X, ; ,c Mb. LiNCotN’s Speeches and the Morti- Itication 6*f His Friends. —The 'Washington correspondent to the Now York, Express ■writes ... The mortification of the Republicans at Mr. Lincoln’s recent speeches increases with ovo py fresh emanation from the Presidential trip od! They begin when it is too late to realize the truth of the allegations of the Union men pf. Illinois ns to the moompetency of Lincoln for the ProsJdonoy. During the canvass, his supporters appealed triumphantly to his pub lished speeches as proof of his ability. It now appears, as suspected at the time, that these speeches wore carefully prepared by Mr. Judd and other friends of Mr. Lincoln, ' revised and ro-rovisod, polished and re-writ ton, to such a degree that they who heard ithem on the stump could not'recognize them in print. This was a part of the game of de ception played by the republicans upon the to foist a man upon the country forits .chief magistrate who was never regarded, by his most intimate acquaintances, as anything more than'a jocose, cunning, country politi pian. lam assured by those who know him well, that a more illiterate man it would bo dflicult to find, oven among the self-mado law yers pf Illinois, Ills chief characteristic is an jipmonso ‘gift of gab,' and a wonderful com mand of language, unaccompanied by a cor responding copiousness of ideas. Tha elect ion of such a man at such a crisis is undoubt edly the greatest evil that has over befallen Jhis country. But the mischief is done.and the only relief for the American people is to shorten sail, cdulk’ the .hatches, put in the dead-lights, send down the top-masts, 1 and prepare for a hurricane. . The New York Evening Pvsl advises the .postponement of tho.Morrill.Tariff bill until the .next session of Congress, and says* ■ “It is evident froni Mr. Lincoln's speech at Pittsburg, mile in tho midst .of a strongly pro-tariff people,.that he desires no hasty acr tion. His own mind is not made up as to the policy he will pursue on .the general subject. Of sho .Morrill Tariff itself ho professes that he knows nothing, and he recommends mem bers of Congress to take time to consider all the bearings of the . bill before committing themselves by a vote. Towards himself as tho chief of tie new administration, and tho person who is to. take the responsibility of a new order of things, it is most, unfair to de cide the revenue measures of the future, be fore he lias been able to give those matters the mature thought their importance de mands." So it appears that Hr. Lincoln’s Pittsburg speech gives immense satisfaction to the free traders, and is taken as evidence that he does not dcsiro tlie passage of tho Morrill bill. .If it does not pass the Senate before the 4th of March, its defeat will justly bo attributed to the influence of Mr. Lincoln’s Pittsburg speech.. ")Y, MitNoa Roberts, Esq;— -The following brief latter from our former.townsnmu, W. M. Roberts, Esq., who is now in Brazil, w.o copy from a recent number of tho . Philadelphia Ledger : The following .is an extract of a letter from Mr. Roberts, who is now in Brazil, superin tending railroad operations in that country: /‘I learn that .some accounts of my being sick, in Brazil, have been published in the Ledger, and some other newspapers,. LetmS’ assure you that I have not b.eon sick ; the cli mate agrees with me very well,'but I had a return of the abscess, (which laid me up* in PhUadelphia,) that confined mo chiefly to the house here, for , several months, but which, thank. Providence, is now considered radical-' v cured. My general health has remained, sound all the time. Our work is now better organized than it has been at any -previous period; for which wo have mainly to thank *our partner, Jacob Ilumbird, Esq., who has ''devoted himself indpfutigably and intelligent ly to his onerous duties. Yours, &c., Wm. Milnor Roberts!" . Opposed to War. —i The Paris correspondent of the 2Y;nes says a number of Senators and deputies have , arrived in Paris from the de partments, and it appears from their conversa tion that their constituents are all anxious that peace-may be maintained. The French pop ulation in the departments are unanimous in their expression that the Emperor has done quite enough for Italy, and that France can find better employment for her blood and trea sure.. The deputies who have spoken on the question of the unity of Italy, are of opinion that if it bo accomplished it will bo by the ef fect of time, and not by brute force. J6@“ The Senate of North Carolina, on the Bth inst., laid the resolutions of the Pennsyl vania Legislature on the table, because they Wore regarded as " offensive to the South.”— Gen. Dockery, cue of the strongest Union men in the State, applied this language to them, and said he thought they should bo treated with silent, contempt. Mr. Lincoln fears “the great confidence in his ability is unfounded.” Every speech lib makes is calculated.to sti'ongthen such an opinion. Hiarte.
