Drayson, of. the Royal Artillery, entitled “Sporting Scenes among the Kaffirs of South Africa.” li r o extract from it review of it the following amusing-description of an ape family: “I watched -them'through my glass, and.was much amused at their grotesque and almost hu man movements. Some oi the old ladies had their olive .branches in their lips, and appeared to be ‘doing their hair,’ while a patriarchal looking old fellow paced backwards and for wards,-with a fussy sort of look; he was pyi. ■ dflntlyi. on sentry, and seemed to think himself of no small importance. .This estimate of-hia dignity did hot appear to ho universally acknow ledged, as two or throe young baboons sat close behind him, watching bis proceedings. Some times, with the most grotesque movements and expressions, they would stand directly in his path*, and hobble atvay only at the last moment. •One daring youngster followed close on thobools pi the patriarch during the whole length of his beat, and gave a sharp tng at his tail as ho was about to turn. The - old fellow seemed to treat it with the greatest indifference—scarcely turn ving round at the Insult. Master Impudence was about repeating the performance,'wlien the pa ter, showing that ho was not such a fool as ho looked, suddenly sprang round, and, catching the young one before ho could escape, gave him two or three such cuffs that I could hear the screams that resulted therefrom. The vonora .'ble gentleman then chucked the delinquent over his shoulder, and continued his promenade with ■the greatest coolness. The old baboon, ovi. dontly, was acquainted with the practical 'do-- ' tails of Solomon’s proverb. A crowd gathered ' round the naughty child, who, childlike, (see ' jug commiseration,) slniokcd all the louder; I even fancied I could see the. angfy glanoes'of ' the mamma, as she took her dear little pet in her * arms, and removed it from a repetition of such ' brutal treatment.” Common Sense. —The New York Times makes the following sensible remarks:. ‘-If tlio Xocdinpton Constitution should be adopted, and Kansas admitted-as a State, the State Legislature has only to pass adaw-order irtg a new Convention, which shall frame a new- Coristitution in accordance with this popular will. In either case, therefore, if they act wisely and firmly, the Free-State men. of Kan sas have substantial control of their own affairs. If an attempt is made to cheat them of their le gitimate majority in the Legislature by fraudu lent votes, they have the power to defeat the crime and punish the criminals. And if the Ecderal Government should interfere to prevent them from changing their Constitution, they would be justified and sustained in resisting that Government by force of arms.” Mapie Sugar. —Already the papers are call, ing the attention of farmers and other's to the Important and profitable business of making ma. pie sugar. Last-year the amount made had the effect of reducing the price of cane sugar. As the maple is known to be more healthy and when made into molasses more palatable than that from cane, all who have the means of pro ducing it, should give early attention to this branch of spring labor. A Beauriful Extract. —There lies in tho ■depth of every heart that dream of youth and the chastened wish of manhood, which cares nor honors osir ever extinguish—the hope of one - day resting from the pursuits which absorb usj of interposing between old ago and the tomb, some-tranquil Interval of reflection, when, with ftelings not subdued, but softened j with pas. sions npt.oxhansted but mellowed, wo may look calmly on flm past without regret, and on tho future without apprehension. But in tho tumult of the .world, this vision, forever recodes as wo approach it, the passions which have agitated our life disturb our latest hours, and wo go down to tho tomb,' like the sun in the ocean with no gentle and gradual withdrawing of life back to-the source which.
