Rgeiruffastar. DOES FABWSG PAT 7, It would seem that one might with al most equal propriety Inquire, does It pay to llveon God’s footstool, and enjoy the bounties of His providence? For how else could the countless millions of the hu man family have been clothed and fed t They take a very narrow view of this question (If question it can bo ealiedjw)' 0 hose their calculation of the prontabie noss or unprofitableness of farming nn general by the profit or loss of a single crop of farm produce, on a certain piece of land, in a certain year. It is not to bo expected that any branch of bushiess will bo equally remunerative at ail times and under all circumstances. Trade of all. kinds is fluctuating. Manufacturing has ito uns and downs. Commerce is attend ed wTth mauy easuaUica, So it is with farming. Seasons difler; markets are un certain : soils vary; there is difference in the mode of culture, in the quality and quantity of seed used, in the kind of ma nure its manner of application, and Its adaptation to the particularaoils and crops, ana various other circumstances to po considered, in forming a correct judg ment on a question, of this character. — This I might illustrate by numberless in stances in my own farming experience, some of wbibli have proved profltablc, and others quite the reverse; cither of which, taken byjtaolf alone, would give a very poor Idea of. the profit or loss of farming in general. The,question is. not whether a certain" crop pays in. a certain year; it is not whether poor farming pays on poor land ; it 1s not whether poor farming pays on • good land; it is not whether farming pays as much cash profit as some other occu pation or branch of business, where great risks are Incurred, and much capital and much talent, employed; neither Is "it ■ whetherfarmlugpays as much ositshoukl and would, if it received that fostering legislative care that Us great interests de mand, and that is so often bestowed on other interests, ami sometimes, perhaps, to the injury of farming Interests. :I would not be understood as detracting at ail from the merits of other callings and pursuits. They are of incalculable. ad vantage, both, in themselves considered and in their relations and bearings to farming and other .interests. But the ' question is, does good, intelligent farm ing, on land suitable to cultivate, not withstanding all the drawbacks occasion ed by dronghtand flood, winds and frosts, destructive insects and birds, and unruly . animals—pay ? Not in a year of war arid high prices, nor In some future year of peace and low prices—but in the long run, or through a aeries of years, most as suredly It does. ■ Farming is the best business on earth for those who are adapted to it and lovo the calling, and let mo add, he is a poor apology for a man, whatever his occupa-. (bon , may be, who takes no interest in, the cultivation pf that soil from whence, done someth his daily bread. Other stations must be filled, and other callings uljrast ■ have their place, but I truly pity the man who would degrade farming,'or feel him self degraded while engaged, in it. If there is a rrian on earth more to bo en vied than another, in my estimation,, so far as outward blessipgs.are concerned, it is he who owns a good, compact farm, substantially inclosed, and under good cultivation, with good, convenient build ings, and good implements of husbandry, in good repair, whOaeform Is well stocked with choice animals, whose land yields the finest vegetables, and whose grounds and garden, likpthe garden of Eden, pro duce every tree that is pleasant to the eight, arid, good for food. If, in addition to all this, he is blessed with good health, is happy in all his family relations, free from debt, and has a few, hundreds, or a few thousands even, in cash capital, ju diciously invested, together witli the oili er always indispensible requisite to hap piness, a mind satisfied with reasonable enjoyments, then I say he is .rich indeed. And such incidents, I trust, are by no means rare. Certain am I that there are scores of farmers in many farming com munities who either have or should have' all these. Some seem inclined to estimate ‘•UI hy dollars nud cents. This is lac from a correct standard. Bow, many inestimable blessings wo enjoy which, gold and silver could notfurnish, What business is so conducive to health as farming? Is not health profit? What yields so sure a competency or gives great er tranquility of mind? What calling more independent, more honest, or.more promotive of habits of industry and good morals? What other business so safe, or other property so secure? What other place so good for the rearing and training of children and youth? Or what other so properly adapted to the necessary/quie tude of declining years ? We should give the farm due credit for what is derived from it, not only as regards money value but in the blessings and comforts it aou fera on those engaged in it. We apt to consider how large an amount of money is expended by families, in other occupations for vegetables, i&CAt. milk 1 butter, cheese, fruit, grain, hay, wool; fuel, timber, horse-hire* etc-,* most or all ' of which is saved to. thQ.’farmer, and should be credited to Just look around over any gqqd thriving farminrr community, and witness the abundance of good thAugs of tliis life with which th ev ftro and tell me where else can ho found more solid comfort. • Go back, those who can, ten, twenty, thirty or forty years, and behold the rapid pro gress that has beep made in all the ele ments of material wealth and prosperity. Witness, the. improvement in farm build mWPlwents of husbandry, and stock mark the change that has boon wrough t W tw general cultivation and improve ment of the soil, and with all this a cor responding advance in intelligence, good taste and refinement.
