THE PARTICULARS, Gbs.-llakpeok’s Head-quarters, May 30. During nearly all last night the moving of curs and the suppressed sond of steam whis tles betokened that some movement was go ing on in the, enemie’s &, but this not be in!? any it was not considered worthy of more than a passing re mark. . .... , About 5 o’clock this morning several ex plosions wore distinctly heard. Immediately afterwards skirmishers wore thrown out, and a general advance of the United States army commenced, when it was found that the eno ,ny hud loft liSs western stronghold and fled. A very large amount of railrord iron was loft untouched. There being some twelve or fifteen tracks of railroad running frdnfthe de pot to tho entrenchments, with side tracks and switches, tho enemy was onabled.to move off with groat rapidity. ■ From all information that can be gleaned from tho prisoners taken, it is thought that 'the evacuation was commeood at sundown last night, the enemy retreating in three di rections—East, West and South. Rcuurogard.stated to the citizens of Corin th that, he intended to throw himself on both our flanks, ■ At this hour Corinth is hold by our army as an outpost. Our cavalry are. seeking for the . enemy. The force sent from Gen. Pope’s command come upon and dispersed the enemy eight miles below Corinth, oh the Mobile and Ohio railroad, while in the act of burning the bridge at that point. ‘ Forty prisoners wore captured. Tho enemy’s rear-guard destroyed the rail road depot at Corinth, and a church, and in. tended to destroy the entire village; but the inhabitants saved some fifty of-'the houses. A few balos of cotton were consumed. They also broke open many of the stores and burn nod the contents. . ' A large force of' the United 1 States-cavalry, under Colonel Elliot, was sent out on Wed nesday morning, by a circuitous route to des troy a bridge on the Mobile and Ohi.o-railroad soutli of Corinth. Though tbifTexpedltion has not yet returned wo learn from the prisoners that it was known in Corinth last night that a bridge had been destroyed; forty miles south by a body of our. cavalry. , They also state that one of the 20-pounder Parrott shells fired from Gen. Pope’s column, in theflight yesterday, exploded in. their camp killing eighty men and Si hundred horses, and that a 3C#pound shell, thrown into Corinth as an experiment by Gen. Pope, destroyed a lo comotive and killed its engineer. It is thought, among the military men, that thoAestruotion of tbe.bridgo south of Corinth, the uncomfortable'proximity of our falling shells and the possibility of federal successes on the Mississippi, were-the onuses of the evac uation. • The enemy’s works wore certainly of very great Strength, and capable' ot a stout resist ance. . OFFICIAL DISPATCH FROM GENERAL -, f TIALLECK: Wasiiington, May 31.—Tho following-dis patch wa£ received this morning at tbe War Department: headquarters. Gamp near Corinth, 1; . . May 30, 18C2. ■ ji To the Hon. E. M.-Slantoii, Secretary of .War: The enemy’s position arid.works in front of Corinth were exceedingly strong, and he can not occupy a stronger position in his flight. This morning he destroyed an immense amount of public and private property, stores, wagons, tents, &0. For miles out of the i tQwu thb roads are tilled with arms, haver fcks, &o„ thrown away by his flying troops, large number of. prisoners and, deserters have been captured, estimated by Gen. Pope, at 2,000. , , Gen. Beauregard evidently distrusts his ar my or he would have defended so strong a position. His troops are generally much discouraged and demoralized. In all their engagements for the last few days their re sistance has booh weak. (Sigucd) 11. W. lIALLECK, Major, General Commanding. A Dispatch from Gen. McClellan A TERRIBLE BATTLE! Stanton, Secretary of War; The following dispatch has boon received from Gen. Pope; • 2b Maj. Gen. Halleck; It gives mo pleasure to report tho brilliant success of tho expedition sent out on the 28th inst., under Col. Elliott, in command of tho Second Cavalry. After forced marched, day and night, through a very difficult country, ho finally succeeded in reaching tho Mobile and Ohio railroad at Boonville, at 2 o’clock, a. m., on tho 30th. Ho destroyed, the track in many places, both south and north of tho town, blew up one culvert, destroyed' the switch and track, burned tho depot and locomotives, and a train of 26 cars, loaded with supplies of ev ery kind—destroying 10,000 stand of small arras, three pieces of artillery, and a groat quantity of clothing and araunition,. and pa rolled 2,000 prisoners Which he could' not keep with his cavalry; The enemy hod hoard of his movements and had a train,of,boxxars and flatcars, with flying artillery and; stooo5 t 000 infantry,, moving up and down tho road to prevent him from catching it. The whole road was lined. with rebel pickets. Col. Elliott’s command subsisted upon meat alone—such as they could find in. the country through which they passed—for sev eral days. For daring arid dispatch.this ex pedition has been distinguished in the high est degree, and entitles Col. Elliott'and his command to high distinction.
