7T-, 1 DIET AND DIGESTION. :rOTTgt»ffWclglibors tlio French, or rather the philosophers'- among, them, 'have asserted that the perfecting oi. rami and species depends up on attention to diet and digestion; and in a ma terial point of view, they are not far wropg; and, indeed, in a ndn-matdrial point of view, it may bo said that the spirit, without’judgment, is very likely to be exposed to indigestion; and perhaps ignorance •complete is to bo preferred to an ill-digested With diet and pa tience, Walpole thought all diseases of man might bo easily cured.- Montesquieu, on the other hand, held that health purchased'by rig orously watching over diet, was bid a tedious disease. Blit Walpole was nearly correct, while Montesquieu was not very distant from the truth; Dieting,-like other tilings, must bo un dertaken on common-sense principles; for, though there be multitudes of hind people in fho .world, society generally is not to bo put upon the regime of “ Bedlam.” Wo live, not by what wo eat, but by what wo digest; and what one man may digest, another would die of attempting. Buies on this sub ject are almost useless.- Bach man may soon learn the powers of his* stomach, in health or disease, in this respect; and this ascertained, ho has no more business to bring on indigestion than he has to get intoxicated or fall into debt. He who offends on these three points, deserves 46 forfeit stomach, head, and his electoral fran chise! * - Generally speaking, fat and spices resist the digestive power; and too much nutritious food is the next evil to too little. Good cookery, by developing- flavor, increases tho nutritiousness of food, which bad cookery would perhaps ren der indigestible. Hence, a good cook rises to the dignity of “artist.” He may rank with tho chemists; if not with the physicians. Animal food, of mild quality, is more diges. liblo than vegetable, and fresh meats are prefer, able to salted. • In the latter, tho salt is a differ ent composition from that which is taken at meals,.and which is indispensable to health.— Fish fills rather than feeds; but there are ex ceptions to this. Vegetables are accounted as doing little to maintain stamja; but there have been races and, classes of men wiio have been heroes upon bread, fruit, and vegetables. The poor cannot live upon “ curry,” it is true; but in England, with loss drink and more vegetable food, they would' be an improved face. Not that they could live like a Lazaroni, on macron! and tho open air. Layard says the Bedouin owes his. health and strength to his spare diet. BiU even a Bedouin swallows lumps of butter till ho becomes billions ; and were ho to live in England instead - of tho / desert, he would not keep tip his strength by living on the dishes which supported him in Arabia Felix. The golden rule is “ moderation and regularity.”— He who Irarisgressos.the rule, will pay for it by prose’nt suffering:and a “check” after Christ. mas. - ; -. A (also hunger ouglit not to. be soothed, nor false thirst to bo satisfied; fo'rsatisfaction hero is only adding fuel to a fire that would other wise go out. On the other hand tho bilious and. sedentary man need not be afraid of beer; it is a better stomachic than wine. For him and all the lords of that heritage of wob, a weak sto mach, t lie common-sense system of cookery, as it is called, is most required. It is something between the hard, crude system of tho English, and tho juice-extracting method of the'Frenchj with a loaning, however, towards tho latter, (with whom it is common to reduce, (odd to a condition of pulp,) by uniting with it so ranch of the English custom as allows the gelatinous matter' to bo retained, especially in tho meats. ■ <‘Festina r lente,”, 'is “Latin de cuisine,” for “Eat slowly,” and it is of first value. He who does so, gives best chance for healthy chyle j and that wanting, I should like to know whore the post-prandial enjoyments would be. 