° JlgcicultiiniL [FV«r Iho Practical Farmer, Varieties of Hcloat. I send a fe\y notes on a trial of the different varieties of melons (musk) with me for this and hut season. Mhc summers of 'U7 and have Kvn rath er too wet xor a perfect growth of mel ons in this section of country. This last spring being wet and backward, we-wii not get our melons planted uutu about the 10th of May. The dry >\h-U in J uiy scorched the vines somewhat and re- U\roed the growth oi the lu\d-;oruud melons, causing a hardening of the rind so that when a week of showery weaiher came, and the vines startivi to grow with renewed vitality sad a sad den flow of sap onMiod. a number of flue specimens split or Imrsted at the end?. &tiil we have had and are still enj »ying some very tine specimens ot the difler ent varieties bciow, vvhieh aU being planted at one lime, in the xiu.e kind of soil, exposure, etc,, it wui l-e pre sumed offers a fair comparison of loci: several merits, etc. It will lo mu.cr s:ckhl that 1 speak only as an amateur: I know nothing of their quahtu-s as market fruit, 1 have nanud thorn ;u iheir order of ripening with me. £aJrnny jLvu:. — I shall di-oarvl, from its insignificant duo ami tough fleth, it is of good flavor, however, and ripens early, W eig fourth to oue-half pound. Grt<n Citron.—\ his ripens as early with rue as the above. It is of medium size, modeiately rough rind. Flesh about one iuc'* in tnickness; tender, juicy, and of a high spicy flavor, and very productive. We.ght from 1 to - pounds. Juirly White Japan. —A very fine ac quisition to ot melons. Not quite so early as the Green Citron.— Size, medium* to very large. The nml is nearly smooth, (except in the largest specimens, which are wide and deep lobod and somewhat rough,' of a stive ry-whiio color*‘turning to a delicate cream color at maturity. I'lesh from 1 to - indues thick, marr >wy, Mveet and delicate flavor. Wry productive.— Weight Irom three to -even pounds. AfitJt’s SvpertK— A nm-cralne s-nmoth -kinned variety; no: wordi growing with me. Takes its name from the shape of iht* Iruit, which large, deep lobed, and flattened at both ends. The rind is very rough; flesh from 1 to - inches in thickness; of excellent flavor. Weight from thne to five pounds Pine Apple* —I do not consider this a very distinct variety, as it resembles very much the Ureen Citron, except that it varies more in size—running in. weight from one-fourth to lour pounds. Sit: meg * —The Jobes in this variety are scarcely apparent, being covered with a network of veins, in appearance like a nutmeg. Medium size, lard., in coming to maturity ; but of a nich mus ky flavor. Not very pndiulive.— Weight one-half to two pounds. J*e siait. —This noble melon grov.s to a larger size than any other variety; the lobes are very wide. -kin nuHleraio ly rough. Flesh Inun une-hn.f to two and a-half inches thick ; rich, delicious flavor. In shape u is like the water melon. Weight ‘hree to eight poind-. In watermelons 1 Imve itmnd r.»»ne is excel tne Mountain s-wt-et and I.i exeam melon. llespeouul'y. C. IT. SrooNf.R. Capo May County. N. J.. Aut;. ~ Sr OF STAKEUS. .
