Strange Substances in a Horse's Stom- ach. Somewhat over a year ago Mr. Henry Bennethum, stove dealer, of Reading, was compelled to kill a horse, which had been under medical treatment for some time, suffering with unknown disease. A post. mortem examination was made, and there we're found in the stomach and intestines of the animal a number of stones of differ ent shape, of a calcarious nature, and ex ceedingly hard, which had been worn smooth and become highly polished by constant attrition. how the stones came chere was a subject of much conjecture. By many, it was supposed that they had been mixed with the hay or feed and swal. lowed by the animal accidently. The composition of the stones, however, explo• ded that theory and the matter remained as much of a mystery as ever. More recently about a peck of stones. of the size of turnips, bearing a close resem blance to that vegetable, were found in the intestines of a horse by Mr. Daniel Levan, city scavenger, of Reading. These were supposed by some to have been petrified turnips, although a subsequent examina tion of them showed that they must have formed inside of the stomach in small lumps which gradually increased, harden ed, and finally found their way into the intestines causing death. To show that these phenomena are not the only ones of the kind that have been discovered in this country, we produce the following taken from the Troy (N. Y.) Press. John Brown, superintendent of the Troy and Lansingburg horse railroad, has in his possession two specimens of nr.tural phenomena which our scientists would do well to examine, and, if possible, render some lucid explanation of. One is a large round stone having the appearance of a highly polished piece of marble mottled in appearance and beautiful in color. It is as hard as flint, and exceedingly difficult to scratch or mar, iu any .way, and weighs one and one-half pounds. 'This was taken from the intestines of a horse that died some time ago, and is probably formed from secretions of dirt and dust that had gathered in the stomach of the animal and which by the process of time had become formed and hardened into this beautiful semblance of polished marble. It has pass ed from the stomach, and in its passage through the intestinal channels had lodged and caused the animal's death. Another more singular still in its shape and forma tion, was taken from the intestines of a horse that died at Cohces last week• This curiosity is as large as a man's clenched fist, and has the appearance of a calcarious substance. Ia size, shape, and general appetiranoe it resembles a petrified sponge. This also caused the animal's death in the same manner as the preceding. The only theory advanced thus far in the :explana tion of this stone is, that at some time the horse had swallowed a piece of sponge, and in time had petrified. Questions and Answers. When land has been reduced by crop ping, which is the best means of restoring its fertility Y Clover furnishes a popular means. Fer- tility grows by covering this kind of land with a thick sod and filling the eoil with roots. What are the leading characteristics of :be box alder ? It ‘ is easily grown, of quick growth, is hardy, indigenous, and is equally good for wind breaks and for timber. Can refuse hair from tanneries he utili zed with profit on a farm ? Yes, it is a valuable fertilizer. The hair is usually mixed with lime; when spread broadcast this produces an immedi ate effect, though the action of the hair is slow, The best results are obtained from this refuse when is is poured in or mixed with the soil. It greatly increases the fer tility of dairy farms, is said to ba prefera ble to barnyard manure for turnips, and is an excellent fertilizer fur cabbage. Can fowls be assisted in the process of changing the feathers ? The moulting sea son is really a most trying one to them. During the tnoulting period the blood is drawn from for the materials which compose the feathers, and this drain is of ten so great as to weaken the fowl ; the remedy is to give as feed elements which will most quickly replace the exhausted blood. Fish, refuse ground bone and pow dered oyster shells are recommended for feed; and fur drink, water sapplied with rusty iron; also a little milk each day is good fur them. In place of rusty iron tincture of iron can be put in their drink ing water ; a tablespoonful of tincture to a quart of water is the rule. When should spinach be sown to secure it for early spring use ? The seeds should be sown early enough to get the plants well cultivated before the cold weather comes ; then they can be pro tected by covering lid fitly with some coarse • litter. In neighborhoods where it can be obtained swamp hay is- preferred to straw for this purpose, as it is a greater protec tion from field mice. The round smooth heaved spinach is more hardy than the long leaved kind, and is oft•nest used for fall sowing. CHEWING THE CUD.