishment becomes crim inal, and we may prePare at once to welcome, with more than fraternal love and with ovations, the smaller imps who revolved about him and did his bidding. And, furthermore, as experience has proved that treason is not a crime, but a direct appeal to the sympathies and admiration of the loyal part of the nation, we may bequath to our sons, with the dept which they must inherit, the warning to be always prepared for rebellion against any law which is law, or any proposals which are distasteful to any. They may expect to find the chivalry of any section resorting to the arbitrament of arms when excessive wealth, or an itch for notoriety, of any other cause, renders it desirable twilit-hien- tial mon. The rebellion in a free country was unpre cedented. And in order that history shall not be able to give its parallel, we aro witnesses to a decision which the moral sense and sense of justice of all mankind must condemn—to a decision which remits a traitor and villain to affluent distinction, which embarrasses all subsequent legis lation, which disarms true patriots, and gives weapons of logic to men who unspar ingly used those of steel. Fortunately, the south is in no condition yet for another appeal to arms. But it must be always borne in mind that we have practically said that in this country treason is not a crime. Phila. U. S. THIS 'WONDERFUL REMEDY was disco vered and introduced about twenty years ago by Dr. S. Cheopens, an eminent Egyptian physician. He had long seen and felt the want of some reme dy which would strike at the root of disease, and so prevent much of the suffering which the human faintly was then compelled to endure. The great question was presented to his mind every day in vhid colors as he moved among the sick and dying, and observed the inefficiency of nearly all the remedies then in use. Thus Ito was load to think and experiment ; and after ten years of study and labor, he presented to his fellow-man the wonderful Zingari Bitters. The effect of this prep aration in tho prevention and cure of disease, was so mart ellous and astonishing, thnt the most flat- tering marks of royal favor were bestowed upon hint who discovered it. Ills name was placed upon the Roll of Nobles, and a gold medal with the fol lowing inscription—Dr, Cheopsus, the Public Bene factor—was presented to him by the Viceroy. The preparation has been used in severed epidem ics of cholera, both as a preventive and curative measure, and with such great success, that it has been introduced into nearlyall the general hospitals of the old world. As its name implies it is remittent in its effect, recurring at stateu periods. As in Fever and A.gue this disease is preceeded by a dull, listless feeling. Soon the Fever, accompanied by a violent head ache, comes on. After raging a length of time it disappears for a ieW hours, only to return with increased severity, and leaving the suflorer prostrated mentally and phy sically. In ordinasy practice the first re• sort of the physician in the treatment of this complaint is quinine and mercury. The disease by this treatment is checked—not cured—and is liable at any time to return. MISIILER'S BITTERS I= CEioi,ER_A. Mishler's Bitters cures effectually all such eases by inducing a healthy action of the Liver and by their unsurpassed tonic pro perties prevent a recurrence of the disease. When Mishler's Bitters were first intro duced to the public the proprietor did not feel justified in recommending it as a spe cific for Cholera During the fidl et Dr. Mishler received the following note from Jacob L. Baker, Esq., of Lancaster Pa., a member of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Mr. Baker had a great deal of experience in the treatment of Cholera is a druggist of sixteen years standing, was Hospital Steward inthejefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, C three years, and is withal a gentleman of undoubted integrity and one in whose stMement the most implicit confidence can be placed : Lancaster, November 3d, 1535. Dr. Mishler—Dear Sir:—Knowing that, the Cholera with its dread lul ravages is now up on our land, and knowing that no medi cine now in our country possesses such a caloric in flaw ice "which is the vital reme dy for all diseases of this kind," as the Bitters yon now making I request you to prepare such a quantity of your hitter as would suit all demands, as I assure you they will be an invaluable remedy, and will be hailed as a blessing by all who will use it. Yowl; respectfully.. JACOB L. BAKER Being thus urged, and Laving noticed. the Bitters were constantlyeuring the most violent cases of Diarrha3a, Cholera Morin*" and kindred complaints_Dr. Mishler at last ()tiered his compounds asa cure air Cholera The result - has exceeded his most sanguine expectations and billy justifies all that Mr. Baker says in his note. It certainly proves that Mr. Baker's practical knowledge of medicine tar exceeds that of most doctors who too often dose their patients with de leterious drugs on some a bisard theory.-- For the purpose of showing that Mishler's Herb Bitters will cure Cholera we give below a few filets. All intelligent persons who have investi gated the origin 01 cholera, agree that it is caused by poison introduced and generated into the system by impure water, damp ness, filth and over-crowded rooms with deficient ventilation. This is proved by the fact that cholera always rages worse on board of ships where all of the above causes are bound• more or less combined. To cure cholera, and also to prevent it,it is necessary to neutralize this position, and that Mishler's Bitters will do this is proven Uy the following: The steamship - Virginia, arrived at the Port of New Nark a boat the middle of April with cholera a board a number of the passengers having died during the voyage with this complaint. Among the passen gers were a family named Schmid), front Baden, Germany., This family was at tacked with cholera. Fortunately for then) they had friends living in this city an caste Pa.,) who knew the virtues ofMish ler's Bitters and who procured a bottle and sent it to the Schmidt family. When this package arrived at Quarantine, the doctors examined it and confiscated the contents. Another bottle was preen red and packed in a more secure manner: it safely reached the Schmiths. On its arrival aboard the Vir ginia, Henry SvhmiLii and Christ. &Min ith were both laboring - under choleric symp toms: Mrs. Marcia Schmidt, wife 01 the former was very bad, not expected to re cover, and a son had died of the dread com plaint and had been buried thedav previ ous. It was in this plight a bottle of Mish ler's Bitters, sent forth like an Angel of Mercy found the poor Schmidt family.— ry Sch with was the first to try it, and so instantaneous was tint relief he experi enced that he gave it to his wife and brother both of whom it at once relieved. They used the entire contents of the bottle and all three were so much relieved that the physicians permitted theta to leave the Virginia, after being confined at quartadine aboard that scourge ship forty-two says.— The Sehmiths proceeded to their relatives in Lancaster, and at an early opportunity called on Dr. Mishler to express their grati tude for the timely relief they had found in his Bitters. Mr. Henry Schmidt stated that all the compounds the doctors had given hint did no good, but that one glass of Mishler's Bitters made him feel like a new titan, warming his whole system, giving him at. healthful heat and causing him to perspire freel" , . His statement was substantially wits substantially as given above, and be further said that if the doc tors had not kept the first bottle from reaching hint, his son would yet lave been living. Mrs. Schmidt was still weak trout the of cholera, but the continued use of the Bitters were most surely restoring her accustomed vigor. It is not to be expected that regular 31. Mr. 11. Mishler—Sin—About eight weeks since I was bitten in the left hand by a snake, but at the time did not, know of what species it was. Immediately after the bite my hand swelled to a very large size, and the poison appeared to lie work ing, up my arm. I suffered great pain in nay hand and arm ; I had to quit work and was afraid I would be compelled to have my hand amputated. I came to you. and by your advice N\ ashed my hand and arm With your Herb Bitters at the same time taking it inwardly. In eleven days I was able to go to work again. The poison was all drawn out and Mishler's Herb Bitters WitS the only medicine or application that I made use on Mr. Christian Burns, a near neighbor of mine, went out a day or two after to the place where I was bilten, and killed what I believe was the same snake that bit me as he caught within live yards of the spot where I was bitten, It proved to be what is called a copper snake; at any rate, whether it was the same one that bit me, or not—one thing is certain— that your Bitters cured the bite of at snake in my ease for which I shall ever be thank ful, as I believe it was the means of saving my hand. i shall be pleased to personally satisfy any one of the truth of the above.
