- There -is theiintiiiiibjeat distress, not only' Through the immediate range about Nicks burg, but through all Mississippi. Hunger and starvation are rife, and the Captain as -sserts that many runaways whom he saw looked like skeletons,•covered with a pallid within which their bones seemed to rattle. So in Arkansas, along the White river. 'The Captain was informed - that Hindman ordeied no trading with Yankees on pain of death, save for ammunition and salt. 4lre are also informed on indisputable au thority that 5,000 negroes have been order ed by Major General Butler to work on cut •tinga canal across the bend on which Vicks "burg, or its remains, are now situated. The , bed of the Mississippi being thus turned, Vicksburg becomes an inland city for ever more. Seven hundred incendiary •i bells have 'been sent for to New Orleans, with which to reduce the remains of Vicksburg to ashes, and the canal is fast progressing to corrkple- Ition. FROM VICKSBURG. CONTINVATION OF TOE ZOMBARDMENT PITILADELPIIIA, July 7.—A special des match from Memphis, dated Gth inst., states that the ram Lioness bad arrived there from Vicksburg with dates to 2d inst. The canal being cut across the point of land opposite Vicksburg was nearly com pleted. A large number of negroes had -been collected to work on the canal from the various plantations in the vicinity, and in all cases Government receipts wore given for them. Several thousand more are about to be engaged on the work. It is supposed that when the ditch is finished the river will cut a wide channel during high water, forever leaving Vicksburg an inland village. The bombardment has been kept up at regular intervals from both fleets, Corn. Da vis - having arrived when the Lioness left. The Rebel batteries were replying occasion ally. It is stated that the Rebel works were to be stormed on the Fourth of July, and there is every reason to believe that the place has already fallen. The city is said not to be so badly damaged fig first stated. All the non-combatants were removed pre vious to the bombardment. The Rebel force is said to be IG,OOO. A story had reached the fleet that several hundred of the enemy were killed by the explosion of shells. FROM THE FLORIDA COAST. Destruction of a Rebel Fort— Capture of Prizes WASnINCTON, July G.—The Navy Depart ment has been officially informed that en the 15th ult., Lieut. Commanding Howell, in the gunboat Talama, accompanied by Lieuten ant Commanding English, in the Somerset, crossed the bar o (St. Mark's river and drove out a company of rebel artillery, with four or five field pieces, from a fort near the light house, afterwards landing and burning the fort, together with the buildings used as barracks. This was good service bgainst a nest ot rebels who had captured two of the Kingfisher's boats, and were preparing for other mischief. The Federal prize schooner, Bcauregard, has captured the English schooner Lucy, from Havana, fur endeavoring to run the blockade on the Florida coast. The United States steamer Somerset has captured the schooner Curlew, of Cedar Keys, Florida. She was from Havana. The same vessel surprised a steamer in Dead Man's Bay, loading with cotton. Before she could be reached øhø was fired and de serted by her crew. Her anchors, cables, Av., were saved. Tbo United States steamer .Montgomery, off the Rio Grande, has captured the English schooner Will-of-the-Wisp, loaded with kegs of gunpowder in fish barrels and in hsgs, percussion caps, thick shoes, and large cases marked "clothing." The United States steamer Bienrille, cap tared off Cape Fear, the schooner .Morning Light, from Nassau, and heading _for Wil mington. She was loaded with salt, acids, cigars, &c.