—Moore's Rural New-Yorlecr thinks that all ruminant an imals would be in a bad predicament if they were liable to lose their cud every time somebody gave them a kick, chased them down hill, or when they happened to cough suddenly from getting a little hay seed or dust down their throats! The ox, cow, sheep, goat and deer, belong to the order of "Ruminants," "bolt" their food somewhat hastly and almost, deposit ing it in the first stomach, and then at their leisure bringing up a little at a time to remasticate when they again swallow it, this time sending it to the second stomach or receptical. This remasticating is term ed "chewing the cud," and it is nothing more or less, and cows do not lose their cud while there is anything remaining in their stomachs to be remasticated. THERE was picked the past season from the Reynolds cranberry meadow in Burn ham, Maine, about five hundred bushels of crahberries, the largest yield for fifty years. Dr. Swayne's Medicines TO ALL DR. SWAYNE, The Di•coverer and Compounder of the far-famed DR. SWAYNE'S Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry and other valuable preparations, entered upon his profes sional career with the important advantage of* regular Medical Education in one of the oldest and bent schools in Philadelphia, and, perhaps in the world. Ile subse quently !rved a faithful term of practice in the Philadel phia Dispensary, and for many years attended also in the Hospital. In these iwttittitions he enjoyed the most am ple opportunities of obtaining an insight into diseases rn all their various forms, as well Folio. ascertaining the beet methods of their treatment. In offering, therefore, to the people of the United &att. the traits of his extensive pro fessional experience in the medical compounds as the best results of his skill awl observation, he feels that he is but proffering a boon to every family throughout the land, resting, as he does, confidently, in the merits and effica dons virtue of the remedies be herewith commends. The vast amount of testimony from all parts of the world has proven "DOCTOR SWAYER'S COMPOUND SYRUP OF WILD CHERRY" the most efficacious remedy known, and it is admitted by our most eminent physicians, and all who have witnessed its wonderful healing properties. Tke WILD CHERRY in all ages of the world, and in all coun tries where it is known, has been justly celebrated for its wonderful medicinal qualities; but its great power to cure some of the worst and most distressing diseases among us was never fully ascertained until the experiments of that skillful physician, Dr. Swayne, had demonstrated its high adaption, in combination with Pine Tree Tar, and in other equally valuable vegetable ingredients, which, chemically combined, renders its action tenfold inure certain and ben eficial in curing all diseases of the throat, breast and lungs. DR. SWAYNE'S WILD CHERRY COMPOUND strikes at the root of all diseases by purifying the blood, restoring the liver and kidneys to healthy action, invigor ating tho nervous and shattered constitution. ANOTHER HOPELESS CASE CONS UiiiPTION! CURED BY Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry ADAMSTOWN, Lancaster CO., Pa. Da. SwAvvn a Sex. Gentlemen:—About two years ago my wife was suffering from consumption, her cough at times was very distressing, and during her sickness had the best medical attendance in this and adjoining coun ties. Her case was pronounced hopeless by all of them. I was induced through the recommendation of your agent, Dr. Isaac 11. Miller, of West Brecknock, Berks county, Pa., and who can verify these facts, to try Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry. After using it for some time, she was entirely cured, and is now as well as ever, and fully able to perform her usual labor. lam so fully satisfied that it is to your preparation that I am indebted for her restoration to health, that I grant you full liberty to give her case publicity, in the hope that others now suffering may derive benefit from her experience. OPENIIMER & SONS, in the interest of the people of Hunting don county, see ourselves compelled to pro claim the fcllowing caution to all the trust ing people of this county, and to open the eyes of the truth loving : It having come to our knowledge that a certain class of shop-keepers in this town considered them selves smart enough, as they are certtCuly unscrupulous enough in their means to at tain a certain end, to pull the wool over the eyes of their former patrons, under a FALSE PRETENSE of shielding them against us by warning them not to buy an inferior article than they sell, they try to get a high price for their goods. Why do they not act as men of uprightness and fairness would do, ac knowledge equality of goods, and by try ing to undersell us, compel people to buy of them ? But they seem to have forgot ten, if they ever knew it, that the straight path is the best, and instead they choose to follow the path of crookedness, with its natural consequences of falsehood, and 'blindness to all that common sense dic tates. We are astonished to hear a man talk of shoddy trash who advertises one of the necessities of life, namely calico, one of the commonest trashes (to nse his refin ed expression) the universe can boast of. It has been remarked to us that a man who offers the best Madder prints, an arti cle which would be easily mistaken for a poor imitation of cob-web, must be either a knave, or a fool, or both. He either imagines he can fool his enlightened fel low-citizens with SOFT WORDS and bland smiles, or thinks they are not able to tell the difference, which would bring him under the humbugs. Having probably been living in the city for a short time and listening to the barrangue of street peddlers, now tries to imitate their style and tricks on an enlightened public, by advertising'an article, which he either never kept, or never intends to sell at the advertised price. As they hAve posted in the city "BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS !" we are to post up in front of such people's houses, BEWARE OF HUMBUGS ! and would do a lasting favor to all our fel low citizens. As a wolf in disguise is dif ficult to detect, except by a practiced eye, but when in his true hide everybody will be forewarned and therefore forearmed. LISTEN !
