THE BULL RUN OFFICIAL REPORT HE THE U. S. MEDIOA)L DI RECTOR.—FROM 800 TO 1,000 killed: AND WOUNDED. The following-official report has just been made public: - Asuncion, Department N.'E. Virginia,) •• *• July 26, 1861.' Sin : Being Chief of the Medical Staff ring with the army in the Department of N. £. Virginia, I have the honor to make the fol lowing report of so much of the results of tho action oh tho 21st, at. Hull Run, as came with in my charge.' As tho officers of tho Medical Staff wore attached to the different regiments, , and on duty with them, I doeihod it proper to Remain with andaccompany the General com manding and staff from tho beginning to tho termination of the battle, in order that I might bo enabled to visit in this way every part of the field where tho killed and wound ed might bo found. After the action hod fairly commenced, and the wounded and the dead were seen lying oh tho field in every direction I despatched As , .Blatant Surgeon D. L. Magrudor to the rear, with directions to prepare a church, which-1 had observed as. we passed before arriving at tho scene of action, for the reception of our wounded, and also to send the am oulanoes forward as rapidly as possible to pick up the wounded and the head. . . Tn a very few minutes the ambulances made thcirappcaruncc, and cun turned through out the day to visit every part of the ground which was accessible, in order to be within reach of those parts of tho field where the fighting was going bn, and wounded were to bo found. ■ • It.is due to tbe aoibulynce drivers to say that tlicy performed their duties efficiently, pud the results of their operations also.show Low absolutely necessary these moans of conveyance arc to the, comfort and relief of tho wounded, in giving them shelter and wa ter when ready, to perish with heat and thirst.' By, medhs of the abulanec, also, the men who go:.to the relief of their wounded comrades, are separated hut short time from their companies, as, having deposited them in the anlbulaucus, they cun then return to their'proper positions. . .. As the General Commanding visited almost cV.try part of tile ground during the confiict, with a view to encourage or'dirept the move ment'of-the frcopg.-my ,position os a meat her Of ids staff gave nie e very opportunity of sce ing.tho result of tlieActionl ' ■ 1 therefore embraced tho opportunity thus afforded to, give .•dffectiuD, when needed, to , the drivers.-of th j ambulances.where to-find the dead and, pounded, and also to those car i rying off the wbuuded where they could find the needed conveyance. The stretchers were found very useful and comfortable to tho wounded, and were in con . 1 stint requisition in conveying them to the nearest ifcnbulituce. Eo tar us 1 am informed, the medical staff belonging to the.ditt'erent' volunteer regiments discharged their du ties satisfactorily l übserved Acting Surgeon - Milos busily engaged , in dressiug-wbuuded men under tho shade of a tree in a part of the field ivhero die fife from the enemy was very hot. He addressed me ,in a brief inquiry, us I passed, relative to the , safety of his lather, ami then resumed his bo-, ; bupation." Surgeon C. 0. Kerncy, of Col.' Hunter’s di vision, and Assistant Surgeon D. L, Magru dor, utlirchcd to the Commanding General’s stuff, did good service iu the hospital .church I have mentioned, and also, in two houses near the church, where the wounded- had , been placed after the church had boon filled, These officers remained busily engaged in their ■duties until the enemy’s cavalry made its ap pearance, ittiVl hut narroivly escaped capture wheu they left. Drs. Smith and Wiustuu, at iuehod £o the New York Eight, remniued with ■their sick, saofifiniiv" srftish considerations for : Jtlioir o\ru -aiwf now prison ers.' - I nni iffljfurmed that Ae&stantSdrgeons prey mul Stcuisburg, of the regular nruiy, and Urn. Houistou and Swan ol the New York Fourteenth, also [irelorrud to remain rut Her alum abandon their charge. Theoonduct of ,these ellienfs is worthy ot all commendation. 4t would be prematura fu me, tho_ absence .of sufficient data, the reports of the regimental '.surgeons -nut yet being received, to express, ,|i positive opinion as to the number killed and wounded in tho action of the 21st. There were, no -doubt, many concealed from obser vation, uutter cover of woods and bushes, but judging from the number that I saw in vari ous parts, of the- field, and allowing a wide ■margin for those unobserved, I should think that the killed and waunded bn our side did olid not exceed from.SOD to 1,000. Tho impossibility of snaking a careful sur vey of tho field after the battle must bo my ■apology for the briefness and want of detail in this report. I may mention', before conclud ing, that 1 met on tho fiffid Colonel, Ileintzcl mun, U. S. A., with a minis ball in his arm. - 1 extracted tho ball as he sot on his horse, and applied the necessary dressings., 1 at tended to; a- niuuhar aj cases on the .field where, from hemorrhage and other cireum atanoes, ioimediata attention seemed to be necessary, I am, sir, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, 0 W, S.
