A KISS A 1 BY AMINIDAB STIOOINS. Tho clock struck ten; I seized my hat And bade good night to all, Except tho lass I courted, who - Came with mo through tho hall. Sho stood within tho portal, And I gazed upon hor charms, ATid, oh! I longed that moment To clasp 1 her in my arms. - i Slio spoke about the moon and stars, How oiear and bright they shone ; I said X thought the crops would fail, Unless wo had rain soon. Then I edged a little closer, Put my arms around her waist. And gazed upon those rosy lips, ,1 longod'so much to taste. Said I, my dearest Susy, I’ll never rest contented—- If I leave to-night without a kiss, I’ll snroly grow demented. Thou up she turned her rosy mouth, ■ And everything was handy j Quick from her lips I seized a kiss— Oh, Yankee Doodle Dandy ! • Then offlor homo ! started, , I could no longer stay; With a light heart and breeches thin, - ■ ■ X -whistled all tho way. Hence learn this truth, yo bashful youth. Who seek for wedded bliss, No lnss will love until you move ~Her feollngs : with a kiss. '. . General Ilarc/ocJc upon Family Discipline. 'The following, from one who enjoyed much personal communion with the deceased General, will be regarded as an illustration of the man’s character, not without, significance. During his stay in England the narrator of this anec dote went one, evening to the house of the Colo nel, in compliance with an invitation. In the course of conversation Mrs. Hayelock turned . suddenly to her husband and said, “By the way, my dear, where is Harry referring to her son, whom she had hot seen during the whole afternoon. The Colonel started to his feet—“ Well, poor fellow, he’s standing on London bridge, and in this cold; too. I told him .to wait for me there at twelve o’clock to day,' and in tho pressure of business at—l quite forgot the appointment." The father and son were to have mot at twelve o’clock at noon, and it was now after seven in the evening. Yet the father seemed to have no doubt that Harry would not move from his post until he appear ed. The Colonel at once rose, ordered a cab to he called, and as be went forth to deliver his son from his weary watch on London bridge he turned to his visitor, saying, “ You see, sir, that is the discipline ofa soldicr’s family.” In the course of an hour the Colonel returned with poor Harry, who, although he appeared somewhat affected by tho cold watch, and glad to sec the fire in the, comfortable parlour at home, seemed • to have passed through the little afternoon’s experience with the greatest good humour and the feelling that all. was right. , Edinburg Daily Express. Cures for Cancers. Our attention bas been recently called to a cure lor cancers, which is oi so much import ance, that wo wish to make it known as widely as possible. • Some eight months ago, Mr. T. B. Mason—who keeps a music store on Wiacoh sinstreet—ascertained that he had a cancer on his lace,'of tho size of a pea. It was cut out by Dr. Walcott and tho wound partially hca|cd, — Subsequently it grew again, and while he was in Cincinnati on business,.it attained tho sizs.of. a hickory nut.. He has remained there since Christmas under treatment, and has came back . perfectly cured. The .process is this: . ; A piece of sticking-plaster was put over the cancer, with a/ciroular piooo'cut out of the cen tre a little larger than the cancer, so that tho ■ cancer and a small circular rim of heajjhy skin next to, it worn .exposed-... .Thena.pla of chloride of, zinc, blood-root and wheat flour was spread oh apiece of mushVof-fho size of I this circular opening, and applied to the cancer I for. twenty rfour hours. On removing It (lie can-1 cer will be found to bo burnt into and appear of the color and hardness of an old shoe sole, and the circular rim outside of it will appear, white i and parboiled, ns if scalded by hot steain. The 1 wound is now dressed, and the outside rim soon 1 suppurates and tho cancer comes out a hard f lump, and the place heals up. The plaster kills ( the cancer so that it sloughs but like dead flesh, I and never, grows again. This remedy was dis- t covered by fell, of London; and has been used, i by him for six or eight years, with, unfailing I success,, and not a case has been known ml the .< reappearance of the cancer, where this remedy i has been applied. It lias tho sanction of the most eminent physicians and surgeons of Lon don, but has not till recently, been used in this country, and many of the facility, with their proverbial opposition'to innovations, look upon it with distrust. TYo saw Mr. Mason and have conversed with him and took particular notice of the cicatrized wound, and wo can only say, that if the cure is permanent—and from the evi- , denco of six or eight years experience in other cases, we have no doubt it is—the remedy ought, to bo universally known. Tho experiment ex cited much interest in Cincinnati. If it is what 1 is claimed for it, this terrible disease will be 1 shorn of most of its terrors. The application 1 is painful, but the pain is of comparatively brief ‘ duration, which any one so afflicted would 1 cheerfully endure. —Milwaukee Free Democrat. jET* Arnru:— A timid, blushing maiden, With downcast, tearful eyes, In her hand an opening rose bud Perfumed by dewy sighs, , Oft advancing ; oft retreating. She has won our heart the while, Apd we cannot choose but love her, For her teardrops arid her smilb. O’ A good story is told of a Michigan man who recently drove down to Indiana to buy a drove of horses. He was longerabsent than ho intended, and failed to meet a business engage ment. On being reproached fornot being home, made this explicit apology. “I’ll tell you how it is-squire," said he, “at every darn’d little town they wanted me to stop and. be president of a bank. 07 No family is perfect without a daughter or a sister in it. A dozen of great big broth • ,crs will hot compensate for one soft-eyed, sun ny hearted girl. Such a treasure numbered in the household, has a humanizing tendency, bet ter to a rough, ungainly fellow in boots and whiskers, than two seasons at a dancing school or a year at college. KF” “Governor Gilmer, of Georgia,” says a Georgian contributor, “ had a passion for buy ing old iron truck, broken down wagons, and such rubbish, which ho had piled up in the yard,, under (ho impression that it would come into use some time or other. It his' wife excessive, and one day, when the govern or was away from homo, she bad the whole pile carted olfto auction. It so happened that just os the auctioneer had put up thc-iot, the gover nor was riding by, and buy ho would, for, ns he looked’ at it, lie declared that he bad a lot at home in which there was several things to match. He hid ton dollars, and (ho whole concern was knocked down to him. A few days afterwards, - he was admiring Mrs. Gilmer’s.now bonnet and i asking her its cost, she said, “ ten dollars bus. hand; the same ton you paid for your old iron, and if you don’t dear it out of the yard, I shall •soli it again!” The Governor shortly after that retired from the iron business.
