Ttiz reception extended to Gen. Grant, on the occasion of his visit to Chicago last week, was on an extensive scale. He was received by the members of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, which had met in the morning, and also by the city officers, military and civic organizations, and citizens of all parties. The procession which escarted the General to the Palmer House, and was there reviewed by him, oc cupied more than two hours in passing a given point. There was a dense throng along the route, which loudly applauded Generals Grant, Sherman and Sheridan. After the review Gen. Grant was formally welcomed by Mayor Harrison and made an appropriate reply. He will find it a hard busi ness to cause a resurrection in that politi cal graveyard. As stated by us lust week, the entire Republican ticket in New York, except State Engineer, was elected at the recent election. This result fixes the Empire State for the Republican nominee for President in the battle of 1880. THE Democrats in Maine are trying to steal both branches of the Legislature from the Republicans, and in order to do so the Democratic Governor and the Demo cratic Council threaten to throw out a sufficient number of recently elected mem_ bers to accomplish their fraudulent inten tions. Grant's visit to Chicago, last week, prominent Southern men sent congratulatory messages, but it was re served for Robert Toombs, of Georgia, a leading Democrat and an unhung traitor, to show to the world that he is a cool and a traitor of the deepest dye. He sent the following: "Your telegram received. I decline to answer, except to say, present my personal congratulations to General Grant on his safe return to his country. He fought for his country honorably, and won. I fought for mine, and lost. lam ready to try it over again. Death to the Union :" ONE of the Haber murderers, in Lebanon county, Geo. It will be re membered that at the former trial Zech man, together with the other five fiends, was convicted and sentenced to be hanged, but a new trial was granted him with the above result. Two of his accomplices, Drews and Stichler, paid the penalty of their crime on the scaffold on Friday last. Three others of thd gang remain to be dis- posed of. ON Friday last Gov. Crosswell, of Mich igan appointed Fernando C. Beaman United States Senator to fill the unexpired term of Hon. But worse than this; it is the in dex of a disordered liver, of a liver that needs aroi.sing and regulating. The remedy is at hand, prompt, efficacious. A course of lios Letter's Stomach Bitters will expel the mis directed bilk from the blood and divert it into the proper channel, open the bowels, remove the dyspeptic symptoms which invariably ac company biliousness and counteracts the rap idly developing tendency to dangerous con gestion of the liver, which must aways exist when the skin and whites of the eyes assume this yellow hue. The pains through the right IJwer ribs, side and shoulder blade, the nausea, furred state of the tongue, and unpleasant breath which indicate liver complaint, in short all its disagreeable concomitants are soon remedied by this sovereign corrective, which in addition to its regulating properties is a superb invigorant, and a pure and agree able medicinal stimulant, appetizer and .ner vice. THE PASTOR AND TILE GOBBLER There were, and are, and will be towns, Which needed, need, and will need teaching ; Where pastors were, and are, and will be Installed to do the people's preaching. There was, and is, a town existing With people in it, well intentioned, Who kept, and keep, a worthy man As pastor, for the purpose mentioned. W nene'er on duties, he descants, If pure benevolence he tea.ch3s By gifts, his hearers prove that Meg Are pleased to practice what he p, rack , v. One of the parish sent one morn— A farmer kind and able— A nice fat turkey, raised on corn, To grace the pastor's table. The farmer's lad went with the fowl, And thus addressed the pastor : "Blame me if I ain't tired! Here's A gobbler from my master!" The pa tor said: "Thou should'st no: thus Present the fowl to me ; Come! take my chair, and for me ac', And I will act for thee." The preacher's chair received the boy, The fowl the preacher took— Went out with it, and then came in, With pleasant smile and look ; And to his young pro tem, he said : "Dear Sir, my honored master Presents this turkey, and his best Respects to you his pastor." "Good!" said the boy ; "your master is A gentleman and scholar; My thanks to him, and, for your,ll Here is a half a dollar !" The pastor felt around his mouth A most peculiar twitching, And, to the obbler holding fast, He "bolted" for the kitchen. He gave the turkey to the cook, And came back in a minute, Then took the youngster's hand and left A half a dollar in it The boy's good sense, the fifty cents, And preacher's sense of duty Made the affair quite sensibie, And rife with moral beauty. The lad into his money box, The fifty cents let fall, He saved enough, and bought a suit At the famous TOWER HALL. The pastor saw him in his clothes, So neatly, finely dressed, And hurtled off to TOWER HALL His money to invest. Then all the parish followed snit, And every man was suited !
