SOME GOOD IN All; In every breast there is a well of fcoliqc, Whoso depths are moved at an appointed time. Disclosing precious jewels, and revealing Love, Hope, ahd Faith, or Energy sublime. The heart ot every sinful man containeth / 1 A hallowed spot, as pure as childhood’s dream; Which, ’mid the poison round It, still rotainelh Some crystal drop from Truth’s eternal stream The tear of penitence, the sigh of sorrow,“ The agony of spul for life misspent, The promise of improvement for the morrow, Are all to Heaven on Mercy’s pinions sent. The heart beneath a smiling mash may smother Its anguish, though by fiercest trials torn; Then Judge not harshly of thine erring brother— God only knows the sorrows ho has borne.' A Royal Latly. Oar lady readers will be interested in the fol lowing description of the English Princess Roy al, Victoria’s eldest daughter, from the pen of a correspondent of an Aberdeen journal: - With the remembrance, as if had been yes terday. of the boom of the guns which an nounced her birth, I was scarcely prepared to And her a full grown woman, taller by a coup le of inches than her mother, and carrying her self with the case and grace of womanhood.— It is no stretch of loyalty or courtesy to call the Princess Royal pretty. She is perfectly lovely. The regularity of her features is per fect. Her oyes are large and full of intelli gence, imparting to her face that sort of merry aspect which indicates good humor. The nose and mouth are delicately and exquisitely form ed, the latter giving the effect of great sweet ness. The Princess is more like her father than her mother. She is like the Queen in nothing but her nose. In all other respects she is a fe male image of her father. I should add, as in teresting to your lady readers, that she wears her hair slightly oil her forehead : not pushed back in the Eugenie fashion, but-brushed iati tudely from the temples, and raised at the side above the ear in bandeaus (really tlie ladies must excuse roe if I am talking nonsense, for I have not given that hostage to fashion which could enable me to speak ex cathedra.) Well,, at any rale, the Princess is fair enough to be the heroine el a fairy tale, and the Prince Fred erick should consider himself a lucky fellow. 1 Polite Boy, The other day we were riding in crowded, cars. .At one of the stations an old gentleman entered, and was looking around Him for a seat, when a lad ten or twelve years of age rose up, 'and said, “ take my seat,.sir.” The offer was accepted and the infirm old man sat down. — “Why did you give uie your sent ?” he inquir. ed of the boy, “Because you are old, sir, and I am a boy,” was the quick reply. The passen gers were very much pleased and gratified.— For my part, I wanted to seize hold of the little fellow and press him- to my bosom. It was a respect for age which is always praiseworthy. .When a boy or girl docs not reverence the aged, it is a sure sign that they are evil in more respects than one. We once saw a lad run af ter a lame old .man in the street, and hoot at him, but he was known as one of the worst lads in the village, lie would swear and disobey, his parents, and do' other things equally bad. — We,feel quite sure that the polite boy in the cars never uses wicked or vulgar words. His parenU probably, can trust him. One thing more. Doubtless every passen ger in the cars felt that the little gentleman, who gave the old man a scat, was well instruc ted at home. They thought of his mother per haps, and concluded that -she might be good and watchful. Some of them might have envi ed her the possession of such a. son. Candy and Poison: A paper on ‘‘Colored Confectionary” was recently read before the British Association at Montreal, from which is condensed the follow ing valuableand novel information: / It appears that, for economy’s sake, confcc- Binaries, in coloring their candies, &c., have recourse lor their greens to Brunswick green, carbonate of copper, or arsenite of copper; for the.peilows, to chromate of lead or gamboge; for their reds, to red lead, vermilloin, or cinn bar; and for their whites, to white lead. These are only a few of the pernicious coloring agents used, and they arc among the deadliest of’ poi sons. The way in which the poisons are laid on also deserves a word of passing remark. In some instances a very thin coating of the color ed matter is used, so as to spread over a very large surface h small, portion of the material used ; but in other oases the very reverse is the 1 facti and in one instance was procured from a piece of ornamental table Conteclionary not the' size of a sugar almond a quantity of arsenite of copper sufficient to destroy the life of a heal thy adult. Confectioners have no reasons to use these poisons, for there are harmless vege table colors enough to answer their purposes. Ball Room Talk.—A good story is (old of a Bostonian's first appearance in polite society in Arkansas. The company were engaged in dan cing; but the loveliest female-present occupied a chair at the window;, withoutaVartner. Step ping up to the lady, with a palpitating heart, his mind greatly excited for fear of refusal, he exclaimed —“Will you do me the honprto grace we with your company for thenext set ?” Her lustrous eyes shone with unwonted brilliancy, her white pearly teeth glistened in the flickering candle light, her heavy, snowy bosom rose ami fell with joyful rapture, as she replied—“ Yes 8 r-ec! for I have sot, and sot, and sot, till I have about! root Gettiho over a Dirricur.TV.— A class which graduated not over a thousand years ago, em braced among its members one Tom Elliott, an incorrigible wag, who was not noted lor any particular and marked attention to his studies. Mathematics was a particular object Of Tom’s -disregard, and this caused him an occasional jm d’ esprit with the dry- professor of conics. On one occasion, the forfqssor, during the reci tation, asked Tom to explain the horizontal pa rallax of the sun. Tom replied i “I don’t know how.’’ “But,’’ said the professor, “suppose you were appointed by the government to ascertain it what would you do?” , “I’d resign,’? gravely responded Tom, amid the convulsive laughter of the class, and even the professor actually perpetrated a grin. His Feet Supped Beneath Him.—A new sensation novel has the following capital climax, t is good : I really dear to yon, Sophia 1 I whis pered, and pressed my burning lips to her rosy mouth. She did not say yes :■ she ,did not say no; but.she returned my hiss: my soul was no longer in the body; I touched the stars: I knew the ..happiness of the seraphim ; and the earth went from under my feet! AWaunino to Slanderers —The legal pus ishment lor slander in Orange county, IT. V., in rather severe, though occasionally just enough. It appears that some three months ago, a.woman having a husband and family, goaded to despe ration by a man who boasted that he was her paramour, publicly shot him with a pistol, the bullet knocking out several of the follow’s tectji, and inflicting a severe wound. She was indict ed for ah assault and battery with intent to kill, and tried at Orange County Court last week.— The jury after an hour’s absence, returned a verdietof acquittal, which was received with 'gnat applause. jrr Do you keep nails here ?" asked a sleepy looking lad, walking into a hardware store, the other day. “Yes,’ > replicd the proprietor, “wekeepall kinds of nails; what kind will you biwe.»««V»nd how many ?” “Well.” said the boy. sliding towards the “1111 take a pound of Anger nails and fthout a pound and a half of toe nails.” [Exit boy, with the toe of a well nailed bool following close in'his rear, j FrcslrArrlval J Fancy Goods, Gift Books, &o.