'Without it digestion is-not; and when digestion .is away, Death' is always peering about to profit by his absence. “See to it I” as tho Chinese ‘fcliop” says. There are upwards of seventeen hundred works extant ou the subject of diet, and digest flop. Sufferers may study tho question till they are driven mad by doubt and dyspepsia, and difference of opinions among the doctors. For dyco saw no use in tho salvia, arid Paris main tains that without it digestion is not. “ Quot homines, lot sentential,” is as applicable hero as in every oilier vexed question. But Paris’s book: on Diet is the safest guide I know for a man who, being dyspeptic wants to cure hini seif, or simply to discover tho doflnoment of his degree of suffering. On the other hand, oveiy man- m a}' find comfort in’’reflection, that with early hours, abundant exorcise, generous diet, but not too much of; it, occupation—without which a Worse devil than the former enters on possession of the victim—dyspepsia cannot as surnh a Chronic form. It may he a casual visi tor, but it will be tho easiest thing possible to got rid of him. But philosophy has saidas much..'from the beginning, and yet dyspepsia prevails and physicians ride in carnages. Ex actly! and why ? Because pbilosaphers them, solves, like the Stoic gentleman in Marmontel, after praising simplicity of living, sink to sloop, on heavy, suppers and beds of down, with the suicidal remark, that “/e luxe est unejolie chose. ’ Wo must neither act unreservedly on the dic tum of books, nor copy slavishly tho examples of others, if we would have the digestion ina healthy condition. There is a self monitor.that may. safely be consulted. Of his existence there can bo no doubt; for every man who wakes with a headache most ungratefully blariies that same monitory “self.” —Dr. Doran. Telling Truths. —Women arc never satis fied. If a man is jealous, they cry out against his tyranny ;.if he is not jealous, chey cornplain of his indifference. A man ceases to bc a "good fellow” (he moment he refuses to do precisely what othcrpcoplo wish him to do. Tell a wom an, that she is a flirt, and she will laugh ; that she is ugly ; and she will get angry ; but just hint that she is growing old, and'she will never for give you. Self-love is love with two bandages over its eyes instead of one. A-man marries generally to leave society—a woman to enter it. Those who live only for appearances gener erally end in making one in the insolvent court. Many a man talks with loud complacency about the charm of his fireside, and yet,-let temptation give but the smallestatnp at the door; and he evinces the most wonderful alacrity in leaving it. Satire is a dangerous acid, which none but the most skilful should presume to manipulate. Many a clumsy hand at it has been blown lo pieces by the explosion ofitsown retort-— Punch. Co-Operation op the Wipe. —There is much good sense and truth in the”remark of a moder.n author, that no man over prospered in the world without the co-operation of his wife. If she unites 1n mutual endeavors, or rewards his labor with an. endearing smile, with that confidence will he resort to his merchandize or his farm, fly over lands, sail over seas, meet difficulty and encounter danger—if he knows that he is not spending his strength in vain, but that his labor will bo rewarded by the sweets of home! Solitude and disappointment enter the history of'every man's life, and he has not half provided for his voyage, who finds hut an asso ciate for happy hours, while for months of dark ness and distress,' ho sympathizing partner is prepared. ■ Tub Medicine op LAiiGnTEn.—“lt is recor ded of Dr. Griffin, (says a writer in the ‘Atlan tic,’) that, when President of the Andover The ological Seminary, ho,convened 1 the students at bis room one evening, and told'them he had ob served that they were all growing thin and dys peptical from a neglect of the exercise ol Chris tion laughter, and he insisted upon it that they they should go through a company-drill in it then and there. The doctor was an immense man—over-six feet in height, with great ampli tude of chest, and most magisterial manners.— ‘Here,’said he to. the first,‘you must prac tice; now hear me!’ and bursting out into a sonorous laugh, he-fairly obliged, his pupils, one by one, to join) till -the whole were almost convulsed. ‘ That will do for once. ’ said the doctor, ‘and now mind.you keep in practice !’ ” Hone- —We talk of the rewards of an ap proving conscience, but it seems a little hard to devote one’s life to labors of love, and receive no more palpable compensation. He who has a home, ever so humble, if it be the garner of af fection, may defy the changes and chances of the outward world.—Alice Cliffy. fi'tsh Arrival! Fancy Goods, Gift Books, &c. SW.
