.. :.: . THE BREEZE IN THE CHURCH. >Xwas a sunny day, and the morning paalm Wo sang in the'church together j Wo felt in our lioarls (ho joy and calm , - Of the ca.'m and joyous weather. -Thoslow, the sweet, and sacred strain, . Through every bosom stealing,” Check’d every thought that was light and vain, And waked each holy tooling. We know by its sunny gleam how clear .. Was the blue sky smiling o’er us, And in every pause of the hymn could hear The wild bird’s happy chorus. And lo! from the haunts by caVo or rill .With a sundon start awaking, A breeze came fluttering down the hill, . Its fragrant pinions shaking. Through tho open windows it bent its way, And down the chancel’s centre, Like a privileged thing thatat will migh stray, •, And in holy places outer. From niche to niche, from nook lo nooa, :' With a lightsome rustic flying. It lifted tho leaves of tho Holy Book, On tho alter cushion lying. It fann’d tho old clerk’s hoary hair, • And the children’s bright young faces ; Then vanish’d, none .know how or where, , Leaving its pleasant traces. It left sweet thoughts of summer hours Spent on tho quiet mountains; And the church seemed full of the scent of flowers, And tho trickling (all of fountains. 'The imago of scones so stilfknd fair Witli our music sweetly blended, While it seemed their whispered byrau took / share ■ln the praise that to heaven ascended. - 'tfe thought oftlim who had pour’d the rills, And 'through the green mountains led them. Whose band, when He piled the enduring hills, - With a mantle of beauty spread them. And a purer passion was borne above. In a louder anthem swelling, As we bow’d to the visible spirit of love. On those calm summits dclling. A Scene from Beal Life, There is many'a:.life scene more touching, more worthy of, immortality than the deeds of conquerors or the heroes of history. The fol ■ lowing from the St.,Louis Republican, is one: ■We saw last evening,-an apt illustration of the affection of a woman. A poor inebriated wretch had been taken to the calaboose. Ills conduct in the street, and after he had been ta . ken to the cell, was of such a violent character that it became necessary to handcuff hiin. The demon rum had possession of his soul, and he gave vent to his, ravings in curses so profane as to shock the sense of his fellow prisoners', one of whom, in the same cell, at his own, solicita tion, was placed in a separate apartment. . A woman appeared at the grating, and in her hands she had a rude tray. upon which were some slices of brcad.fresh from the hearlh-slono, and other little delicacies for her erring hus band. ' .• ■ She stood at the bar, gazing intently into the thick gloom manacled companion wildly raved. Her voice was low and soft, and as she called his name, its utterance was as plaintive as the melody of a fond and crushed spirit. Tho'lears streamed from her eyes, and there, in the dark house, the abode of the most wretched and de praved, the tones, of her voice found their way intolhat wicked man’s heart, and he knelt in sorrow and in silence before his young injured wife, while his heart found relief in .tears such only as a man can weep. Though the iron his wristsfhe placed his hands.with Ifieir heavy insignltia of degradation, confiden tially aad affectionately upon the brow of his fair companion, and exclaimed—, “Katy, I will try and be a better man.,’ There, upon a rude seat, she had spread the humble meal, which she had prepared with her own hands, and after he had finished she rose to depart, bidding him to becalm and resigned fur her sake, witn the assurance that she would bring a friend to go as his bond, and that she would return and lake him home. And she left him a strong man, with his head dropping On his breast a very coward, humiliated before the weak and tender being whose presence and affliction had stilled the angry passions of his soul. Trne to the , instincts of her love and promise, she did return with ono who went on his bond for his appearance the next morning— with his hand clasped in that of his loving wife,, she led him away a'penitent, and, we trust, a better man. There were those who laughed as that pale, meek woman bore oil her erring husband; but she heeded them not, and her self-sacrificing heart knew or cared for nothing in its holy or heaven-born instinct, but to preserve him whom she'loved with all the devotion of a wife and a woman. ■ Employment. Daniel Webster well says: I say it is employ' ment that makes people happy. This great truth ought never to be forgotten; it ought to be placed upon the title page of every book bn political economy intended for America, and such countries as America. It ought to bead the. columns of farmer’s magazine and I mechanic’s magazine. It should bo proclaimed everywhere—notwithstanding what we hoar of the usefulness, and 1 admit the usefulness of cheap food—notwithstanding that the great truth should be proclaimed everywhere, should be made into a proverb, if it could, that where them is work for the hands of men there will bo work for their teeth. Where there is employ ment there will bo broad; and in a country like our own, above all others will this truth hold good; in a country like ours where with a groat deal of spirit and activity among the masses if they can find employment, there is a great will ingness for labor. If they, can obtain fair com pensation for their labor, they will have good houses,-good clothing, good food, and the means of educating their children from their.labor; that labor wilt be cheerful, and they will bo a contented and happy people. J ‘•llia is a Brick.” —As very many men, and even “fast” women, who use this phrase, know not its origin, we give it for their benefit: ‘•At a duel, a person who was charged with its preliminary arrangements, carried with him to the ground two bricks, which ho placed so as to mark the distance between the combatants. Several shots having taken place without efiect, the partied became reconciled. One ofHhe sec onds being how his principal Tind behav ed, answered, “like a regular brick”—meaning that ho had been as immovable ns that which yras at his feet at thftime when the shots were exchanged- _ O” Mrs. Swishelm denounces kissing at so cial country parties.
