Snakes— Mr. Uriah ■ Hildebrand, while cradling oats, on Friday week, in York township, York county, killed a snake which measured three feet and four Inches in length, and ten inches in thickness. Struck by Lightoinq.—On Wed nesday, the 20th ult., anew stable be longing'to Mr. Isaac Sheely, in White Hall, Mountp’easant townihip, was struck by lightning, and entirely con sumed, with a carriage, sleigh, hay, die. The loss was quite heavy, and not in sured, as we learn. About the same time the house oc cupied by Mr. James Welsh, near White Hall, was also struck by light ning. Balloon Ascension at York.—On Saturday last, Mr. James A. Dale, of the drug firm of Dale & Hart, made a balloon ascension from Centre Squar® in York. The balloon used belongs to Mr. Jojin Wise, of Lancaster, and the veteran feronautwas present to super intend the inflation and ascension. At twenty minutes before two o’clock, Mr. Dale, accompanied by Mr. Gates Weis er Jr., ascended, the ballon taking a. southeast direction. Afterseveral min-, utes, a live cat, attached to aparachute six feet in diameter, was dropped from the basket, and alighted in safety about a mile and a half from town. Attwen ty minutes past two the balloon was seen to decend, and it reached the ground in Hopewell township, fourteen miles south of Ifork. The Stouffurstown Sunday School was holding a picnic in the woods, and Abram Stouffer, a young man ab*,ut eighteen yearsofage,ason ofMr. Jacob Stouffer,-of A., was on a large tree, en gaged in putting uy a swing when the limb on which he was standing broke, precipitating him to the ground, a‘ dis tance of thirty feet.
