The laird of Cockpen. jnr ANECDOTE OF THE “MERRY MONARCH.’ 1 The lioodtiousnoss and thoughtlessness of King Charles JI. have become proverbial, and bis good nature, which qualified these, but ill atone for his ingratitude to those who suffered forfeiture and persecution in his cause. When lie-remained in Scotland, suffering tho robuko and censure of austere Presbyterianism, be fore the battle of Worcester, (1051,) his chief confidant ami associate was tho Laird of Cock pen, called by tho nicknaming manners of those times, “ Blythe Cockpen." Cockpbu followed Charles to the Hague, and by his skill in playing Scotch tunes, and his sagaci ty and wit, much,, delighted his merry mon arch. Charles’ favorite tune was “Brose and Butter.” It was played to him when ho wont to bed, and ho >vas awakened by it. At tho Restoration, (1060,) however, Blythe Cockpon was forgotten, and ho wandered upon the lands which he once owned in Scotland, poor and'Unfriended . ■ Cockpon wrote to the Court, but his letters were never presented, or were not regarded. Wearied and incensed, ho tra veled to London and placed himself in all pub lic places, thinking the eye of His Majesty, might reach him. But he was never noticed, and his mean garb did not suit tho rich and embroidered doublets of court; so he was in sulted and pushed away from approaching tho King’s presence. Cockpon, at length, at tempted by cunning what he could not accom plish by plain dealing. He ingratiated him self with the King’s organist, who was so en raptured with- Cockpen’s wit and powers of music, that ho requested him to play on the organ before King at divine service. Cock pen played with exquisite skill, yet never at tracted His Majesty’s eye. But at the close ■of the, service, instead of playing tho common tune used, he played up “ Brose and Butter,” with all its energy and characteristic merri ment. The organist in a moment was order ed into the presence'of Charles. “My liege it was not I,” he cried, and dropped upon his knees. “You!” cried His Majesty, in a de lirium of rapture, “ you could never play it in your life. Where's the man ? Lot me see him.” Cockpen presented himself on his knee. “Ah! Cockpen, is that you? L—d man, I '"•as, like to dance coming out of tho church.” “I.once danced, too,” said Cock pen, “ but that was when I had land of my own to dance on.” “ Come with me,” said the King, taking him by the hand, “you shall dance to ‘Brose and Butter’ on your own lands again to the nineteenth, generation,” ’ and he was as good as his promise.” ■ Remarkable Case of a Fast Woman.— The Cleveland (0.) Plaindealer says, in that city-one day last week, a woman, still young, ' and in whose face ■ trae'es of former beauty were still discoverable, was sent.to thecounty jail for vagrancy.. Five ycars ; ago she. was a . 'school teacher in a small town in the State of Michigan.' She was pretty, educated, and' •captivating in,manners. But she had an unr ' controllable -passion for dress', and was one day detected in the act of stealing a costly silk, frpm the counter of the village store,—* . She Was aiTcstcd, but under promise of leav ing the village, nevermore to return, she was • sparcd.fhe pain and mortification of a public . trial for larcony. 'She traveled West, aud cn-J countered a Southern planter somewhere on I the route, who employed her as a governess in his family. She accompanied him to his home in the far South, where she- succeeded in captivating him, causing his wife to sue for a divorce. v After thoroughly ruining, the planter, and scandalizing his friends, she eloped with a light mulatto, the mos£ valuable servant in the planter’s coHectidn'; and went to St. Louis. sick of the mulatto, she sold him for $2OOO. She is next heard of as man ageress and leading actress of.a.strolling the atrical company in the interior of Missouri, playing star .parts upon the stage, and ‘doing’ susceptible grain merchants off.. The, St. Louis papers last Spring contained numerous reports of her dashing swindle along the Mis souri river., . She ran a wild race in Chicago, and brought up in Bridewell, where she ser , Ved out a short sentence for theft. She reach ed Cleveland in the course of time, hopelessly dissipated and shattered. [C7* The story of the airs put on "by a spry . young lady because her father, a; worthy blacksmith in the Western part of Pennsylva nia,. had “struck ilo,” suggests an editorial in ' the Hartford Courant, on the way popple “ show off'’ when they get rich.. We clip a paragraph: When a man has struck He himself, by his own. perseverance and indus try, we like, to see him use it well, and if ne cessary, even for his own enjoyment. But we Want to see him bring up his children as he was brought up himself, to, work. \ Let them be taught to use their own perseverance and) industry and strike He for' themselves.— It .will be : of more use to their characters and future destiny than if ‘ Dad’ had ‘ struck’ it for them. Every one who treads God’s earth, and breathes God air, should "feel it to be a duty to make the world better for having lived in it—to be of some use in his day and generation. Let every one. labor with his mind, if ho does not with his.hands. It is a siii and shame for stalwart men and women to fold up their hands and sit idle, merely because ‘ Dad has struck He,’ ” The Right Kind of a Noise.-— Rigid disci plinarians in the army are often annoyed by the religious zeal of Christian. soldiers, but great ’Generals like Cromwell and Welling ton, know how to turn their zeal to, good ser vice. Here .is a.characteristic anecdote of Gen. Jackson: An officer once complained to Gen. Jackson that some, soldiers were making a noise in their tent. “What are they doing?” asked the Gene ral. “ They arc praying- now, but have been singing,” was the reply. “And is that a crime?” the General de manded: “.The. articles'of war order punishment foi any unusual noise,” was the reply. “ God forbid that praying should be an un usual noise in my camp,” said General Jack son, with much feeling, and advised' the offi cer to join with them. There is an old proverb which declares that none can tell where the shoe pinches save he that wears it. The maxim has a thousand applications. A. husband who appears to have found his wife a good deal loss of an an gel’than he had imagined in the daj's of his courtship, lets out some domestic secrets in the following graphic manner: I own that she has charming locks That on her shoulders full; .What would you say to aco the lox In which eho keeps thorn all ? • Her taper fingers, it is true, . Are difficult to match; I wish, my friend, you only knew How terribly they scratch / "Singular Effect of an • T feP° rtla " d C-oien'er iB informed on tlnTmoTtl reliable authority, of a most singular and un preoedented circumstance which took place in connection with the late earthquake. A mar ried woman residing not a thousand miles fi'om Yarmouth, in this State, but whose hws h'and has been absent about two years, was de livered of a healthy and sprightly child, short ly after the shook. ■ Italian.and American Skies. —Arthur, in ills work on Italy, says: “ After nil that we say of tin Italian sky, it is not equal to that of Egypt; nor to that of many purls of America. The most ravishing dome of liluo sky my eyes ever looked upon, was from Mt. Auburn, near Boston; and the most exquisite sunrise was over the waters of Lake Brio, between Buffalo and .Niagara.” I.
