If were so, Indiau cotton would long have driven American cotton flow Europe. But the firtster is inferior in quality to the latter, and hence American cotton rules the market. So it is with Indian wheat. Tt iss inferior in quality to American, and is only used in England to mix with better grades. Samples of this Indian wheat have been seen at the New York Produce Exchange and tested, with this result, agreeing in that respect with the English reports. As to cheapness, we have our doubts. The ryots of India are subject to the most merciless taxation. Their system of tax ation is 'primitive. They have no such implements or process as ours. And the means of transit to tide. water arc sadly deficient, while ours are superabundant. li . Indian wheat was as invaluable as represented, does any one suppose that the English merchants would load four hundred ships every year with wheat at San Francisco and take it eigh. teen thousand miles to linglrnd by sea Of course trot -We need only increase our exports of wheat and corn as fast as possible, in order to hold the ascendancy we have gained in the breadstuff markets ' of Europe. We have beaten Russia effect nally, and her agricultural labor was cheap er than ours. But her means of transport and handling were far behind ours. A CHEAP ICE o farmer should be without an ice house, because it is absolutely necessary in every family to preserve meat and other things in the St!Miler season. I once knew a farmer who dieW a few tons of ice in large square cakes, and packed them up upon a few rails near his house, to keep the ice from the ground with a bed of straw between and upon the rails. After the ice had reached a height of about eight feet, with a diameter of ten feet, he covered it two feet thick with straw, top and sides and then set some boards up so as to shade the ice and carry off the rains; and the ice kept till Septembei. This shows that ice will keep well above the ground. Build a cheap house for it about 14 feet square, with the door on the north side; lay down old rails, or anything to keep the ice off the ground, packed in sawed cakes, leav ing 18 inches of space between the ice and the sides of the house to be filled with straw firmly packed down. The door should be -in two parts, each about five feet long, the upper one to be used till the ice gets below the top of the lower one, with movable steps to go up to it. Be tween now and January is the time to build your ice house. I know of no ad vantage in having ice houses under ground. 1z172. Maxims for Farmers It is worth while for all farmers, every where to remember that thorough culture is better than three mortgages on their farms. That good fences always pay better than lawsuits with neighbors. That- were stock perish from famine than founder. That a horse that lays his cars back and looks lightning when any one approaches him is vicious. Don't buy him. That scrimping the feed of fattening hogs is a waste of grain. That over fed fowls won't lay eggs. That educating children properly is money lent out at one hundred per cent. That one evening spent at home in study is more profitable than ten lounging around country taverns. That cows Bhould always be milked reg ularly and clean. That it is the duty of every man to take a good reliable, entertaining paper, and pay for it promptly of course. A Frinet's Vie Wheat from India. Dr. Swayne's Medicines 1 1 0 _A- LI A !
