The Huntingdon Journal. Anti glfilifit Houszhold Labor. A housekeeper, after quoting the old saying that "a penny saved is twopence earned," very pertinently asks, if that is se. why is not the rule good in labor, one }Lair saved is worth two of hard work ? She thinks it is, for we save with it all the wear and tear of our minds and bodies, and our energies ara fresh for other work, .zany housekeepers toil ceaselessly from morn till night, when a little saving of labor would give them some hours of' rest. She goes on to say : "Some say that every room that is out:. pied must be swept every day ; but I think this is in many cases worse than useless. In bedrooms, if the occupants are careful and the one that makes the beds does not drop the feathers and straw, the operation of sweeping would be certainly fruitless if performed every day. In the sittingroom, if there are cleildren, it is usually necessary to perform that task every day, and some tfmes a number of times; hut where there are no children, with a little caution in re gard to keeping bits of paper, driblets of cloth, etc., from falling to the floor, we :nay save the inevitable dust that fol lows sweeping a floor at least every day. There are a great many items that really stein ridiculous in detail that all help to preserve order and neatness. "We all agree that neatness in table linen is very desirable, as well as all other table appointments. When the crumbs are scraped from the plate on the cloth, then the knives, forks and spoons are all gathered in a promiscuous heap and also laid on the cloth regardless of their con dition, the cloth is finally removed, is filded up hap hazard and laid down any- where ; thus for want of system, giving ex tra labor at the expense of cleanliness. "The silver ware should all be carefully removed in a dish or a waiter ; then the cutlery in another dish ; then scrape the plates into the slop pail; gather the dishes together carefully that none of their con tents are spoiled; fold the napkins ie the original creases formed by ironing; shake the table cloth and fold that, that is, pre serving the folds, which make it keep its l i fresh appearance much longer, and is as easy to perform as the careless way some have of folding it. Then lay it away out of-reach of flies, dust, etc. "In cne's wearing apparel, too, much la. bur in washing and ironing can he saved be wearing a large apron, which is more easily washed than a dress. It can ago be easily removed, so that a lady can keep neatly and nicely dressed while at work. I rn.lke my large aprons to reach nearly to the bottom of my dress, good and wide enough to button around at the lower part. Th:s keeps my skirts from swinging into and against things, and is very convenient Of course they have bibs. "One very bad habit indulged in by many people is grasping the door instead of the door knob to close it when passing through. This spoils the paint, necessita ting. frequent washing, which of course wears oil the paint, and iv - rat - 16as worse thAu a bare spot around the door-handle ? I gu.2ss nothing but a dirty one." Agriculture as a Pursuit. There is in our family of readers a loge number of physicians, druggists, cler gymen, merchants, chemists, etc., and we never have hc...rd a word of complaint from any one of them that we bestowed too much attention upon agriculture or that they Were not interested in the subject. _griculture is so fascinating, so noble, so grand in al; its relations and bearings that :111 chisses of readers if they do not own a ion: of land, are fond of agricultural liter ature. There are but very few in any of the professionS, or in any of tire industrial pumas, who do not cherish a secret hope or expectation that some day they will own a farm, and till it, and die upon it. As people grow older, they love to think of mother earth ; they love to look upon broad acres, covered with the bounteous gifts of a kind Providence; they love to hear the birds sing ; they love to look up into the heavens, broad and expansive; they love to bathe in sunlight, and feel the mild breezes of summer laden with sweet odors from woods and flowers. Young men often say they hate farming and all that is connected with the pursuit. They would, like John Randolph, go out of their way a mile to kick a sheep ; and as to cows, oxen, and all animals but a horse, they never wish to look upon them. If they live to middle life, they "meet with a change," and if their success has been indifferent, in whatever pursuit they may have fallen into, then the wish is heard expressed that they had remained upon the farm. The tilling of the soil is a glo rious calling, and depend upon it, young men, the time is coming when it will be more remunerative than most trades and professions. Washing Black and White Prints. It often happens that black calico, and other printed goods which have a white pattern on a black ground, will not bear washing unless some precautions are taken to prevent 'running;" or in other words, the white spots acquire a reddish color, and the black ground becomes dull and foxy. A case of this kind having occur cci in Stuttgart, the dress was sent to the Royal Laboratory there, and the following method resorted to, which proved success ful : A sufficient quantity of water was put in a wash boiler and heated, to boiling point. There wera then dissolved in it fifty grams red chromate of potash, eighty grams common salt, and sixty grams crys t ils of sal soda. The dress was put into this got bath for five minutes and frequent -3- turned and stirred, and then washed in clean water until the white spots appear ed perfectly bright and clear. It' you get a moment to spare, spruce up ; put your gate on its hinges ; put a litirc'paint -on the picket fence you built hst year; trine up the door yard, make it cosy and inviting. Do not say that you can find t & time to attend to these things; you have time. The fact is, you have no right to be so slovenly. Miscn]laneo~t KiDNlEi]i COMPLAINT. VINEGAR BITTERS, PURELY VEGETABE. FREE FROM ALCOHOL, Dr. J. Walker's California Vinegar Bit ters are a purely Vegetable preparation, made chiefly from the native herbs found on the lower ranges of the Sierra Nevada mountains of Califor nia, the medicinal properties of which aro extrac ted therefrom without the use of Alcohol. The question is almost daily asked, "What is the cause of the unparalleled success of Vinegar Bit ters?" Our answer is, that they remove the cause of disease, and the patient recovers his health. They are the great blood purifier and a lite-giving principle, a perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the system. Never before in the history of the world has a medicine been compounded possessing the remarkable qualities of Vinegar Bitters in healing the sick of every disease man is heir to. They are a gentle Purgative as well as Tonic, re lieving Congestion or Inflamation of the Liver and Visceral Organs, in Bilious Diseases. Dr. Walker's Caltforiaia Vinegar Bit ters act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the inflamma tion (the tubuecular deposits) the affected parts receive health, and a permanent cure is affected. If men will enjoy good health, let them use Vin egar Bitters as a medicine, and avoid the use of alcoholic stimulants in every form.
