altirdituar. WORK FOR IB* MONTH. Every former that alAs to rfrii'c his ■work instead of letting it drive him, " ill bp found bestirring himself, early late not that wo would advise the farmer ro “ over do” or make o slave of himself, but to properly husbondjhls time, so as to he able to* do every thing just when it might to be done. , , . One great besetting sin of the farmeris to lay out more work than can bo thor oughly done, oven with continued good weather and no other hindrance. “ Woo uuto such farmers, for hindrances must, will, or do come. Bettor always allow sufficient margin for rainy days, sharpen ing plows, and other unavoidable casnal l* Should unusually favorable weather occur, and the farmer linds himself so completely up with his work us to have a. few leisure days from active operations in the crops, ho will find suoh time pro fitably spoilt in attending to repairs, or making some nice little improvement to buildings gates, or door-yard ornaments. THE FARM. lUituiV.— Spring barley should be sown us soon a» the ground can be got In proper order. This is not a favorite crop with western farmers, hut it growing more anti more into use, and where it succeeds, constitutes one of tho very best of Helds for horses. This crop on our rich soils, sometimes yields heavily; but in most of the Western .States it is but little sown. In the JJastorn States, it seems to succeed better. Breaking Coi.ts.—This season of the year is quite auspicious for breaking colts, 'll Is true that this shouldalways be going on in the every day handling nud oaring for the colt; but each one lias to have a •• beginning” m harness. A little light work iii tlie wagon is generally thought lo be better than patting them nt flrst'to the plow. Hoos.—Will still require some grain to keep them in growing condition. Do not turn them to clover yet. Give plenty of wood ashes, with alight sprinkle of flour of sulphur, every two or three weeks, as a prophylactic of disease. Horses.—As a general thing require more attention now than any other, from theeonstant demand Upon them for labor. Feed carefully, not to a surfeit, and curry thoroughly. Keep a sharp lookout for, windgalla and sore shoulders. The horse is naturally a healthy animal; most of Ilia diseases come from abuse. Manure.— ln every available shape should be carefully collected and spread, lie not haul it out when the ground is so wet us to damage from passing over it. Meadows.— That happen to be of un even surface may be materially improved bv passing a heavy roller over them when the ground is damp aud yielding. In this age of horse-power mowers, the face of the ground should be as level as possible; stones, stumps and snags should be removed, as far as practicable, in order that the mower may meet no impediment or unnecessary delay, as time Is often very precious in hay making. Cut, daks.— Do not allow these to bo a depot of faulty apples, decaying potatoes, or rotten cabbage. As the weather be comes warmer, give plenty of air, and, by all means allow no water to stand on the floor. Damp aud filthy cellars often generate disease, while dry and clean ones are not only healthy, but indispen sable. Clover Seed.— lt is not yet too late to sow clover seed. Karly, sowings often are frozen out. Clover makesgood pasture, good hay, good manure, and thus en riches the farm as Well as the farmer. Early rising is an important feature in the prosperity of the farmer.' Begin work early, if you want to keep up with your work through the day. Poultry.— That is, chickens, are par-, ticularly worthy of attention at this time. The continued cackleamoug them means " fresh eggs.” Encourage the little folks to gather the eggs—give them a stipulat ed share of the proceeds. This will assist in teaching them the true estimate to place upon the money thus obtained, which often, amounts to quite an item in flic course of a year. . . the garden, Plants that are Frozen Plants. frozen when received should be hmnedi alcly buried in the ground, and allowed to remain there a week or ten days before taking up and opening. Onions. —Especially may be put out as soon as the ground in in order. Onion seed does best later, when the ground is warmer. The onion delights in u rich soil and good culture. Parsnips.—Can not be sown too soon after the ground will admit of working. How in drills eighteen inches apart, and thin out to eight or ten inches in the row. Pkas.—Rest of all garden vegetables. Smv early, sow late, and “sow between whilesbe sure and sow. We had lath er eat peas any time than “ stick them;” lor that reason, no other, we recommend dwarfs. However, the taller varieties are generally the most productive, and amply pay for the extra trouble of stick ing. ORCHARD. Pruning.— We have had as good luck pruning now as any other time, though we are not as much of an observer of “times and seasons” as some others, The fact is, every month in the year has been recommended. The “how”, and “why,” are, however, of decided impor tance. We would ns soon risk pruning just us the buds areswelling and bursting, as at any other time. How to prune, is also a disputed point. One says “low heads” right at theground, the lower the better; while another re commends “ medium” trunks two or three feet; and a third says, fruit of any kind must have “air and light,” and that tall trunks are therefore best. It is quite probable that the medium , between these two extremes is nearly correct. The why, is also a debated point, yet it is a self-evident fact that some varieties require pruning, while others with na turally open heads require but little. The removal of large limbs fro to trees, has brought the whole system of pruning Into disrepute, by making wounds diffi cult to heal. This can be materially ob viated by coating them with grafting wax, or solution of gum sbelac. A thor ough scouring of soapsuds is a valuable remedy against mossy rough barked trees.- Bones as Manure. —The National Ag riculturist, says: An experienced Agri culturist who has made a great many ex periments with different manures and fertilizers/ gives bis opinion' on bone manures as follows. It may be compared to tbe best stable manure; Ist, in respect to the quality of grain, as 7 to 5; 2d, In respect to tbe : quality of grain, to 4; 3d, in respects to tile durability of the energy of soils so manured, as 3 to 2. It possesses several collateral advan tages; Ist, it destroys weeds; 2d, it di minishes the necessity of fallow-crops; 3d, this concentrated manure, or,substi tute for manure, is more easy of convey ance, less laborious to spread, and can with facility be applied to the steepest lands, in very billy countries, or in wet; meadow lands; 4th, it renders agricul ture practicable without cattle breeding, grazing, &e. Hokhk Talk. — A horse’s petition to his driver: Going up hill, whip me not; coming down hill, hurry me not; on level road, spare me not; loose in tire stable, forget me not; of hay and corn, rob me not; of clean water, stint me not; with sponge and water neglect me not; of soft ory bed, deprive me not; tired and hot, wash me not; if sick or cold, chill me not; with bit and reins, oh ! jerk me not; and when you are augry, strike me not. To JJxuve Flies Fkom A Rooji.t-Mlx with half a teacupful of milk, a .table spoonful of puely-grouud black pepper, and the same quantity of sugar. Put tills about the places where the flies are most numerous. To Take Rust Out op Steel.—Cover the steel well with sweet, oil, and let lt ! remain there for two or three days; and then use unslacked lime finely powdered, and rub with it until ail the rust'disap pears. - Busy.—Fulmers and gardners are bmy at this season of the year. ■ jFtoandaf.
