From the Democratic Union , THE SELF-CONVICTED CONGRESSMEN. ' The spectacle presented by Scranton and their associates last Friday, was humiliating to every honorable American; for half a dozon of the chosen representatives of .the nation, virtually acknowledged themselves to have been hypocrites and liars. And the theatre in which tho gentlemen hove exhibited themselves in so disgraceful an aspect was the Ilall of the House pf Bopresentntivcs,. and the drama in which they were actors, is one which is watched with intense anxiety by this Con tinent, and with groat interest by the civilized world. Seven weeks, and longer, a number of the Opposition of tho North have loudly , proclaimed their readiiless to assist in electing Speaker some sound opponent of the Demo ' oracy, who should not be distinctively known as Republican and endorser of Helper’s book. They were even willing to vote for Mr. Gilmer, the largest slaveholder in tho body, and an advocate of the Territorial slave code. Time and again they cast scattering votes for differ ent members of the South American party, simultaneously ridiculiug tho Democracy for not following their example. Said they,“you Democrats are constantly denouncing Mr. Sherman, the Republican, candidate, for hav ing endorsed the Helper book and the most ultra doctrines ■ of the irrepresssibie school; . you declare that his election would bo .a na tional calamity and tho first toiling of the bell ~ for tho dissolution of the Union; come, then, and unite with us in electing.a known friend of the South and tho Union.” Some, a largo / number, of tho Democrats, did vote for differ ■ ent. South Americans, but not' sufficient to elect, whereupon tho whole Republican pack charged the Democracy with preventing an organization, with perpetuating discord, with insincerity in.their declaration <Jf willingness tfc assist in defeating Sherman by tho election of any sound National man. By frequent repetition, and frequent voles given in this sense, Morris and his associates gained consid erable credit, and many really come to believe that there are conservative men among the Northern Opposition, who are not desirous of . insulting the South by making Sherman Speaker. To add to ’ this impression, even men like Thaddeus Stevens would now and then cast a vote for Gilmer.. And they really imparted this odor of Nationality to their Re publicanism, and placed the Democracy in tho attitude of a factious resistance.. But the De mocrats knew the impudent dissemblers with whom they had to deal, and waited patiently, for an opportunity to entrap their brazen-faced ’ opponents into one really patriotic act. After various attempts, Mr. Smith, of North Caroli na, was put in nomination ; a most Unexcep tionable man, and occupying precisely that position which most perfectly antagonized that of John Sherman/ He does not belong to any livingpolitical organization, for ho isallenry Clay Whig. He is simply and . eminently a • representative of tho lofty patriotism and . broad nationality of tho 'former leader and idol of the great Whig party. Nor has Wm. N. H. Smith ever belonged to any organiza tion . other, than tho now disbanded forces which Clay and Crittenden, Webster and. Everett once marshalled, so that in his inde pendent attitude, as. Whig, patriot and con servative, he should have received the vote of every foe to the treasonable programme of Helper, and ■ Seward. Nationalism against sectionalism, patriotism against titmson, Smith against Sherman, was tho issue distinctly pre sented, and Morris, Scranton and company voted for’.Smith with tho belief that they would have the Credit without there being the slightest danger of an election. . But to their astonishment, the Democrats, so soon as it ■was seen that they could elect a National Whig,'wheeled into lino, proving that they hold patriotism above party. Then these hy pocritical.tools of Republicanism showed the stuff of which they are made. They deliber ately "backed out of their position, prevented the election of a man jhey had" pretended to support, and cast thoir votes for Northern men. Now it was apparent to the House and country, that these protended conservatives have been acting a lie during the whole time that they pretended-to be desirous of electing any sound conservative opponent of the Ad ministration. By changing their votes, they virtually acknowledge that they have been practising a deceit upon the American people. They stand convicted of constructive false hood each day committed in the hall of "the American Congress. We say this, with sor row, of men elected to the honorable position of National Representatives., For in stullify . ing and disgracing themselves they disgrace the nation; for in unveiling their own perfidy they discover a dangerous sore upon the body politic: That sore is the one hideous and alarming fact that all the Opposition Con gressmen from the North, whether known as -Americans, Republicans, People’s Party, or Opposition, are averse to electing any man Speaker who comes from a slavoholding State. When they make a pretente of nationality, by voting for a Southerner, that vote is a lie, and without exception, whatever declarations they make, the whole opposition of the North are pressing oh the conflict of sections. When they will not vote for an old-lino Whig, who has had the fortune to be born south of Mason and Dixon’s Lino, is not fair to presume that, in them, the spirit of the Union is alreadv dead? ■ Hoc Killing. —A Cincinnati correspondent Has visited one of the. Cincinnati slaughter Bouses. He says: From the cars the hogs are transferred to the pons, and then the killing Begins. In a pen about eight feet, square, as many hogs are packed as can, possibly stand- Over the backs of these a huge fellow strides with a hammer having a long handle, and with this he hits the hog upon the skull. One blow is suffi cient; a faint squeal, a shiver and all is over. The hog does not fall; he cannot fall; he is wedged up by living hogs. Sometimes the one blow is not sufficient, and the Bute liSr strikes until one can hear the thick skull sinking with a “ thud” under the blow. . So soon, ns he finishes his pen, the door is thrown open and heavy villains, white, yellow and block, drag out the yet quivering bodies, cut the throats and tumble them in the vat of boiling water. It may be the bubbling water —it may bo 'the agitation caused by the heavy Bodies being thrown in and pulled out—but one seems to see the death shivers yet on the wretched animals. From this vat they are dragged' by hooks on the long- bench, where sharp glittering knives scrape off the hair. Again they arc seized, swung up and cleaned. “A hog can bo killed and cleaned in one minute," said my friend. “ Let us time one." The butcher selected a huge fellow and gave ? ut ono blow. In an instant he was rolled yet quivering into the boiling vat. . To our horror he righted up, and with a dismal Bcnam; swam in the boiling water. The bru te! butcher gave utterance to a roar of laugh ter. Your poor correspondent turned sick— but as a comforter, .wbb assured that tins was a common occurrence. X have not tasted pork SEVEN FOOLS.
