A flock of well grown turkeys make such an agreeable addition to the receipts of the farm, and are often raised with so little trouble. that I wonder at the seem- ing indiiTerence of so many flriners with reference to them. The rules fill- brced ing are simp!e and easy understood, and failures are due to two prominent causcs,s— one, the weather, which, in some seasons, puts at fault the utmost possible care; the other negligence A hbt and dry season is well nigh au essential for success with turkeys. This is so important that it is of little use to be in haste to get turkeys hatched early, as we may do with chickens; though old birds are tough enough, young cues exceeding ly tender. If brought out by the first of June, it will, in most cases, be early enough. Even if they live through such chilly and damp weather as is common in May, they will not grow much until hot weather and bugs come to their relief but let them hatch out in June, in weath er which drives the breeder to the shade, and little turkeys just enjoy it; they will stretch themselves in the sun and "lay off" with every token of delight. Damp, chil ly weather is their ruin ; rain abomination; morning dew a poison sure to blight the hopes of unexperienced or careless breeders. Turkeys must be allowed to range very freely to insure success, but not while the grass is wet—that is, during the first two months or so of their lives. After that one need not be quite so particular. Early turkeys not being advisable, the first litter of eggs from a hen may be re served for a common hen in May, and the turkey hen be invited to lay a second lit ter, which she will do if broken up. I think the earliest turkeys do better in any ease with a common hen as she roams less and the chicks become more tractable, and females from among them make more manageable mothers Clr the next year.— Rural florid. Red Wash for Brick Residence Travelers visiting Chicago are astonish ed at the beautiful appearance of thebrick buildings in that city showing so distinct ly the lines of white mortar between the bricks. It has taken years of trial, says the Enquirer, before a mixture could be found that would stand the test of rain and frost. At last the following has giv en thorough satisfaction. Venetian red and Paris brown, in proportion to suit the taste, are mixed with a quantity of water to make a heavy wash. With this the walls are well coated. To settle the color to the wall and prevent its washing off by the rain, a wash with diluted inuri atic acid (one-quarter acid) given over the painted surface- The mixture forming the white lines or joints is made of settled white lime, to which is slowly added plaster of Paris, kept stirring until the mixture is past set ting; then mix a little fine sand, to keep from cracking, and work into the consist ence of glazier's putty. This putty is then applied to the walls by two men, along a straight edge, and with a beading trowel, the distance of the joints having been previously measured. Care should be taken, in applying this putty, to press it strongly against the wall, to prevent any water creeping between it and the brick. In winter time we should suppose that the water would freeze, expand, and detach the white joint, thus spoiling the looks of the building. But it is impor tant if the treatment above described proves effectual. It is certainly worth trying, fur an indestructible red and white paint on brickwork is very beautiful. Farm Horses. Perhaps there is no animal on the farm more indispensable than the horse of all work—to plough, to mow, to rake, to go to mill, or meeting on Sunday, or the do ing of other things quite too numerous to mention—when Dobbin must be harness• ed, notwithstanding we have the declara tion of Holy Writ that "A horse is a vain thing for safety." How to breed horses that combine good work qualities is a question that deeply concerns farmers, and one that should be more thoroughly and skillfully discussed in our agricultural journals. While colun.ns are filled with the art of breedieg trotters and runners, little is said of the art of breeding such horses as we have described above, or in other words, the horse of ail work, the kind of horses that all farmers want, must and will have, if there be skill enough de veloped in the art of breeding to produce them; and if not, to demand it forthwith, for then it will be forthcoming ; for that demand creates a supply, is a law in the world of commerce. Shall we hear from our numerous readers and contributors on this very important subject—something that is practical and shall tend to diffuse light where darkness now so universally prevails ?—E.c. LINIMENT FOR HORSES. — A corespond ent say s: Some time ago I was a good deal worried with a couple of horses which had sore backs. I tried various remedies without success, and was beginning to despair, when the following receipt came to my notice : "The inner bark of white oak bark boiled down in an iron kettle (never use a brass) until it is as black as ink ; while boiling drop in a piece of al. nmn about the size of a hen's egg." This liniment is to be applied with a sponge, and is good for any sore or bruise; in fact it is a safe thing to keep in one's barn ready for use when occasion requires. As I found this so useful I venture to send it for the benefit of others who may not be in possession of anything as good. FLANNEL CAKE.-Mix three table spoonfuls of flour with one pint of cream ; add two eggs, and beat the whole well till quite smooth ; then add slowly half a pint of new milk, into which has been put a teaspoonful of baking powder. Beat all well together, and fry with lard, a little of which should be made hot for each cake. Eat with powdered sugar, mixed with cin namon-or grated nutmeg. Dr. Swayne's •Medicines TO AJ4T ! DR. Why do they not act as men of uprightness and fairness would do, ac knowledge equality of goods, and by try ing to undersell us, compel people to buy of them ? But they seem to have forgot ten, if they ever knew it, that the straight path is the best, and instead they choose to follow the path of crookedness, with its natural consequences of falsehood, and blindness to all that common sense dic tates. We are astonished to hear a man talk of shoddy trash who advertises one of the necessities of life, namely calico, one of the commonest trashes (to use his refin ed expression) the universe can boast of. It has been remarked to us that a man who offers the best Madder prints, an arti cle which would be easily mistaken for a poor imitation of cobweb, must be either a knave, or a fool, or both.
