dy, while many of the companies flew to arias at every alarm, some standing in their ranks file greater cart of the night. At day-break -we were in ranks. After breakfasting on biscuit and water the line was again formed and we moved Sack to wards the railroad. We are, at this writing, (Monday noon) in the woods near the rail way station, awaiting (rumor says) cars to return to York. It may not be propinfor a soldier to find fault with his superiors, but I must com plain of the want of system and military . foresight in all the arrangements for moving this Brigade. We were hurried from Har risburg, without being furnished with any thing except muskets and bayonets—no uniforms, no accoutrements. The majority of the men being entirely raw and unin structed in handling the musket, or in drill or any kind, rendered our Brigade of no great importance in face of an enterprising enemy. Add to this the total want of effi ciency or expetienae in our field officers, and you will see that the advantages of good, strong,, brave men, are [counteracted Foy the weakness of their organization. Oar men are to-day all in good health and spirits; ready and willing for any ser vice their country may require. I regret for the honor of the company to record the disappearance, early this morn .ing, of two of our men. Up to this time .they have not been heard from. They may be prisoners in the hands of the enemy, but I fear this the most favorable supposition. It is generally believed that they have de serted. d will withhold their names for the present. They were well known in town, and better things were expected of them.- 6 hope to give you a later account before the spy appears. Yours, &e., CAmr Scorr, April 20, 18G1 Dean Spy: My last brought us up to leaving Camp Ashland, or, as the soldiers term it, Camp Misery. Early on Monday we took up our line of march for the Railroad to take cars for York. Provisions were very scarce and the men complaining. We lay here all day. In the evening while lying waiting for the train, a colored messenger arrived in our lines with information that a large body of horsemen were on the march to destroy the Railroad Bridge, two miles above Ashland, :which would cut offour railroad communica tion. Our Captain immediately offered the services of his company to go forward and protect the bridge at all hazards. His oiler was promptly accepted, and we were formed in line and led up the road in double quick Rime. Atter a hard run we arrived at the ,Fridge ahead of the "Plugs." Lieut. Rambo .was ordered to take twelve of our most trusty men and climb the hill overlooking the bridge. The Captain stated that as this was a service of danger he would prefer volunteers who had determined to sacrifice life if necessary. Nearly the entire company stepped forward. ,Qur movements were so prcmpt and rapid that the "Plugs" were foiled and the trains passed over safely. Our men seemed eager for a fight, and there was no flinching. At Midnight we took the cars and after a most tedious ride reached Yoi k at 9 a. m., Tuesday, men all well, but very hungry and thirsty. After we had debarked, Rev. J. 11. Menges served us with provisions—baskets of bread, meat, &c. His kindness will ever be remem bered and if the prayers of our boys avail he will be blessed. We were maretteii to the Fair .Grounds, where we took up our quarters. Our friends soon began to pour in with provisions of every kind, and our tired hungry company was soon supplied not only with necessities, but luxuries. Never has it been my fortune to meet with more kindness than . from the ,citizens of York. The soldiers will not soon forget their hospitality. It would be invidious to mention names. All seemed alike actuated by a desire to make us comfortable and to minister to our wants. Our men are all in good spirits and are , getting tolerably profi cient in drill; we hope soon to be in more ,active service. Private William B. Berri was discharged on account of physical disabil ity. More next time. (Our correspondent says in parenthesis in the above letter, "Praise the citizens for us." The desire on the part of the men that the citizens shall have their meed of praise shows most conclusively how nobly it has been earned. On the part of Columbia we beg leave to thank our kind friends of York for the friendly sympathy extended to our citizens Row bearing arms and encamping in their borough. It is what might be expected of them, and will not soon be forgetten by our soldiers or citizens.—ED Spv.] Columbitt . Lumber Market. panel Boards and Plank, W.
