Mr. James Moss of Wrightsville, there paid a wager which he had made and lost, with flowery on the result of the Presidential election.— He sawed up a cord of wood and was sur rounded nearly all the time by eager look ers on, and often asked, " Well, Jim. how do you like to saw wood?" It is well for Bowery that he did not lose the bet, as we do , not see how he would over have gone through a cord of wood. VAVDALTSII.—MR. EDITOR : We have been informed that viewers have been appointed, to meet on Saturday next, to view ,and locritea street commencing on Second Street opposite Cherry, and ex tending to Frozu.Streed, at a point near the Susquehanna Engine Home. We would inquire of the tax payers of our country mid Borough, whether this contemplated improvement, is at the present, ,indispeplible—or whether they would regard the advantages resulting from the opening of the street, adequate to the expenditures necessarily ineured in the making of the same. In the opening of the ,street Ah p everal buildings will have to be demolrched or removed. The first of \Odell is the his torical old dwelling of the family of John L. Wright, dee. The demolition of this dwlling alone would not only be a source of regret to the family who now ocr,upy it—whose ances tors have occupied it for more than a cen tury, but to many of our citizens Nvho have a kind regard and esteem for this relic, which has a historical association with the entity history of our country.. The plainiim inills'of.John H. liarliman, erected at a Yost, of perhaps 1:‘,001, would also have to be removed, together with other property, situated on Front Street, possibly requiring an expenditure of ten thousand dollars for the right of way alone. for the extent ion,9ftbis stl•eet. The vriter of this article would be sor ry to thwart the progress of any Improve ment that would be of real advantage to the development ofour town, bat would simply ask is the project commensurate with the expen di t tires required. MoNOPOlV.—Monopolies in any and MI shapes, retard the march of huma progress; purchasers al ways seek the ma ket where the greatest quantity is offered for sale ; and competition is the life of all human transactions. The citizens of Co lumbia are maintaining a great monopoly to the injury of every property holder with in the limits of the borough, Melt:ding those for whose apparent benefit, the mo nopoly is maintained. Columbia is the most natural business point on the Sns quehanna ; houses are already in demand, the recent vote shows that her population is rapidly inerasing, and the time has ar rived when her streets must be extended to accommodate such increase. The City of Harrisburg has mommy •miles of streets which five years ago, were included with in the limits of cultivated fields, and near ly the whole of the South Ward in that city would have remained a cow pasture until the present time, if the city authori ties bad not extended us streets. ICvery city and borough • should have as many vacant lots as it has of those which itre im proged, so OS to prevent a monopoly and encourage those who have the means, and are disposed to build. There is not an acre of land adjoining the borough which yields more than the interest of ;s3oo,for anyf arm ing purpose, and yet if the Streets were ex tended through these lands and lots of 50 feet front by 130 feet deep, sold at the low figure of $330 each, the owner would realize about $1,500, for every acre thus sold, in addition to the damage for that portion used forstreets. Individuals have at all times, been compelled to give up for a proper compensation, a portion of their lands for public streets: and no person has ever been known to keep any large num ber of lots out of market, when he was compelled to maintain a brick pavement along their entire front, and when he could sell them for three times as much OS they ' were worth for any other purpose. Fifth Street has been extended, and a movement is on foot to extend Cherry to Front; let our streets be extended in every direction so that those who wish, can purchase lots lorge enough to have a garden in rear of their dwellings, and not be compelled to purchase twenty feet strips at three prices, from the present monopoly of lot holders. Ambition appears to be contagious and a few active business men have the capacity for instillingmore or less ambition Inten:a mind of every citizen. Columbia should build at least one hundred buildings per year, during the next ten years ; the etTect of which would be to double her trade all the time that such building was going on ; double her population, rind double the price of every building within her limits. Shall our streets be extended or shall our present dog-in-the-manger policy be con-; tin tied I LOCAL. 5-,--- .A1,....%,.1'ZiLD.. 'On the 10th inst:, by Rev. Joseph Ste ven; in Jersey Shore.
