Agricultural [From Dfi'z't Erpcrimi >i'«' Farm Join n - . I.) F.XPEIHM.ENTS WITH COAL ASHES. It is generally thought in the country that the ashes of mineral coal are not only useless ns a fertilizer anil imnrover of the soil, but that on the contrary, they are hurtful, Hence you see that farmers reject these ashes, greatly to the detriment of agriculture, while quanti ties of them might he procured from tho iron works with no other cost than that of gathering them. It is, therefore, interesting to report an experiment undertaken by a corres pond -nt of the Journal ilc V Ar/rlcuUnre He tilled in tho fall three flowerpots with pure bitumens coal ashes without mixture of any kind, and sowed in the flrat wheat, in tho second oats, and in the third some strawberry seed. These pots were buried in a bed iu his garden and left to themselves. The germination took place •success fully during tho winter, and in March following the plants presented a line npi>eanin(;e. In April, the wheat, oats, and strawberry plants were in fine ■growth. The wheat and oats lipemd perfectly ; the berries were large, clear, very well Tilled, and 1 heavy. The wheat straw attained a height of more than lifty-four inches ; that of the oats forty threo inches. As to tho strawberry plants they came on finely, and contin ued to grow well until October, when it became necessary to transplant them. Set out in open ground, they are now the greenest and stiongest of all the sec dlings. I hus it is seen that, without the addi tion of either soil or manure, coal ashes were sufficient in itself, according to tills trial, to nourish and bring to maturity both wheat and oats, and tosupiiort tho growth of strawberry plants during a yeai. Coal ashes, from its nature, should i*ffeet a division of soiK and ho very useful in overcoming the stiffness of compact land ; it would, then, at the same time, act as a manure and an im prover. This, moreover, should be the case, judging, not only by this experiment just described, hut from anylysis made by several chemists, among others Da vy, who found that these ashes contain- ed, in proportions varying with the lo calities whence the coals came, sulphates of potassa and lime, carbonate of lime, clay and silica. The above experiments have been corroborated, in part, by my own ex perience. J have found it to pay well the trouble and expense of hauling coal ashes a distance of four miles. The ashes should be screened before spread ing upon the fields. The clinkers and cindeisare of moieserviceon roads than on cultivated land. Stiff soils an* ben efited mon* by < calashes than any oth ers. Their application tends to loosen th".ni, which alone would make them more productive, if they did nothing else. On an acre. <own with oats, lap plied coal allies, and the yield of*giuin vasmu.ch belter and the straw much ranker than on anv oilier part of the field. Though it has generally been aliopced that these asht* possess no fertilizing properties, experience, as well as science (dearly proves i( to he ernaiious, They do po«-ess enough to make it pay to gather tlum in large ijuanlities. Es pecially are coal a.-he?, in towns and eit jos valuable, because some proportion of wood isalways«oii>ume.i with the coal. They can always be had for the trouble -of hauling, and in the winter months the-exjiense of do’n, r so is not great, ho cause loams have little to do. They should be used for top droving grass lands and mi adow -, and all other other soil?: that are tough and still. .How to Raise a Fiu-t-uate chop >v i J oTatoi-s. —“J. M.,” Chester Co., X»a. Cooking Hams.—l have learned much in the half dozen years since 1 : haveaS'Uiued the re*pon>ibiiiu of be ing my own housekeeper, as to the mode of boiling a ham. 1 knew very well that it was spoiling a good ham ever lo iry it when it can be broiled.— But i found that there were ways ot boiling a whole ham so as to ruin i* ; and this is the way 1 now bob it : If k be a Maryland or a Virginia ham. or any one rather old or hard, it should be soaked over night -n water, then put into a surable cooking put of cold wa ter, which should be raised to a gentle boil, or rather simmer, and this should be continued for fifteen minutes for eve ry pound weight of the ham. Then takeout; remove the skin, and dust over plentifully of bread-crumos and set in tbc oven xo bcvtio from liftAcn t<» thirty minutes. A lu\m cooked in this way should be very tender juicy and of fine flavor, provided it was originally good. Jf this will assist any one in her knownedge how to improve upon the “ old way” of preparing a whole ham for the table, I shall be satisfied. I know very well that if once tried it will always be tried.— Germantown Tel egraph. Preserving Timbek.—To builders, gardeners, and others who employ home grown timber for fencing and other purposes, a correspondent in the London Gardener's Chronicle recom mends a preventative of dry-rot, which he says lias been thoroughly tostcil by experiment, ft consists in soaking the timber for a short time in lime water. A pit or tank, or good sized tankj ac cording to the extent of requirement, will answer the purpose, the lime being added to the water in the proportion of eighty-eight grains to the gallon. Tim ber prepan d in this way is said to stand the weather remarkably well.—South ern Planter. Houses.—Horses as a general thing get too much licaing and too little feed. If a man loses his hut while driving his horse he licks the horse to pay for it.— If ho runs into another wagon through his own carelessness ho licks his horse to make it all right, if hehslips or stumbles ho gets licked forit—if ho does anything he gels licked, if lie don’t do anything ho gets the same, a great many horses have “a sight” more than their drivers, and if could change places with them, society at largo would be gainers, nnd so would the horses. i 33t12 ©001)0.
