The first shot was fired by the rebels, the shells passing over .the heads of Gen. Porter ■nnd staff without exploding. The I atteries of Griffin, Third and Fourth Rhode Island, and Fifth Massachusetts were now placed in position, replying to every shot sent, by the. rebels.- The cannonading continued with hut but slight intermission until dark. About 400 shots wore fired by both parties durinirtho Miy. The loss on our tide was three Ul.ed and seven wounded. The position of the rebels is a stinng one. From present indications their fortifications ’extend some two miles in length, and mount heavy guns. _ The ground in front of their heavier guns is low and swampy, making it utterly im 'passable. JPK.OM SEIK YORKTOWS. . . Near Yorktown, April 9. ’The weather still continues unfavorable for military operations. It has been raining for two days. The creeks are much swolen, and the low ground covered with water, making the road. almost impassable for empty wag ons. Information received shows thatslo Rob ots have a force of sixty thousand, which is rapidly being add td t(J-by troops from tho neighborhood of Richmond, which is one day from Vorktown by railroad and river. ' They' have four sto infers and sixteen transports in ‘use, and, by the time the roads are in condi tion for tho Union army to move, tho Rebels may bo able to meet them with one hundred thousand men—tho flower of their army, with their hestarms. Besides, they are in a strong ly entrenched position. Previous to oiir troops occupying their pres ent position, the military authorities had no ■moons of hsodctaing the extent of the Rebel works. Information obtained through deser ters, contrabands and other sources, show that the enemy have nearly five hundred guns, some of them of the; largest calibre. Tho Rebel General, Johnson, with some of his forces, has arrived and taken commend in ■person, showing that they intend making a ■desperate resistance to the advance of our' troops at every point. ; ■ Tlie cheering news from tho Western De partment arrived here to-day, and our troops are wild with enthusiasm over the result, and are anxious to be led to action, that they may perform similar deeds of valor.
